Portfolio - UNIT 4

I. Focus on the topic questions. (Answer as a paragraph)

Is an animal’s ability to imitate human behavior a sign of high intelligence? Explain.
Are domesticated animals (dogs, horses, monkeys, parrots) that can be trained more
intelligent than animals living in the wild?
Which animals seem to exhibit levels of intelligence more than others? What do they do
that makes them intelligent?

I think that an animal's ability to imitate human behavior is a sign

of high intelligence because it uses its abilities to follow a pattern
in order to adapt to the human’s environment. We can evidence
animal intelligence like the moment they are trained for being
seizure dogs and eventually they develop the ability to be an alert
dog. Also we could see this pattern in monkeys who elaborate
certain tools to solve daily problems in their environment when it
is time to collect some food. In both cases, whereas in an
environment controlled by humans or in their own environment,
animals might use their intelligence to solve major problems
when the circumstances force. The species that exhibit a high
level of intelligence, after humans, is dolphins according to the
intelligence’s measure related to how much the brain weighs in
relation to total body weight.

BEES SMARTER THAN BABIES?

1. What is the main idea or thesis ?

It’s challenging for humans to create tests that don’t remind animals of
their natural behavior.

2. Who wrote the article or passage?

Rita Simonsen

3. Where the studies were done?

In Queen Mary University in London.

4. Why does the author think the studies aren't accurate?

3

The studies concluded that learning speed couldn’t be used to measure

intelligence since humans aren’t apparently the smartest, and in
addition bees have been perfecting during aeons of evolution.

5. Why do the bees beat the babies?

Because bees use his learning speed more effectively than babies.

6. How do researchers measure bees' intelligence?

They measure the learning speed by studies of human psychology.

Writing 1 - with corrections.

In Extreme Perception and Animal Intelligence, authors Temple Grandin

and Catherine Johnson discuss if animals have extreme perception which means
intelligence to acquire specific skills without human training. For that purpose,
the authors show us two interesting cases where they confront the idea that
animals might have intelligence.

The first case is the example of some seizure response dogs that turned
into seizure alert dogs. To be more precise about 10 percent of seizure response
dogs eventually turned into alert dogs. Connie Standley, owner of a couple of
seizure response dogs, mentioned in an article in The New York Times that her
dogs 80 percent of the time warn her by doing things like pulling or barking her.

The second case where they might evidence animals' extreme perception
is about the German horse called Clever Hans that initially was considered a
clever horse because his owner, Wilhelm von Osten, thought the animal could
answer questions and solve mathematical problems like "What's seven and
five?", Mr. von Oster could and the horse answers by tapping out the correct
number with his hoff. However, Oskar Pfungust, a psychologist who deeply
studied the animal, discerned that it had developed the ability of reading
unconscious human signs.

Temple Grandin and Catherine Johson concluded that seizure dogs with
their extreme perception and Clever Hands with his advanced learnt reflexes are
good examples of high intelligence since they developed skills to identify a
4

pattern and freely elicit how to face them which represent highly cognitive skills.
The authors finally states "intelligence is people using their built-in perceptual
and cognitive skills to achieve useful and sometimes remarkable goals", so we
also can acknowledge that these animals had shown these specifics behaivor in
their own circumstances.

Free Writing: Theory of Evolution by Darwing (Summary)

On the Origin of Species by means of natural selection, Darwin

offers a pretty detailed explanation of how species evolve thanks to
two remarkable factors. He argued that all the existing creatures
descended from a small number of original species. He explains two
factors that are crucial for evolution. The first is that each animal has
peculiar differences from its parents, named “variations”, and, the
second factor is that this, apparently, random variations brings
advantages or superior abilities or features to the species. Finally,
Darwin concluded that a greater chance of survival brings more
opportunity to breed and pass on advantageous traits in order to
increase the offspring.

Temple and Gita

Gita: What is the definition of extreme perception related to

animals?
Extreme perception in animals refers to animals’s capabilities to
understand and solve complex problems. Forensic dogs, for example,
use their extreme perception to find lost people, identify drugs or bards
when something is suspicious.

Temple Grandin: Why is it so difficult to measure an animal's

intelligence?
Because of the language. We as humans are extremely connected with
the language, which is the most important vehicle to exchange
information among us. However, since animals aren’t the same
communication code like humans, it is hard to identify if their behaviors
come from instinct or intelligence.

Portfolio - UNIT 5
1. It has been projected that by the year 2050, the average lifespan
will reach 125, and by 2087 it will be 150! Do you think living longer
is a good thing? Why or why not? Think about how such issues as
relationships, marriage, family structure, and career might be
affected.

If the lifespan reaches 125 or even more, it might be a good thing

because you could have the opportunity to reinvent yourself in
different areas of our life. If our lifetime increases, we might study more
than one or two careers, also the conception of marriage would be
different, the couples will be more aware that the marital bounds are
fragile so people would see the divorce, sooner or later, as a certain
final destiny, in order to live new and different experiences with other
partners. On the other hand, the concept of family could be maintained
in the same way but the relationship between the three generations
6

will extend to four, five or even six generations knowing and enjoying
together which I consider positive.

● Marriage: I have been married about 5 times. Every relationship

brought me great and bad memories but everything is learning. The
idea of marriage has a different understanding. All know they aren't

about you and the relationships.
● Careers: I have studied several careers: management, marketing,
arts and scenes, dancing instructor, and now I'm a holistic coach. I
perceive my career like vehicule to live different lives.
● Family: More quality of time. See growing up my future generations.
● Longevity: People will live over 150 years, or even stop the aging
process.
● House: Living in the middle of nature with all the facilities. Cities are
falling down and people live near nature because they are more
aware about the importance of staying connected with nature to find
balance in their life.

Descriptive Essay

LIFE IN 2175

Rise and shine!!!!!....Another great day here in OA planet, the sound of the
immeasurably free are reflected in the singing of the birds through my
windows. My awesome house is surrounded by the mountains that every
day remind me everything is and always be perfect. But being in this
precious moment in my life wasn't easy at all. For sure, I hadn't had the
perfect life, in fact I didn't pretend to have it, thus I love it because it's mine
and that's all that counts. Now, I’m almost 150 years old, I will turn in a few
days, but I feel like a chick upon cracking the egg. After so many years,
after all the ups and downs and worries in between, I finally understood
that everything had a purpose and is to keep loving.

Other people can say that living over 150 years is insufferable, and some
others, like me, think the contraire. I strongly believe all is about the loop in
which you look at. My first husband was a police officer and when I got
married we were so immature. We were only 25 years old, so our love was
disparate and intolerable, some cheating and disrespect in between. He
definitely taught me about the importance of trust in order to reach an
empathic relationship. Tom and Freddy came then, the other two failed
marriages in my 50 and 80 years old, they taught me about not to be
presumptuous and stubborn. Then it came Juan Diego when I only was
105 years old, this was the surfer husband, the one who taught me about
self-confidence and keeping calm, he was calm like the sun in the sunset,
with him everything always seemed in balance and serene, but who said
that all the good will stay forever more?... Well, we decided to drift apart
without any big deal, we just knew it was inevitable and we accepted it
with tenderness and caring. After about 45 years I decided to stay alone,
plus, my fourth hubby, Juan Diego, had given me three vigorous children to
9

raise, so it took a while to go back to my center again, mom mode was on

after all!. Now Shawn is my ultimate husband who is a fascinating mystery
like a pandora box. There are beautiful things inside and there is something
that makes me keep staring at him. He has the capability of taking out my
shadows and lights. What I love the most about him is his caring for nature,
and how marvelous he seems when he finds something new in the woods,
he´s unique in his kind.

My careers were many, everyone has been excellent at learning to discover

my inner talents. In my twenties I used to feel utterly impulsive and without
any north like a broken faucet flooding the lavatory so I decided to study
Executive Secretary where I develop my sense of responsibility, discretion
and work in a fast paced environment. On my 50´s after my third divorce I
felt the call work on the market field, now most clear about me and my
inner energy I genuinely was ready to take the control of work, so after
study Marketing at the U I started to work in the insurance field… and let
me tell that was radically the opposite at my previous one, I took a long
time to get used to, my colleagues were what we called hungry sharks
chessing their big fish which means a hunters of sales, no matter what,
even there were those who had the guts to lie to get the sale. I became one
of those hungry sharks too, the adrenaline, the fire I felt after every big fish
caught, ohhhh!!!!! it was heaven in my eyes. Eventually, when I was in my
almost 90’s at the top of my sales career with a great reputation in the
industry with a lot of reward in my luxury office, one night I was done. I
mean I didn’t feel the thriller, the fire in my blood, but the opposite, I felt sick
of it and in shame of how far on personal values of honesty, empathy and
coherency I was. I did things brutally wrong like falsifying a sign, omitting
health personal information about clients to get attractives and competitive
fees… I was disrespectful in all ways possible. So I decided to make a
huge change and I became a Health Coach. This period of time I called the
awake period where I could find balance, coherence and empathy.
10

About my family, I had the privilege of seeing my children, grandchildren

and great great-grandchildren grow. Now we are a huge family where I can
interact as equals since all of them are adults now. I can exchange my
lifetime experiences with them so they don’t commit the same mistakes and
they gladly listen to me. I feel really thankful for having them in my life and
to have the chance to know them as mature adults.

When I was growing up, you could still see buildings and crowded cities
with a lot of pollution around. However, after several decades, little by little,
people started to become more aware about pollution and the stress that a
citizen's life bringed into their lives. The ecosystem and climate changes
made us aware about how wrong we were as a society. Ultimately people
started to relocate to the forest, the mountains and the beach, we stopped
to buy chemical and non organic food, and we were replaced by green
houses in our backyard. but well also we have those elderly.mindset people
that are still in the big and crowded city fighting for stay just like that. For
my part I’m so happy to live in the middle of nature with all the facilities.
Now, I really appreciate my life and the precious moments I collect around
this beautiful place.

Despite all my circumstances, all the bad moments and challenges I´d
passed during my almost 150 years of life I can say thank you live! All the
insufferable and sometimes impulsive things I did were genuinely
perfect to develop my character, my personality, my feelings and my love
for this experience called life.
