Getting Your Child to Write
LEARNING BENEFITS
Creativity | Self-Expression | Writing
Establishing good writing habits and making the act of writing, ‘a fun’ and not a chore, will help your children tremendously
in their lifelong journey of learning. Writing skills are imperative to success, even in today's world where informal writing is
accepted on a personal level. Professionally, our children's written words will forever show their ability to communicate
and demonstrate their level of education.Writing at a young age helps our children in two very important ways: Writing
helps them organize their thoughts and express themselves clearly. A good way to get children to do this is to ask them to
write down what they want to say. Writing also helps children to enhance their reading abilities by putting letters and
sounds together. Below are some ideas to get your kids to write on a regular basis. They'll feel proud when they’ll
accomplish these fun ways to communicate.
Everyday writing: Have your children help you write up your weekly grocery or “to do” list. Leave them notes in their
lunch boxes each day and ask them to write you a note back.
Birthday cards: Home-made birthday cards for their friends and family are not only great gifts for the receivers but a
creative way to show your kids how writing can make someone feel happy. They can combine drawing and writing to make
special cards.
Say thanks in writing: Have your children write thank-you notes for their own birthday and holiday gifts, or when
someone is especially nice to them. If the thank-you notes are to relatives, ask them to call your child upon receipt and tell
them how thrilled they were to get a hand-written note from them.
Letters to family and friends: If family and friends live out of town, ask your kids to write them letters to tell them about
their day, week, or a special outing they went on. Your children will be super excited when they receive a letter back, too.
Write a story on a visual cue: If your children like to draw, ask them to write a story based on a recent drawing they made.
Alternately, you can choose a photograph and ask them to write a story based on what is happening in the photo.

02 www.rootsschool.edu.pk
KEEP YOUR CHILD'S BRAIN GROWING OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS!
Creative play into a story: If your children have created a make-believe world with their dolls or toys, ask them to
write down a story based on this world. Get them to think about doing this when you see them actually in the middle
of their creative play so they can try to remember the details. They can also write biographies based on each toy's
life: where they were born, where they live, who their parents are, who they are married to, who their children are,
who their best friends are, what they like to do, etc. The best way to get children excited about writing is to have
them practice it often. Do not point out misspellings, incomplete sentences, missing words, bad grammar, or poor
handwriting, which at this stage is the part of the learning process. Focus instead on the content of the writing and
any attempts at descriptive writing.

Ways a Parent can Help with Reading:-

Let your child see you reading! Have magazines and books in your home.
1
Help your child find appropriate word & reading games on the computer.
2 Use a dictionary! Help your child look up new words they read or hear.
Read mysteries with your child and try to figure out the clues together.
3
Movie version coming out?
4 Read the book together first, then talk about which you liked better.
Set aside a time and place for your child to read, a comfy chair and a reading
5 light in a quiet place.
Visit your public library regularly. Look for and read together the books that
6 were your favorites when you were a kid.
Encourage your child to write-letters, thank you notes, emails, journals, lists,
7 stories about their own trips, events, and daily life.
Ask your child questions about what he or she is reading, such as:
8 What is the story about?
Who are the important characters in the story?
Where does the story take place?
Why do you think the character made that choice?
Why did that happen?
How did you know about....?
Would you recommend this book to your friends?
Ask your child to draw a comic strip about what happened in the story.
9 Provide word searches, crossword and other word games and puzzles,
or help your child make his/her own.

DIG INTO READING
Adults who work with children are constantly “on” as role models.
None of us can be perfect, so being a perfect child care-provider or parent is out of the question. Still, we can all learn
from our mistakes or the mistakes of others. We can anticipate our strengths and weaknesses and attempt to limit or
work around them. These value oriented stories are good models for children to read and experience. Young children
cannot understand the complex thinking of an adult, but they can catch pieces of what we do and say, and these pieces
can become the single concept that helps a child learn.

