2 Barkey autocontrol 3XPT

Figure 1: Barkey autocontrol 3XPT

The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit is capable of controlling up two Barkey XPT
heaters to the pre-set value at the same time. Depending on the heater that is connected,
the set value for each heater can be set within the range +33 °C to +43 °C for each heater.
The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT detects various different heaters as they are connected and
automatically performs the settings for the relevant control requirements. The display
shows the current temperature of the heater.
Two connection sockets are provided on the front of the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT
control unit for connection of the heater profiles.
Access using the serial interface on the underside of the device is reserved for
communications devices approved by the manufacturer.
An ambient temperature sensor or a sensor for measuring temperatures can be connected
to the connection for an external sensor.

WARNING
External temperature sensors sold by Barkey are not medical electrical
thermometers and therefore must not be used for medical measurements (such as
the patient's temperature).
The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT is controlled by means of a operating panel which is
equipped with buttons, a large display and indicator lamps. In addition the device is
equipped with an acoustic buzzer which serves to draw attention to any faults that occur.
The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT is equipped with a mounting lug on the back. This allows
it to be mounted on either an infusion stand or a standard rail. The back wall of the device
is shaped at the top into a grip recess, so that the user can safely carry and manipulate the

2.1 Overtemperature protection

The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit is equipped with a separate overtemperature
protection for each channel. This operates by reference to the set value. This
overtemperature protection value is defined as 1°C above the respective set value for the
heater that is connected. After the device has been switched on or after connection of a
heater this overtemperature protection is at first set to the maximum value so as to avoid
false alarms if the heaters had previously been heated. As soon as the actual temperature
falls below the set value, overtemperature protection is automatically initiated at a value
1°C above the set value.
Each heater incorporates a second overtemperature protection which is factory-set to a
value specific to the type of heater. This second overtemperature protection monitors the
temperature in the heater via a separate measurement sensor. The overtemperature
protection cutout function is implemented within the control unit as an independent
circuit.
At soon as the temperature of one of the heaters reaches one of the two overtemperature
protection values, both channels are switched off automatically and the connected heaters
start to cool down. The fault indication lights up and an acoustic signal sounds. An error
message is shown in the display. The error messages are identified by numeric codes,
which are listed in Chapter 7.

2.2 Contra-indications
There are no known contra-indications in relation to heating and keeping warm
transfusions, infusions and fluids (purging solutions), for the avoidance of hypothermia.

2.3 Safety features

An on-site investigation must show
that the field strength a of stationary
transmitters is less than the
compliance level b at all frequencies.
Interference is possible near devices
that display the following symbol.

NOTE 1 The higher frequency level applies at 80 MHz and 800 MHz.
NOTE 2 These guidelines may not apply in all cases. The propagation of electromagnetic
variables is affected by absorption and reflection of buildings, objects and people.
a The field strength of stationary transmitters, such as base stations of radio telephones and
mobile land radios, amateur radios, AM and FM radio and television transmissions cannot be
precisely theoretically predetermined. You should consider carrying out a site study to determine
the electromagnetic environment with regard to stationary transmitters. If the measured field
strength at the location where the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT is being used exceeds the above
compliance levels, the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT should be monitored to ensure that the device is
functioning as intended. If unusual performance characteristics are observed, additional
measures such as changing the alignment or location of the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT may be
necessary.
b The field strength should be less than 3 V/m in the frequency range 150 kHz to 80 MHz.

1 1.17 1.17 2.33
10 3.69 3.69 7.38
100 11.67 11.67 23.33
For transmitters whose maximum nominal output is not given in the above table, the
recommended safety distance d in metres (m) can be calculated using the equation belonging to
the appropriate column, where P is the maximum nominal output of the transmitter in Watts (W)
as stated by the transmitter manufacturer.

NOTE 1 The higher frequency level applies at 80 MHz and 800 MHz.

The Barkey autoline XPT 4R is an active therapeutic medical device in the form of an
active heater jacket which heats an infusion tube or, in conjunction with haemodialysis
devices, heats the blood return flow and prevents it cooling.
The infusion tubes to be warmed are inserted into and enveloped within the Barkey
autoline XPT 4R heater profile. This means there is the maximum amount of heat transfer
from the heater profile to the fluid to be warmed.
Des Barkey autoline XPT 4R is connected to one of the two channels of a Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT unit, which regulates the temperature of the heater. The Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT detects a Barkey autoline XPT 4R heater as it is connected and
automatically performs the settings for the relevant control requirements.
The autoline XPT 4R stand support is used for securing the heater profile to the infusion
stand.
The Barkey autoline XPT 4R heater profile is available in several versions with different
internal diameters and different maximum temperatures. The maximum temperature
setting has to be indicated as a variant when ordering.

