History of Rock and Roll
Rock and roll, or simply also called rock, is a musical genre with a marked rhythm that is derived from the
mixture of several genres of American folklore such as rhythm and blues , country and western and that
emerged in the 1950s and remains to this day and still very popular.
The term "rock and roll" was first used by Alan Freed , a DJ for a radio station in Cleveland , who used the
term to title his radio show. Since then it was used to call all the musical genres that are derived from it since
it is the only musical aspect of this type. But as many genres derived from rock and roll later became very
popular, the word “rock” began to be used, that is, rock music, to call all genres with similar characteristics.
In this way, the term rock derives from the term rock and roll, but today it retains two meanings according to
the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language : a characteristic musical genre popularized in the 1950s (which
corresponds to the definition of rock and roll). and each of the various musical genres derived from rock and
roll, which would, therefore, be the definition of the contemporary rock music genre, and which has
previously met the term rock and roll.
In times of slavery in the United States, black communities developed a musical style in which religious
chants and their own rhythms predominated, influenced by African rhythms and sounds, which later
materialized in the blues, while at the same time white musicians They developed the musical genre called
country and the appearance of the electric guitar would give birth to what was called rhythm and blues , the
father of rock and roll. Rock and roll (or rock and roll) appeared as a defined musical genre in the United
States in the 1950s. Early rock and roll combined elements of blues , boogie woogie , and jazz with influences
from Appalachian folk music, gospel , country, and specialized western music. Muddy Waters has often been
credited as the musician who "paved" the way to rock and roll.
All music critics agree on Muddy Waters as a precursor of rock and roll, but there are those who date the
origin of rock and roll in 1954 , with the recording work of Bill Haley and his group Bill Haley and the
Haley's Comets. Others consider Muddy Waters as its creator. Little Richard or Elvis Presley and they also
choose 1954 as the date of the beginning of rock and roll, the year in which Presley released his first album.
Among the notable musicians of the time we can mention Little Richard, Bo Diddley , Fats Domino , Buddy
Holly , Gene Vincent among others.
Chuck Berry Elvis Presley
Starting in the 60s, rock and roll had an important development and evolution that was expressed through a
large number of bands and a variety of rhythms and styles, becoming a cultural and musical phenomenon that
spread around the world and gave way to the genre called rock or rock music , which would mark a milestone
among the nascent young generation of the 60s. The style is a rhythmic conjunction that is essentially based
on black music. The popularization of rock and roll allowed many musicians to express themselves and spread
it in local and national media. That's the story of many black rockers, like Chuck Berry himself. Among these
genres were rockabilly , doo wop or hard rock , and phenomena such as the Teen Idols or the Girl Groups , the
latter sponsored mainly by Phil Spector and from him genres such as heavy metal , garage rock , punk rock ,
progressive rock or glam , and among all of them there are still common elements from rock n' roll. Thus,
Lennon defined Glam as "rock n' roll with lipstick", and some hard rock or heavy metal artists like Motörhead
or AC/DC like to define themselves as rock n' roll musicians.
MUSICAL ANALYSIS
In its beginnings, rock and roll was a style of music without any white influence that used new guitar
amplification techniques to begin to give it the fundamental role that would characterize it for the rest of the
century. Apart from the guitar, the drums and the piano were equally fundamental elements.
The chord progression is originally from the blues , i.e. Fundamental - Subdominant - Fundamental -
Dominant - Subdominant - Fundamental; but the tempo is very high, it also included arrangements and voices
for metal sections and choirs.
Improvisation also plays a role within the genre, using the pentatonic scale with a couple of accidentals, which
later became known as the " blues scale ".