The Value of the Arts in the early year schooling:
Creative Arts is an integral part of every early childhood programme. Arts experiences in school
not only contribute to children's artistic and creative development but also to a wide range of skills
in other areas, including perceptual, cognitive, language and social skills.
Artistic development in High Scope classrooms focuses on the five areas identified in High
Scope's key developmental indicators (KDIs) for creative arts. A brief summary of each area
follows:
KDIs in Creative Arts
Art: Children express and represent what they observe, think, imagine, and feel through
two- and three-dimensional art.
Music: Children express and represent what they observe, think, imagine, and feel
through music.
Movement: Children express and represent what they observe, think,
imagine, and feel through movement.
Pretend play: Children express and represent what they observe,
think, imagine, and feel through pretend play.
Appreciating the arts: Children appreciate the creative arts.

Milestones for a child’s social and emotional skills, and note how your child is doing in each area:
Can correctly state his gender and age.
Can recite her first and last names, and the names of parents.
Takes care of his own needs, such as washing hands and dressing.

Sand the edges and corners of these to avoid splinters. Also use sticks, milk crates, tarps,
sheets of cardboard, blankets, pine cones, corn stalks, reeds, etc.
Tools and Toys
Keep handy a variety of tools and toys to help kids explore and play with nature — e.g.,
insect nets, bug houses, magnifiers, binoculars, spades, scoopers, sieves, colanders,
buckets, rakes, small plastic containers, pots and pans, watering cans, etc.
Bird Houses
Kids like to watch nest building activity, and then see (and hear) the babies! Not all bird
houses are alike, though; swallow, wren, or bluebird boxes are usually good choices. Bird
watching is a good hobby. Encourage this hobby. Site them wisely, as they can produce

HANDS ON ACTIVITY:
A) Pollution affects the food we eat-
Air pollution causes acid rain. As the air is polluted, rain water also
gets polluted when it passes through the polluted air. Polluted rain is
called acid rain.
Here's a simple Earth Day project that demonstrates how pollution
affects the soil and plants—and therefore our food supply.

First, begin by planting three identical bean seeds in three identical containers which have
wet soil.
Watch them grow a little every day.
When the plants are a couple of inches high, begin the next part of the experiment.
Take 3 jars of equal size.
In the first jar, put ½ cup lemon juice. Label its lid #1.
In the second jar, mix ¼ cup water and ¼ cup lemon juice. Label this jar's lid #2.
In the third jar, put only ½ cup water. Label its lid #3
Water first plant with the liquid that's in jar #1. Water second plant with the liquid in jar #2.
Water the third plant with the water in jar #3.

Kindly spend quality time with your kids by observing SHOW, TELL & TALK approach.
Revise numbers by counting objects in the environment from 1-30 in a sequence.
Observe and recognize different shapes within the environment as kids can identify 5 basic shapes i.e. circle, square,
triangle, rectangle and oval. Encourage them to draw their favourite characters or toys using these shapes. Help them as
they indulge in this creativity.

Read to your child.

The early years are crucial for a child's development and hence an ideal time to inculcate reading habit into children.
Children who read are more likely to have a more focused attention span, grasping power, outstanding academic records
and good memory too. Children are like a sponge and exposing them to the world of books will ensure they become
smart, inquisitive, imaginative adults. Books tell children that there is a lot more to the world that they know at present. In
a recent study conducted it was found that people who start reading since their early age have better interpersonal skills,
vocabulary and a better hold on written and spoken language. Children get to experience the world through the books
and stories they read. A simple story like The Little Red- riding hood or the Snowman can teach children to become a
better human and accept everyone irrespective of the differences.
You must read one story a day to your child at bed time. Talk about the picture, characters, colours and expressions. Put
simple WH question to your child e.g. who is this boy? What is his name? What is he holding in his hand? Do you like
pets? Have you kept a pet? What is the shape of the sun?
Play “I Spy Shapes” (ex. I see a triangle.) Discuss the shape and how many sides it has.
Read count aloud to twenty and make the kid write numbers 1-30 in the scrap book.

Play “I Spy” with colors as you travel in the car. (Ex. I spy a green truck.”)
Reading arouses imagination and curiosity and hence is the first step to intellect development of the young child.
Let your child count from 1 to 50 and play differed number games like snake and ladders, hop scotch, making figures by
joining dots etc. Here are a few activities for you to share with your child when he is free:
