LC3 - Lesson 1 - What university


did you go to?
In this lesson, you will learn
☐ learn words and phrases to talk about
your university experience

Time: 45 minutes

Materials:

- Lecture slide: KE Daily English - Beginner 1 - LC3 (1) - What university did you go
to?
- There is NO video for this lesson
- Flashcards
- Whiteboard and pen.

General notes:

- Speed: For each level, speed is really important. Speed will be decided based on the
student's English level. The higher level, the faster speed. Speed will also depend on
the students’ characteristics.
- Pronunciation: For ESL student, correcting pronunciation is really important and
teachers should correct during the class using the back-chaining technique.
- The teacher should appraise the student or correct positively frequently.
- As students are adults, T should ask a lot of questions as well as giving examples to
enhance interaction and to check S’s comprehension. T may ask S to share their own
experience related to the lesson topic.
- If the student cannot answer, the teacher can ask guiding questions to help the S to
get to the answer.
- For students at low levels, T should explain the vocabulary/ grammar points/ answers
with simple sentences and examples.
For students at higher levels, T should ask S to explain their answers.

!!! Please make sure that the student tool mode is ON during class. For writing
activities, please ask the student to TYPE on the slide or in the chat box.

Evaluate the student performance after class (for teachers): Please spare five minutes to
fill in the performance evaluation for the student via Kyna Teacher’s App or
https://teacher.kynaenglish.com/ . This is compulsory in order to finish the class. Please be
noticed that the form should be filled in for each class within 24 hours.

- What does your place look like?


- It's a small apartment with a nice living room.
- It's a small bedroom with a comfortable bed
and some cupboards.

T tells S they are going to practice describing their house. T encourages S to use the
vocabulary and expressions they have learned in the previous lesson.
T asks S these questions.

What kind of house do you live in?


What does your place look like?
Do you have a dining room?
Do you have a garden?
Do you have any windows in your apartment/ house?

T listens to S and provide feedback in terms of content and pronunciation.


Word Association

University

T says: We're going to play a word association game! I'll give you a word, and you'll try to
come up with as many related words as possible. The key word for this round is "university". I'll
give you a minute to come up with as many related words as you can. Ready? Set. Go!

T encourages the student to write down any word that comes to mind, even if it seems
unrelated or silly.

After the time is up, T asks S read out their list of words and discuss each one briefly.
Example: book, learn, professor, study, exam, project, class, degree...
Vocabulary

Match the words (1-3) with


the correct definitions (a-c).

1. major a. A special paper you get when you finish learning at a college or university.
2. degree b. A group of classes that are all about the same subject.
3. course c. The most important subject that a college or university student is studying

T asks S to match the words with the correct definitions.

T explains each word to S and drills pronunciation.


A university "major" is the main subject a student choose to study. You take many classes
under this major.
A "degree" is what you get after you finish a university or college course. It's a piece of paper
that shows you successfully completed the course.
A "course" is a group of classes that teach you about one subject.

university experience.
T gives S 1 minute to prepare.
T listens to S's response and provides feedback on content and pronunciation.

T can shows S the template in the next slide if S struggles to come up with a response.

Hello, my name is Sarah. I went to Western State University and my major was Marketing.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time at university. I liked the Business Management course the
most because the professor made the class really interesting. However, I didn't like Statistics
very much because I found it difficult to understand.
Overall, my university experience was great, and I'm really glad that I was able to study
Marketing. It has helped me a lot in my current job.

T asks S to take a moment to look at the slide.


T says: First, let's look at the regular verbs. These verbs end in -ed. For example, the verb
"walk" is the base form, and in the past tense, we add -ed to make it "walked."
T asks S to give an example of another regular verb and its past tense form(different from
those on the slide). (dance/danced, watch/watched, clean/cleaned...)
T says: Now let's move on to the irregular verbs. These verbs don't follow the -ed rule, so they
have a unique past tense form. For example, the base form of the verb "be" is "be," but in the
past tense, we use "was" or "were."
T asks S to give an example of another irregular verb and its past tense form (different from
those on the slide). (see/saw, have/had, do/did)
