Fundamentals of Engineering Materials (EFD008U2M)

Lecture 1: Course Introduction

10 August 2022

Course Coordinator: Dr Shantanu V. Madge

Associate Professor
Department of Materials Engineering
IIT Jammu

1
Course delivery

• A large auditorium can handle 200-400 students.

• At present, we have to split into two rooms 101 and 103.
• The strategy used will be, in-person lectures in one room and
live telecast in the other.
• The in-person lectures will be held in these rooms on alternate
days.

2
Who will be teaching this course?

Dr Shantanu Madge
and
some parts will be taught by
Dr N. Srinivasan

Teaching Assistants

Ambuj Pathak
Anant Kumar Gupta

3
Welcome note from the Department of Materials Engineering

The Materials Engineering Department is still very young, founded in 2019.

The department is growing, with new laboratories for UG and research

work.

4
What we do -- Broad Areas of work in the Department

• Materials Development
• Materials processing, e.g., additive Manufacturing.
• Polymers
• Metal Extraction.
• Mechanical behaviour of materials.

• Materials Characterization
• State-of-the-art Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) installed.

5
A broad theme of this course

• The Structure of Materials

• Crystal Structures, Lattices; Directions and planes in crystals etc.
• Defects in metallic crystals.
• Diffusion in materials
• Phase diagrams and Phase Transformations in materials
• Basics of the mechanical properties of materials.
• Polymeric/Ceramic materials and composites.
• If possible, additional topics of relevance.

General Relevance of Materials to Engineering

• Buildings: Steel structures are often used for construction. Earthquake-resistant

materials can be important.
• Chemical Plants: Materials resistant to chemicals are required.
• General Machinery: Materials need to be strong enough.
• Computers: Materials enable data storage (DVDs, pen drives etc). Software development
for Materials Engineering often needs some knowledge of Materials Engineering.
• A sombre thought:
• Not enough to merely rely on a database for engineering design, for real innovation.
• Engineers/Designers who failed to innovate are extinct!

Outcome of this course

• Familiarity with the essential concepts.
• A foundation that would enable students to pursue further courses in Engineering.
• Help you become more effective in making materials-related decisions in your chosen branch of
Engineering.
