The Barkey autoline XPT 4R is an active therapeutic medical device in the form of an
active heater jacket which heats an infusion tube or, in conjunction with haemodialysis
devices, heats the blood return flow and prevents it cooling.
The infusion tubes to be warmed are inserted into and enveloped within the Barkey
autoline XPT 4R heater profile. This means there is the maximum amount of heat transfer
from the heater profile to the fluid to be warmed.
Des Barkey autoline XPT 4R is connected to one of the two channels of a Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT unit, which regulates the temperature of the heater. The Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT detects a Barkey autoline XPT 4R heater as it is connected and
automatically performs the settings for the relevant control requirements.
The autoline XPT 4R stand support is used for securing the heater profile to the infusion
stand.
The Barkey autoline XPT 4R heater profile is available in several versions with different
internal diameters and different maximum temperatures. The maximum temperature
setting has to be indicated as a variant when ordering.
WARNING
Barkey XPT heaters may be operated only in conjunction with the Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT control unit.
If infusion solutions or medicaments are being kept warm the user must ensure that
the temperature setting in the control unit is appropriate for them and will not
impair their effectiveness. If this is not so, the user must adjust the temperature
settings to values appropriate to the infusion solutions or medicaments.
If despite the use of biologically compatible materials the patient suffers skin
irritation, the heater must be removed from the patient immediately.

Heater profile
The heater profile is made of biologically compatible silicone and has a slit to
accommodate the infusion tube. The heater profile contains the heater element and the
temperature sensors as well as the necessary cabling.
Two heater profiles are available, both the same length but with different
internal diameters. The maximum temperature of the autoline 4R XPT is factory preset
according to the needs of the user to 37, 40, 41 or 43°C:
Control cable
This allows the control unit to supply the heater profile with a safety low voltage for
operation of the heater element. It also reports back to the control unit the measured
values from the temperature sensors incorporated in the heater profile. The control cable
is mechanically connected to the heater profile.
Connection plug
The multi-pin connection plug connects the heater to the control unit. The plug
automatically locks into place when it is inserted. To withdraw the plug, release the catch
by pulling on the knurled sleeve of the plug. The plug contains the electronics which store
the parameters of the heater.
WARNING
The device and its system components must be checked before every use to ensure
they are all intact. Damaged devices must not be used.
In order not to put the safety of the patient or operator at risk, do not use the device
if one of the following conditions applies:
- The power cords, mains plugs, control leads, plugs or sockets are damaged or
worn
- The casing or operating panel is damaged
- The device has been dropped or its internal electronic components have
become wet.
- The device does not heat correctly (as displayed by optical and acoustic
alarms).
- The yellow alarm lamp and/or acoustic alarm on the control unit is activated
- The heater is damaged.
3.6.1 Installation location
The infusion heating system consisting of the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT and Barkey
autoline XPT 4R is intended for use indoors as a fixed installation. Mobile use is not
intended.
The Barkey autoline XPT 4R must be mounted on an infusion stand.
WARNING
The infusion heating system can be used at ambient temperatures from +10°C to
+40°C and is suitable for continuous operation.
Be sure to comply with the safety instructions in the respective chapters of this user
manual, which give instructions about the environmental conditions under which
the heater may not be used or under which its operation may be impaired.
WARNING
Never attach the heater in an improvised fashion, instead always attach it as
described in this user manual.
Do not clamp any cables or tubes in the stand clamp slot of the clamp that is used
to mount the heater.
WARNING
Tighten the securing screw so that the support is securely fastened to the infusion
stand. It must not wobble or be able to slide. If the support is not securely fixed, it
can slip down taking the heater profile and infusion tube with it, thereby restricting
or preventing infusion flow.
► Attach the support at the correct position on the infusion stand using the securing
screw.
► Insert the infusion tube, starting at the end of the heater profile. Insert the heater
profile into the support and route the control cable to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT.
Connect the connection plug to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT.
► Insert the free end of the heater profile into the recess attached to the stand clamp
of the support.
► Secure the stand clamp of the heater support close to the infusion tube on the
infusion stand, so that the mounting for the head faces the infusion tube. Secure the
support by tightening the securing screw clockwise. For this purpose place the
stand clamp on the infusion stand. At this point the infusion stand must rest on the
bottom of the attachment slot. If the securing screw obstructs this it must be
unscrewed anticlockwise to clear the slot.
► Insert the head of the heater profile from above into the mounting for the head, so
that the heater profile runs down from it.
WARNING
The heater profile must not be covered, insulated, heated or cooled.
If the infusion is brought to a stop and at the same time the heater profile starts to
cool down, the risk of overheating the infusion tube cannot be excluded.
WARNING
Before using the heating system, perform a disinfectant wipe of the heater and all
the other components.
Each time before using the heater, check it including the control cable and the plug
for mechanical damage. If the heater is damaged, do not use it.
WARNING
Make sure that the infusion tube is not twisted, nor kinked where it enters or exits
the heater profile. Such twists or kinks can restrict or prevent the infusion flow.
The heater profile must not be kinked, damaged or shortened.
WARNING
Before the heater can be connected, the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit must
have been correctly mounted on a standard rail or infusion stand. You will find
particulars for this in Chapters 0 and 2.8 of this user manual.
Before the Barkey autoline XPT 4R is used with a control unit, both devices must
be allowed to acclimatise at the place of use for at least an hour at ambient
temperature.
CAUTION
When connecting the heater make sure its plug is correctly aligned. It can be
inserted in only one position. Do not force the plug when inserting it.
Never unscrew the heater connection plug. This might damage the electronics

connected for at least 6 seconds. Otherwise the parameters saved in the heater will
not be recognised correctly. Therefore do not change over the heater within this
period.
After disconnecting a heater from the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT, you must wait at
least 6 seconds before connecting another heater. Otherwise the parameters saved
in the heater will not be recognised correctly. Therefore do not change over any
heaters within this period.
The Barkey autoline XPT 4R heater can be connected to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT
control unit, irrespective of whether the control unit is switched on or not. The heater and
the control unit support "hot-plugging", so the parameters are read electronically and
correct regulation is established even if the control unit is switched on when the
connection to the heater is made.
The connection plug for the heater is inserted into the relevant socket for channel 1 or 2 at
the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit (it is the user's free choice which of the two
channels is selected for connecting the heater).
► Connect the heater to either one of the sockets provided for the purpose on the
Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit. The two sockets are located immediately
underneath the display on the device. To aid alignment, both plug and socket carry
a red dot; these dots must lie one above the other.

NOTE
The heater can be plugged in even when the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT is already
switched on. The heater is detected automatically and the controls set up correctly
for it.
► If the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit was not already in operation when the
heater was connected, now switch it on. You will find particulars for this in
Chapters 0 and 2.8 of this user manual.
CAUTION
When a heater is plugged in to a Barkey autocontrol 3XPT that is already switched
on, it must remain connected for at least 6 seconds in order that the parameters
stored in the heater can be correctly read and recognised. Therefore do not change
over the heater within this period.
The Barkey autotherm XPT is an active therapeutic medical device in the form of an
active heater jacket which heats pre-heated blood conserves, infusion bottles or bags and
prevents them cooling. The 3XPT infusion heating system can be with infusions in all
cases where it is necessary to prevent the patient suffering a fall in temperature.
The Barkey autotherm XPT is connected to one of the two channels of a Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT unit, which regulates the temperature of the heater. The Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT detects a Barkey autotherm XPT heater as it is connected and
automatically performs the settings for the relevant control requirements.
The Barkey autotherm XPT heater jacket is available in various versions suitable for
different infusion vessels:
Designation Description
Barkey autotherm 1 for round bottles 500 ml DIN (approx. 75 mm diameter)
Infusion bags 250 - 300 ml
Barkey autotherm 2 for round bottles 1000 ml DIN (approx. 90 mm diameter)
for round bottles 500 ml ISO (approx. 90 mm diameter)
Infusion bags 500 ml
Barkey autotherm 3 for round bottles 1000 ml ISO (approx. 100 mm diameter)
Barkey autotherm 4 for infusion bags (plastic) 250 ml to 400 ml

Barkey autotherm s Made to customer order
WARNING
Barkey XPT heaters may be operated only in conjunction with the Barkey
autocontrol 3XPT control unit.
If infusion solutions or medicaments are being heated or kept warm the user must
ensure that the temperature setting in the control unit is appropriate for them and
will not impair their effectiveness. If this is not so, the user must adjust the
temperature settings to values appropriate to the infusion solutions or medicaments.

Heater jacket
The heater jacket is made of aluminium with surface treatment and has a slit at the side to
accept liquid vessels to which an infusion tube is already attached. The infusion vessels
can thus easily be suspended. An infusion bottle thus does not require a separate
suspension from the infusion hook. The heater jacket contains the heater element and the
temperature sensors as well as the necessary cabling.
Support
The heater jacket support has an eye at the top so that it can be suspended from the
infusion hook on the infusion stand. If the hook is free to slide on the support this allows
the infusion bag and its tube loop as well as the heater to be secured against accidentally
falling down.
Control cable
This allows the control unit to supply the heater jacket with a safety low voltage for
operation of the heater element. It also reports back to the control unit the measured
values from the temperature sensors incorporated in the heater jacket. The control cable is
connected to the heater jacket via a strain relief.
Connection plug
The connection plug connects the heater to the control unit. The plug automatically locks
into place when it is inserted. To withdraw the plug, release the catch by pulling on the
knurled sleeve of the plug. The plug contains the electronics which store the parameters
of the heater.
CAUTION
The infusion heating system can be used at ambient temperatures from +10°C to
+40°C and is suitable for continuous operation.
Be sure to comply with the safety instructions in this user manual, which give
instructions about the environmental conditions under which the heater may not be
used or under which its operation may be impaired.
WARNING
Never attach the heater in an improvised fashion, instead always attach it as
described below.
► Suspend the heater by hanging the eye on its support from the infusion hook on the
infusion stand.
WARNING
Make sure the infusion tube is not twisted or pinched.
WARNING
The heater must not be cooled or heated.
Simultaneous cooling of the heater can cause contact temperatures to exceed 41 °C.
4.6.3 Application
WARNING
Before using the heating system, perform a disinfectant wipe of the heater and all
the other components.
Each time before using the heater, check it including the control cable and the plug
for mechanical damage. If the heater is damaged, do not use it.
The heater must never be installed anywhere but on an infusion stand.
► Always install the infusion bottle in the heater jacket with its opening facing
downwards. The end of the bag must be attached to the hook on the device to
prevent the infusion bag accidentally slipping down.
WARNING
Before the heater can be connected, the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT control unit must
have been correctly mounted on a standard rail or infusion stand. You will find
particulars for this in Chapters 0 and 2.8 of this user manual.
Before the Barkey autotherm XPT is used with a control unit, both devices must be
allowed to acclimatise at the place of use for at least an hour at ambient
temperature.
CAUTION
When connecting the heater make sure its plug is correctly aligned. It can be
inserted in only one position. Do not force the plug when inserting it.
Never unscrew the heater connection plug. This might damage the electronics
contained within it.
WARNING
After being connected to the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT, a heater must remain
connected for at least 6 seconds. Otherwise, the parameters saved in the heater
cannot be correctly recognised. Therefore do not change over the heater within this
period.

The Barkey autocontrol 3XPT and XPT heaters are simple and easy to clean due to their
smooth surfaces and rounded corners.
The surfaces of the Barkey heating system XPT devices must be regularly cleaned and
disinfection-wiped.
WARNING
Before cleaning or wipe-disinfecting the device:
Switch off the Barkey autocontrol 3XPT using the On/Off switch at the top of
the operating panel and withdraw the mains plug from the mains socket.
Disconnect the heater from the control unit by releasing and withdrawing its
connection plug.
Do not pour cleaning fluid or disinfectant directly on to the heater. Always
moisten a cloth and then use this cloth to clean the heater.
Never apply cleaning agents to the ventilation openings on the control unit.
Never use steam (i.e. in autoclaves), hot air or thermo-chemical cleaning
solutions to disinfect the control unit and heater.
You should use standard commercial preparations based on alcohol without oxygen-
releasing components (with sodium hydrochloride with 1.4% bleach solution or aldehyde
content < 0.2%) as a disinfectant.
► If possible clean the heater with a solution of soap and water.
► Dry the surfaces and use a surface disinfectant. Note the time to take effect stated
by the disinfectant manufacturer!
► After allowing the disinfectant time to take effect, dry the device off with
disposable tissues.
WARNING
The user should not use any other cleaning or decontamination methods than those
recommended by the manufacturer.
If you intend to use alternative cleaning products or decontaminants, you must first
consult the manufacturer to ensure that the proposed methods will not damage the
device.
