PRECAUTIONS PFP:00001
Precautions for vehicles equipped with SRS airbags and pre-tensioner seat-
belts EGS00099
WARNING:
● Before removing and installing the components and the harnesses of air bags and pre-tensioner
seat belts, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least 3 min-
utes. (To discharge the electricity saved in the additional power circuit in the air bag sensor unit.)
● Do not use pneumatic or electric tools to remove and install the components.
● When repairing, do not solder the harness of the SRS air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt system.
Make sure that there are no pinched harnesses and no contact with other components.
● When checking the SRS air bag and the pre-tensioner seat belt circuit or each system as a compo-
nent, do not use an electric tester such as a circuit tester (to prevent accidental triggering caused
by the weak electric current of a tester).
● Do not insert a flat-bladed screwdriver or similar tool into the connectors on air bag module or
pre-tensioner seat belt (to prevent accidental triggering caused by static).
● To distinguish from other harnesses, the harness of the SRS air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt
system are identified with a yellow harness connectors.
● For safe service operation, refer to “SB Seat Belt” and “SRS Air Bag”.

POWER STEERING FLUID
SGIA0074J
CAUTION:
● Do not overfill.
● Recommended fluid is DEXRON TM III or equivalent. Refer to MA-10, "Fluids and Lubricants" .
Checking Fluid Leak EGS0009D
When the steering wheel is turned slowly or with the vehicle stopped, sound of fluid movement may be heard
from the gear valve and pump. This sound has nothing to do with steering performance or durability.
PS-6
STEERING WHEEL
PLAY INSPECTION
1. Set the tires to the straight-ahead position. Start the engine and lightly turn the steering wheel clockwise
B
and counterclockwise until the tires start moving. Measure the distance until the tires start moving on the
circumference of the steering wheel.
Steering wheel play inspection standard : 0 - 35 mm (0 - 1.38 in) C
2. If the play is outside the specified range, check the steering gear assembly, front suspension, axles, and
steering column for proper installation.
● Check the steering wheel for vertical, horizontal, or axial play. D
Tightening torque
: 140 - 160 N·m (14.2 - 16.4 kg·m,103 - 118 ft·lb) F
NEUTRAL POSITION INSPECTION
● After the wheel alignment inspection, carry out the neutral position inspection. Refer to FSU-6, "Wheel
alignment" . PS
● Before removing the steering wheel, check the steering gear neutral position.
1. Set the vehicle to the straight-ahead position, and check that the steering wheel is in the neutral position.
H
2. If it is not in the neutral position, remove the steering wheel, and install it again properly.
3. If it is not adjusted within two teeth from the center of gear, loosen the lock nut on tie rod. Then turn it to
the opposite direction to adjust until the amount of left and right becomes equal.
I
STEERING TORQUE CHECK
1. Stop the vehicle on a dry flat paved road, and apply the parking brake.
2. Start the engine and wait until the power steering fluid warms J
up. Using a preload gauge (special service tool), check the rota-
tional torque of the steering wheel.
Steering torque K
: 745 N·m (76 kg·m,550 ft·lb) or less
3. If the torque is outside the specified range, check the rack slid- L
ing force and oil pump relief oil pressure.
Rack sliding force : 284 N (29.0 kg,64.2 lb)
STA0005D M
Oil pump relief pressure : 8,434 - 9,219 kPa (86 - 94 kg/cm2 ,1,223 - 1,337 psi)

PS-7
STEERING WHEEL
● Start the engine for a while. With the engine at idle, turn the
steering wheel clockwise or counterclockwise until it reaches the
stop. Measure the steering angle.
Turning angle of full turn:
Inner wheel (Angle:A) Minimum :33°
Nominal :36°
Maximum :37°
Outer wheel (Angle:B) Nominal :33°
● If the angle is outside the specification, measure the rack stroke. SGIA0055E
REMOVAL
1. Remove the air bag module. Refer to “SRS SRS Air Bag” SRS-20, "DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE" .
2. Remove the horn connector.
3. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut and paint mating marks on the steering wheel body and the top
of the column shaft.
4. Using a steering wheel puller (special service tool), remove the
steering wheel.
SGIA0080E
INSTALLATION
Paying attention to the following steps, install in reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
● When reconnecting the spiral cable, fix the cable with a tape so that the fixing case and the rotating part
keep aligned. This will omit the neutral position alignment procedure during spiral cable installation.
● Neutral position (refer to figure). Gently turn spiral cable clock-
wise until it comes to the stop. Then turn it counter clockwise
(approximately 3.0 turns) until centering mark is aligned with
adjustment mark. (Service part is fixed in neutral position with
stopper. It can be installed onto steering wheel without align-
ment once stopper is removed.)
CAUTION:
● Install the steering wheel with the front wheels in the
straight-ahead position, the R mark on the cancel claw fac-
ing down, three bosses aligned with the three holes behind
the steering wheel assembly. Check that the spiral cable is SGIA0096E
placed in the neutral position. Also check that the locating
pin on the left of the spiral cable is aligned with the locating pin hole behind the steering wheel
assembly.
PS-8
STEERING WHEEL
● Do not rotate the spiral cable freely. Do not rotate excessively after it becomes tight. (It may cause
a cable breakage.) A
● After installation, check the system for proper operation by observing the air bag warning lamp.
● If the air bag warning lamp indicates any unusual condition, use the self-diagnosis reset function
or erase memory with CONSULT-II. B
● If the air bag warning lamp still shows an unusual condition even after the operation above, diag-
nose the system and repair the applicable parts.