3.1 Device functions

The Barkey autoline XPT 4R is an electronically regulated heater for heating and keeping
warm infusion fluids on the way to the patient. The thermal output of the heater is applied
to the infusion tube through which the fluid is flowing.
For this purpose the device is constructed as a heater profile of resilient material with a
slit into which the infusion tube can easily be inserted. A support with a stand clamp
permits positioning of the heater profile on an infusion stand.
The heater profile is made of biologically compatible silicone which has been proven to
cause no skin irritation or other toxic reactions. This means the Barkey autoline XPT 4R
is particularly suited to intraoperative use.
The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit in conjunction with the Barkey autoline XPT
4R offers a very high degree of patient safety by means of a multi-layer safety concept
and independent overtemperature protection.
The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT controls the thermal output of the Barkey autoline XPT 4R
to which it is connected in conformity with the specified value saved in the heater. The
user can change the set value at the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT to the respective maximum
temperature adjustable. The maximum temperature of the autoline XPT 4R is factory set
as desired by the customer for 37, 40, 41 or 43 ° C.

3.6.2 Installing the heater

WARNING
Never attach the heater in an improvised fashion, instead always attach it as
described in this user manual.
Do not clamp any cables or tubes in the stand clamp slot of the clamp that is used
to mount the heater.

WARNING
Tighten the securing screw so that the support is securely fastened to the infusion
stand. It must not wobble or be able to slide. If the support is not securely fixed, it
can slip down taking the heater profile and infusion tube with it, thereby restricting
or preventing infusion flow.
► Attach the support at the correct position on the infusion stand using the securing
screw.
► Insert the infusion tube, starting at the end of the heater profile. Insert the heater
profile into the support and route the control cable to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT.
Connect the connection plug to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT.
► Insert the free end of the heater profile into the recess attached to the stand clamp
of the support.
► Secure the stand clamp of the heater support close to the infusion tube on the
infusion stand, so that the mounting for the head faces the infusion tube. Secure the
support by tightening the securing screw clockwise. For this purpose place the
stand clamp on the infusion stand. At this point the infusion stand must rest on the
bottom of the attachment slot. If the securing screw obstructs this it must be
unscrewed anticlockwise to clear the slot.
► Insert the head of the heater profile from above into the mounting for the head, so
that the heater profile runs down from it.

WARNING
The heater profile must not be covered, insulated, heated or cooled.
If the infusion is brought to a stop and at the same time the heater profile starts to
cool down, the risk of overheating the infusion tube cannot be excluded.

in devices of the Barkey XPT heating system. If interference of
this type occurs, increase the distance between the XPT device
suffering interference and the device causing the interference,
or do not operate both devices at the same time. XPT devices
work perfectly within the interference limit values set in the
EN 60601-1-2 standard. XPT devices can be affected by
interference outside the limit values set by EN 60601-1-2.
The device may not be used immediately next to other devices
or stacked on top of other devices. If it is necessary to operate
the device next to or stacked on top of other devices, the device
must be monitored to check that it is working correctly in this
situation.
Portable and mobile HF communication equipment such as
mobile phones can affect XPT devices.
Do not use XPT devices in the immediate vicinity of
flammable materials (e.g. gases, liquids),
flammable mixtures of anaesthetic substances with air,
flammable mixtures of anaesthetic substances with oxygen or
laughing gas
whose flashpoint is below 50 ℃. In particular, it is imperative
that XPT devices are not used in the same areas where alcohol
disinfectants and anaesthetising substances are being used at
the time.
XPT devices may not be operated in the immediate vicinity of
devices with a high thermal discharge output.

Support

Heater jacket

Control cable

Connection plug

Figure 34: Heater jacket with support and connection lead

Heater jacket
The heater jacket is made of aluminium with surface treatment and has a slit at the side to
accept liquid vessels to which an infusion tube is already attached. The infusion vessels
can thus easily be suspended. An infusion bottle thus does not require a separate
suspension from the infusion hook. The heater jacket contains the heater element and the
temperature sensors as well as the necessary cabling.

Support
The heater jacket support has an eye at the top so that it can be suspended from the
infusion hook on the infusion stand. If the hook is free to slide on the support this allows
the infusion bag and its tube loop as well as the heater to be secured against accidentally
falling down.

Control cable
This allows the control unit to supply the heater jacket with a safety low voltage for
operation of the heater element. It also reports back to the control unit the measured
values from the temperature sensors incorporated in the heater jacket. The control cable is
connected to the heater jacket via a strain relief.

