(Question based Excellence) for CSE Prelims 2024

Class – 03
SET 1
1. (b)
Option B is justified from the last sentence in the passage. It is also the focus of the entire passage.
The remaining options are contradictory to the passage
Hence, the correct answer is Option B.

2. (d)
Statements 1(first 6 lines states opposite of statement) and 2 (last 6 lines states opposite of
statement) are contradictory to the passage
Hence Option D is the Correct Answer.

3. (b)
The passage talks about how military intervention can prove effective in cases where political
leadership fails, and its withdrawal when political development is in place. Therefore, it is assumed
that the military fills the political vacuum. Option B is therefore correct.
Option A is incorrect because the passage does not solely focus on how military power can help
when political leader is ineffective, it also mention military withdrawal where political development
has taken place.
Option C is incorrect because the passage only says that the military can be helpful when politics
fails. It does not say that military intervention is unavoidable or inevitable for development.
Hence Option B is correct answer.

4. (b)
The passage has spoken against the people who propagate the claim that increasing funding for
weapon building will urge the neighbouring countries to wage war against us. The passage says that
these people are using a false argument. So, the most valid assumption is the converse of the claim
made by the people. Therefore, this would be that increasing funding in weapon building industries
would discourage (instead of urge) neighbouring countries to wage war against us.
Option B is the closest to this.
Option A follows the same false logic used by the people
Option C uses “state of the art” which is not supported by the passage.
Option D with “wasting our resources” is unrelated to the argument.
Hence, the correct answer is Option B.

5. (a)
In the passage it is concluded that States cut down on costs by adopting fossil fuels instead of
renewable energy as it is more expensive. This conclusion is based on the basic premise or
assumption that the States with higher per capita income are capable of adopting renewable energy
as they have the necessary capital required for it. This is reflected in Option A. Hence, Option A is the
correct answer.

SET 2
1. (d)
Option (d): Discuss reasons why certain types of storms receive more study than others Answer lies in starting
3/4 lines of 2nd paragraph.
1st para is basically an introduction paragraph.

2. (c)
The passage says, “Northeasters, whose diffuse nature makes them difficult to categorize, are relatively weak
low-pressure systems with winds that rarely acquire the strength of even the smallest hurricane” Option (c) is
the correct answer.

3. (a)
1st Paragraph: “The storms most studied by climatologists have been those that are most easily understood by
taking atmospheric measurements. Hurricanes and tornadoes,”
2nd Paragraph: “But other equally destructive storms have not been so thoroughly researched, perhaps
because they are more difficult to study.”
The correct answer is option (a).

4. (d)
Option (a): The argument says that the use of daylight headlights lowers the collision rate the more north of
the equator you go. Therefore, daylight headlight use in the continental U.S. would help reduce the collision
rate.
Option (b): From the prompt, we do not know anything about which other factors account for collisions in
countries north of the U.S. So we can’t say that poor visibility is the most important factor.
Option (c): This one is tempting because you can make the connection that countries up north have to use
daytime headlights, so they are less likely to get into accidents during the daytime. But we do not know what
the original proportion of either the U.S or northern countries are. So while daytime headlight reduces
collision rate, without knowing the original proportion, we cannot say that the U.S. has more daytime
collisions.
Option (d): Those countries that have the laws are the ones that are more north of the United States, and thus
the ones farther from the equator. The farther from the equator, the more important the use of daytime

headlights. So the use of daytime headlights in the U.S. would be helpful, but probably not so much as in
countries north of the U.S. This is the correct answer.
