Features [ edit ]
Dance comprises a wide spectrum of musical genres with percussive content that, to a
large extent, are heirs of the electronic music of Kraftwerk and the disco music of the 1970s
. This music was born and popularized in different club environments in the 1980s . By the
early 1990s , the presence of electronic dance music within contemporary culture had
spread widely, beginning to be studied academically in scientific areas such as history,
culture and sociology. Electronic instruments such as the synthesizer , the drum machine
and the sequencer are used for its creation. The unique sounds of these instruments are
generally emphasized, even when the sound of other traditional acoustic instruments is
imitated. Sometimes it also includes music not primarily intended for dance, but which is
derived in any case from some genre of dance-oriented electronic music.
Musical styles
The most popular genres within dance such as dance-pop and euro-dance adopt several
characteristics of other genres (House, Techno, Trance, Pop among others), without having
absolutely their own characteristics, they are always influenced by the fashion of dance.
moment. [ citation needed ] Another characteristic is that their music is not complex due to its
commercial approach, handling simple and basic sounds, and combining them with happy
rhythms, being very different from Underground music. They have very simple pop
structures: verses, choruses, climax moments, etc. It is the most commercial variant of
electronics. The bass sound is usually TB-303 type (undistorted), the simple lyrics that talk
about love or party, the drum sounds are mostly 909 type, includes few rhythmic variations,
some filter sweep, mostly female vocals and almost always a main melody made with some
type of sawtooth wave synth sound (usually played after a sung chorus).
Rhythms
Like all music, it is made up of several measures marked by the rhythm, which varies
depending on the type of electronic music in question, being differentiated mainly by the
sub-style it deals with. All songs use 4/4 time signature, only varying the tempo .
History [ edit ]
Dance-pop from 87 to 91 [ edit ]
Although it is not Dance itself, this evolution of disco and synthpop appeared with more
marked rhythms thanks to the appearance of new, more powerful drum machines. In Italy
this evolution began gradually from Italo disco with Spagna and Sabrina among others and
in Central Europe with Modern Talking and CC Catch . In UK The producers Stock-Aitken &
Waterman [SAW] released from 1986-87 to different singers with this more evolved sound
Rick Astley "Never gonna give you up", "Together forever" among others, Sinitta with "Toy
Boy" and " Cross my heart", Bananarama with "Venus", "Love in the 1st degree"..., Mel &
Kim with "Respectable" among others, and in the USA, parallel to the development of
Chicago House and Techno from Detroit, some artists like Billy Ocean "Get into my car"
also began to mark the rhythms of synthpop more.
In the mid-1990s, commercial Dance music reached the top, being very popular in all
European countries, thanks to a commercial boom in sales of the genre thanks to massive
broadcasting on radios and nightclubs by DJs, who in many cases were also producers of
some of the fashionable bands.
Eurodance, first generation, from 92 to 96 [ edit ]
It begins with a more melodic influence, a lot of melody and happy intonation and with the
appearance of remixed versions of songs from the 80s. There was also an even greater
acceleration up to 140-150 BPM. Alexia , Double U , Taleesa among others had more than
one hit between 1995 and 1996.
Different European countries see artists of this genre succeed. In Greece, Helena
Paparizou is considered the queen of dance, after her success with the group Antique . The
Moldovans from " O-Zone " had great international success with the single "Dragostea Din
Tei". Switzerland brings DJ BoBo , best known for the song "Chihuahua". And from
Germany the band Cascada is considered the most influential of the genre with its single
"Everytime We Touch", although Passion Fruit also had great success with the song "The
Rigga-Ding-Dong-Song".
Important exponents of this new stage are: Gigi D'Agostino "La Passion", Armand Van
Helden "King of my castle", Miss Papaya "Sugarboy", Smile.DK "Butterfly", Toy Box
"Tarzan & Jane", and Paridisio "Let's Go To The Disco" among others.
Commercial return
After the disappearance of the commercial environment of dance music and eurodance,
following the dissolution during the last stage of 2002 of numerous groups that set the trend
during the last years of the 90s and the first years of the new century, such as Eiffel 65,
Alexia, Vengaboys, French Affair, Ace Of Base, etc. Dance and Eurodance music
subsisted away from the general public outside their countries of origin, with some
exceptions, taking their place in the commercial environment during the 2003-2008 period
for genres such as hip hop or reggaeton.
The contribution of the Spanish singer Soraya Arnelas to the promotion of the Eurodance
genre in Europe and Spain has also been notable, especially due to the success achieved
by her latest album Dreamer.
