Grade V - VI English Summer Activities

Let’s learn through the summer! Below are some fun activities where you’ll get to read from
around the world, listen to some famous talks, play fun learning games and be a writer!

Keep an English Activity Journal or simply create a Word / Google doc as one. This can be
submitted or emailed to your English teacher when they ask for it. You may use the left
over pages from your Grade V English notebook as your Summer Activity Journal.

Soft copies of this document, attached resources and reading books can be accessed in
your Grade V English Google Classroom.

Happy learning 

2
Listening

Listening is the secret to discover great stories. Let’s have some fun listening lessons!

1. Meet the Plastic-Free Boy who lives in New South Wales and is your age! He feels
very strongly about freeing our oceans of plastic pollution – do you? Listen to what
Arlian has to say at https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/video-zone/plastic-
ocean-campaigner.
You may also want to play the listening comprehension games and do the activity given at
the same link.

2. So, Netizens, what safety rules do you follow when exploring the digital world? Come,
listen to a song about this at https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/video-zone/we-
the-digital-citizens. You may also want to play the games and do the activity on the same
link. Sing along the song and play it to your younger siblings.

3. The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame’s children’s classic, allows every person who has always wished animals could talk, to
dream a little more. In this amazing book, Mole, Ratty, Mr. Toad and Badger form a tight friendship and have many adventures,
together. Listen to chapter 1 of this story at http://www.loyalbooks.com/book/the-wind-in-the-willows-by-kenneth-grahame and
visualize the world Mole explores. Train your mind to concentrate, listen closely and feel pictures building out of the heard words!
You may want to listen to the whole audio book at the same link or take a copy of the novel and enjoy reading the rest of it!

4. Do you know what it means to have a growth mindset? Find out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUJkbWNnNy4
Think about the power of ‘’yet’’. Notice how the speaker uses figurative language to talk about good and harsh times in life.
Reflect on whether you have a growth mindset or are you not there yet. Post a note in your Google Classroom or write an email to
your teacher about these thoughts.

3
Speaking

Speech is power – speech is to persuade, to convert, compel. - Emerson

1. A ‘thunk’ is a beguilingly simple-looking question about everyday things that

stops you in your tracks and helps you start looking at the world in a whole
new light. At the same time it encourages you to engage in verbal fisticuffs
with the people sitting next to you and, if used properly, always leads to
severe brain ache!!
So are you ready for thunking your family and friends? Attached is a list of
questions that you can ask them. Make them think and give their point of view.
Develop the conversation with whys and hows! The objective is using correct English to carry out at least two meaningful
discussions / arguments on the critically creative questions.
Some guiding questions for discussion are:
Can you say why you think that? • What do you mean by…? • Can you give an example? • Are there any exceptions?

4
2. Solution to Ocean Plastic Pollution: With your family, at the dinner table or during family
time in the lounge, discuss ways in which you can reduce plastic pollution so that our oceans
may be saved.
Be sure to present plenty of practical ideas that you can start doing right away!
You may want to understand the causes and effects of plastic pollution, and gain some ideas
for conservation of the ocean environment from the videos here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeJVq5Pbjas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6xlNyWPpB8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFuBJjrqQfQ
Also record a 2 minute video telling the audience the steps you have decided to take. Upload
this in your Google Classroom.
Don’t forget to make a difference by practicing what you preach 

3. Sharpen your persuasive skills, hone your argumentative faculties! You are to convince an elder on any one of the following. Be
clear and specific, give reasons and examples and use correct English!
a. Lego is an educational toy!
b. Give me more PlayStation time instead of just saying ‘good job’!
c. Pizzas aren’t junk!
d. Holidays are for sleeping, not for summer camps!

CPE 5 Learner’s Book. 
8
Grammar & Punctuation

Grammar can be fun! Do these exercises to keep your grammar in

good health!