4.6.4 Connecting the heater

WARNING
Before the heater can be connected, the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit must
have been correctly mounted on a standard rail or infusion stand. You will find
particulars for this in Chapters 0 and 2.8 of this user manual.
Before the Barkey autotherm XPT is used with a control unit, both devices must be
allowed to acclimatise at the place of use for at least an hour at ambient
temperature.

CAUTION
When connecting the heater make sure its plug is correctly aligned. It can be
inserted in only one position. Do not force the plug when inserting it.
Never unscrew the heater connection plug. This might damage the electronics
contained within it.

WARNING
After being connected to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT, a heater must remain
connected for at least 6 seconds. Otherwise, the parameters saved in the heater
cannot be correctly recognised. Therefore do not change over the heater within this
period.
After disconnecting a heater from the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT, you must wait at
least 6 seconds before connecting another heater. Otherwise the parameters saved
in the heater will not be recognised correctly. Therefore do not change over the
heater within this period.
The Barkey autotherm XPT heater can be connected to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT

Cleaning and care Barkey XPT heating system

5 Cleaning and care

The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT and XPT heaters are simple and easy to clean due to their
smooth surfaces and rounded corners.
The surfaces of the Barkey heating system XPT devices must be regularly cleaned and
disinfection-wiped.

WARNING
Before cleaning or wipe-disinfecting the device:
 Switch off the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT using the On/Off switch at the top of
the operating panel and withdraw the mains plug from the mains socket.
 Disconnect the heater from the control unit by releasing and withdrawing its
connection plug.
 Do not pour cleaning fluid or disinfectant directly on to the heater. Always
moisten a cloth and then use this cloth to clean the heater.
 Never apply cleaning agents to the ventilation openings on the control unit.
 Never use steam (i.e. in autoclaves), hot air or thermo-chemical cleaning
solutions to disinfect the control unit and heater.
You should use standard commercial preparations based on alcohol without oxygen-

content < 0.2%) as a disinfectant.
► If possible clean the heater with a solution of soap and water.
► Dry the surfaces and use a surface disinfectant. Note the time to take effect stated
by the disinfectant manufacturer!
► After allowing the disinfectant time to take effect, dry the device off with
disposable tissues.

WARNING
The user should not use any other cleaning or decontamination methods than those
recommended by the manufacturer.
If you intend to use alternative cleaning products or decontaminants, you must first
consult the manufacturer to ensure that the proposed methods will not damage the
device.
Otherwise, please refer to the hygiene measures and regulations which apply in
your hospital.

Barkey XPT heating system Maintenance

6 Maintenance

Besides cleaning the heating system and performing the electrical safety checks, other
maintenance measures that must be carried out are a regular safety check and regular
battery replacement.
These servicing operations may be carried out only by qualified service personnel or
employees of Barkey GmbH & Co. KG. Training for medical technicians in checking and
repairing the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT and the heaters for connection to it is available at
the Barkey GmbH & Co. KG factory. Please call us on +49 (5202) 9801-30 for
information about current availability and costs.
At the end of this user manual you will find a blank form for a device master data sheet.
You can use this as the front page of your servicing records file.

6.1 Technical safety inspection (TSI)

As with all electronic devices, the Barkey XPT heating system's temperature regulation
capabilities are subject to normal ageing and to the tolerances of the electronic
components.
To ensure that the temperature regulation capabilities of the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT are
always within the stated tolerances, a technical safety inspection (TSI) must be carried
out each year by qualified service personnel or by employees of Barkey GmbH & Co. KG
(see Operators of Medical Products Directive § 6).
Since the control unit can be operated with any of the heaters, the technical safety
inspection for the control unit and for each heater must be performed separately.
The technical safety inspection should also include the prescribed electrical safety check.
As soon as a safety inspection for the control unit or a heater connected to it becomes
due, when you switch on the control unit you will be automatically reminded of the
requirement for safety inspection of the respective device by a message in the display.
When the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit is switched on it performs a self-check.
A safety inspection therefore extends to the measurement functions at the signal inputs
and the checking of the overtemperature protection function. Safety inspections also
include checking the ventilation grilles at the air intake and outlet and cleaning them as
necessary.
Inspection of the heaters also includes checking the temperature value actually achieved
by the heater. If the measured values lie outside the tolerances stated in the test certificate,
the device must be recalibrated. Correction of the temperature setting can be performed
only at Barkey GmbH & Co. KG.
All the work necessary for servicing and for the TSI is described in a separate service
manual which can be requested from Barkey GmbH & Co. KG.
