LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 8

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrate an understanding of the concept of
species; the species as being further classified into a hierarchical
taxonomic system.
B. Performance Standards The learners should be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue)
on the activities that communities engage in protect and
conserve endangered and economically important species.
C. Learning Competencies/ The learners should be able to classify organisms using the
Objectives hierarchical taxonomic system. S8LT-IVh-20

1. Be kind, polite, and courteous to others.

2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
3. Be respectful of classmates, teachers, and property.
4. Listen to the teacher and classmates, and follow directions.
5. Work hard and always do your best.
6. Be safe.
7. Raise your hand when you would like to speak in class, when leaving your seat or if you need to
leave the classroom for a reason.
8. Be ready to take the consequences if you break the rules.

*MOTIVATION

ACTIVITY 1: FOUR PICS, 1 WORD!

Directions: Supply the missing letters to complete the word that refers to each set of four pictures.
ANSWERS:
1. AMPHIBIAN 3. REPTILES
2. MAMMAL 4. BIRDS

The teacher gives candy to the learner who first answered correctly.

ACTIVITY 2: WHERE AM I?

The teacher grouped the class according to:

Group 1: NAGA -LUPAD
Group 2: NAGA LAKAT GAMIT ANG APAT KA TIIL
Group 3: NAGA KAMANG

The teacher will then provide a box with a set of pictures containing the said animals. The task is, each
group shall pick as fast as they can, the animals intended for their assigned group and be able to paste it
correctly on the area where they belong.

The first to finish the task correctly shall be declared the winners.

NAGA - LUPAD NAGALAKAT GAMIT ANG NAGAKAMANG

APAT KA TIIL
BIRDS CAT SNAKE
CHICKEN DOG LIZARD
BUTTERFLY COW SNAIL

*The teacher will give praises and rewards to the performances.

*The teacher will remind the class to keep quiet and settle down.
Note: The class will be given a 5 minute preparation to do the task.

 Discussions were integrated by mother tongue or Hiligaynon language to facilitate understanding.

B. EXPLORE – 15 MINUTES

*The teacher will ask the class regarding the implication of the previous activity to today’s lesson.
*The teacher will then ask the class whether what they think is the lesson today.

POSSIBLE ANSWERS: Classifying, Grouping, Animals,

The teacher will then present the objectives of today’s discussion.
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, the learners will be able to:
a. Familiarize the Linnean Hierarchical System of Classification
b. Create mnemonic device on biological taxonomic system.
c. Appreciate the proponents of the early system of classification.

ACTIVITY3: MATHINIK!
The teacher will be using the same group. Each group has been given the same set of activities containing
some simple mathematical operations to be solved. The task is they need to answer each item correctly
and be able to decode the correct phrase which is to be reported to the teacher. The phrase is arranged
according to the sequence of the number. The first group to complete the task accurately shall be declared
the winner and be given an award.

1. 5x5
2. 15 / 3
3. 10 – 2

SOUP CAME PHILIP GOOD FOR DEAR OVER KING

PHRASE:
____________________________________________________________________________________
_

ANSWER: DEAR KING PHILIP CAME OVER FOR GOOD SOUP

The teacher will let the students read the phrase five times.

ACTIVITY 4: LUGAR LANG!

The teacher will be using the same group. Each group shall be given the same task which is placed inside
the brown envelope. The brown envelope is consist of strips of paper. The task is to arranged the strips of
paper so that they will form an inverted triangle. The first to finish the task shall be the winner.

The teacher reminds the class to ehave accordingly and observe minimum silence while doing the task.
ANSWER:

DEAR

KING

PHILIP

CAME

OVER

FOR

GOOD

SOUP

The teacher will relate the implication of the mnemonic to the hierarchy of classification.

C. EXPLAIN – 15 MINUTES

ACTIVITY 5: KOREK ME IF IM WRONG!

* Same group shall be used. Each group has a different task with one single output.

GROUP 1: They will be going to paste the strips of paper from the largest category to the specific
one of classifying organism.

GROUP 2: They will be going to paste the strips of paper about the mnemonic device and
arranged it in order.

Group 3: They will be going to evaluate if the tasks of group 1 and 2 are correct. As well as they
will going to give a very brief explanation to the output.

CRITERIA:

Content (Accuracy): 5 points

Presentation (Explanation, Delivery): 3 points
Conclusion: 2 points

TOTAL: 10 points

Phrases and rewards will be given.

D. ELABORATE – 12 MINUTES

The teacher deepens the lesson by asking thought-provoking questions and give additional information.

Understanding the concepts and principles of taxonomic system of classification enhances your ability to classify
living things. It also helps you to understand how species are named and classified. Organisms are classified
according to their physical characteristics from the highest in the taxonomic hierarchy which is the Domain. to the
lowest in the taxonomic hierarchy, the Species.

Scientists group organisms into meaningful classifications. Large groups include many organisms with few
similarities. Small groups include few organisms having more similarities. The classifications are categorized into the
following hierarchy: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Figure 1 below shows an
inverted pyramid indicating the hierarchy in descending order.

WHAT IS CLASSIFICATION? It is putting things into orderly groups based on similar characteristics.
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SYSTEM OF CLASSIFICATION?

TAXONOMY - Discipline of classifying organisms and assigning each organism a universally accepted name.

PROPONENTS OF THE EARLY SYSTEM OF CLASSIFICATION

 ARISTOTLE
- grouped everything into simple groups such as animals or plants. Organisms were first
classified more than 2000 years.
- plants were placed into three categories based on the differences in their stems.
- animal organisms were classified according to: air dwellers; water dwellers and land dwellers.
 CAROLOUS LINNAEUS
- The modern classification system was developed by the Swedish scientist Carolous Linnaeus
in the mid 1700’s.
- Some characteristics he used to classify organisms were outside appearance, internal
organs and how body system worked.
-
He named organisms with a two-part naming system (genus-species) called BINOMIAL
NOMENCLATURE.
- He developed a Hierarchy (a ranking system) for classifying organisms that is the basis for
Modern Taxonomy. (Linnean Hierarchical System of Classification)
- Thus, he is “THE FATHER OF TAXONOMY”
BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE -is the Latin term we use in our naming system to classify/identify organisms
- Two part naming system develop by Linnaeus

APPLICATION: HOTS

ACTIVITY 6: LET’S APPLY!

Based on the lesson for today, write at least 2 sentences reflecting the importance of classifying
organisms. Write your answers on the provided sheet for 2 minutes.

The importance of classifying organisms helps us to understand the relationship, similarities and
differences between the individual type of organism.
E. EVALUATE – 5 MINUTES

The teacher will give a short quiz about the lesson.

Fill out the inverted triangle with the correct levels of Linnean Hierarchical System of Classification and
write the corresponding mnemonic device for each level.

ASSIGNMENT – 3 MINUTES

On a short bond paper, research about the classification of the following organism using the hierarchical
taxonomic system.

1. Dog
2. Gumamela
3. Mushroom
