Subject : Rain water pipe diameter Calculation for Terrace area

Area in
Description
Sq.mtr Hectare
Total Terrace area 5745 0.57

As per above table in NBC 2016

All Vertical
Downtakes are
Considered intensiy of rainfall in mm/hr 100 designed for 100
mm of rainfall
intensity.
Therefore
(231.48X1.44)
Roof area in mm2
333.33

Total Terrace Area/Roof Area

Total nos. of Rain water pipe of 150 dia for per stack
(Designed dia)
17.2
Proposed 160mm dia @ terrace lvl. as per 17
the drawing.

Rainwater pipe sizing

V = 1/n x R2/3 x S1/2
V = Velocity in mtr/sec A = Wetted area in Sq.Mtr
P = Wetted perimeter in meter R = Hydraulic radius = A/P
n = Mannings co-efficient S = Hydraulic gradient
Value of n for CI = 0.013, Hume pipe = 0.012, PVC pipe = 0.011
80% flow condition is considered, hence A = 3.142 D 2/4 x 0.8, P = 3.142 D x 0.8

Shaft No. Discharge Ltr/sec Pipe dia A

Catchment area-01 33.25 0.25 0.0393

Catchment-01 & 02 63.75 0.3 0.0566
Catchment area -03 41.25 0.25 0.0393

Q achieved is same or higher than design Q, design is OK.

V shall be equal to or more than 0.6 mtr/sec and shall not exceed 2.4 mtr/sec

As per design, highlighted shafts above are 110 dia, but since all vertical stacks are 110 dia, therefore
horizontal pipes has been considered as 200 dia on higher side.