1. Let’s dive deep into using prepositions accurately! First,

revise the what, why and how of prepositions by watching the
videos at these links: (20) Prepositions for Kids - YouTube
and Meet the preposition (video) | Khan Academy.
Next, read Getting Started 1 at pg 152 of CPE 5 and then do
Getting Started 2, 1a, 1c and 1d in your journals to practice
using prepositions appropriately.
It’s time for some game fun now. Use the links below to play games and attempt a quiz related to using prepositions.
https://www.gamestolearnenglish.com/prepositions-game/ (position the object game)
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/grammar-practice/prepositions-time (grouping and sentence ordering games)
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/grammar-practice/prepositions-place (positioning and sentence ordering games)
https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=nzuwmjcwycvb (quiz about use of
different types of prepositions)
Now that you have enough practice, challenge yourself to do the attached activity sheets
and tests for prepositions of place and time.

2. Homophones and homonyms are real fun! Review homophones at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgAtoJxOj28 and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXaq6N98kkA, and homonyms at What is a homonym
with 10 examples - Bing video.
Read Language Focus on pg 216 of your Grade V English textbook and then use your
knowledge to fill in blanks on the same page.
9
Next, test yourself by attempting some fun quizzes and playing some games at the following links:
https://www.ecenglish.com/learnenglish/lessons/homophones-quiz (choose the correct option quiz)
https://www.classace.io/learn/spelling/4thgrade/homophones-4 (a listen-and-write game)
https://www.turtlediary.com/game/homonym-game.html (homonyms memory game)

3. Remember you studied modals in Grade V? Let’s revisit them once again to master them!
Let’s begin by recapping through a video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6hPi_Q0l_E. Follow by playing some very
interesting games at these links:
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/grammar-practice/modals-can-and-cant
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/grammar-practice/modals-could-and-couldnt
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/grammar-practice/modals-must-and-mustnt

Next, do the attached activity sheets and take the practice tests for ‘can & can’t’,
‘could and couldn’t’ and ‘must and mustn’t’. Score yourself by accessing the answer
keys at the above links!
Lastly, challenge yourself to do the attached worksheet titled ‘Complete the Sentence
with Modal Verbs’. Try to do it independently; it’s okay if you make mistakes or are
confused. You can take help from an elder, go back to the video to recheck the
meaning or look up the modal in a dictionary to confirm its correct usage.
The worksheet is followed by its answer key so that you can self-check and give
yourself a proud badge for doing well or a cute smiley for trying hard!  

10
Vocabulary & Spelling

You’re in for some very interesting vocabulary and spelling activities! Keep learning new
words and their spelling, but don’t forget the ones you’re already friends with! 

1. Love playing word games? Doing crosswords and solving anagrams? So, here’s a
super interesting challenge for you! Have fun completing the attached Spelling
and Vocabulary Activity Sheets (Unit 1).
You must make friends with the new words you come across; by looking up their
meaning in the school dictionary or online at
https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/. You may also need to use a
thesaurus for some puzzles. Use your school thesaurus or an online one at
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/thesaurus/.

2. Be an editor now; spell the misspelled

words correctly in the attached worksheet
titled ‘Spelling Challenge’.
3. Time to be a spelling detective! Spot the correctly spelled words in the ‘Spell Check’ activity
sheet.

4. Find the attached ‘Spelling Word List for Year 5 and Year 6’. Make sure you know how to
spell at least half of these words.
Try to review them in creative ways such as by playing hangman with these words with a friend or
sibling, having an elder take dictations, or by covering the word and writing it in the air, or better
still by having fun spelling out the word in sand or making its letters with slime or clay!!
The idea is ‘learning by doing’ - scientific research proves that our minds tend to retain
information gained in such ways much longer than done through rote memorization.
11
Also make sure you know the meaning and usage of these words. You can consult your school dictionary or https://www.merriam-
webster.com/ online.
Next, use five words from the word list in sentences of your own in your journal.

I hope you enjoyed these summer activities! And I’m sure you’ve learnt a lot on the way.

Keep growing, keep learning 

Good luck for the next academic year!

Love,

Your Grade V English Teacher
