Question 4
A resistor of 12 Ω is connected in series with a combination of 15 Ω and 20 Ω resistor in parallel. When a
voltage of 120 V is applied across the whole circuit find the current taken from the supply.

Question 5
Three parallel connected resistors when connected across a D.C. voltage source dissipate a total power of 72
W. The total current drawn is 6 A, the current flowing through the first resistor is 3 A and the second and third
resistors have equal value. What are the resistances of the three resistors ?

Calculate the voltage drop across the following electrical loads:

Question 1
A coil takes a current of 10.0 A and dissipates 1410 W when connected to a 230 V, 50 Hz sinusoidal supply.
When another coil is connected in parallel with it, the total current taken from the supply is 20.0 A at a power
factor of 0.866. Determine the current and the overall power factor when the coils are connected in series
across the same supply.

Question 2
An inductive circuit, in parallel with a non-inductive resistor of 20Ω, is connected across a 50 Hz supply. The
currents through the inductive circuit and the non-inductive resistor are 4.3 A and 2.7 A respectively, and the
current taken from the supply is 5.8 A.

The potential difference measured across a coil is 20 V when a direct current of 2 A is passed through it. With

A series a.c. circuit, ABCD, consists of a resistor AB, an inductor BC, of resistance R and inductance L, and a
resistor CD. When a current of 6.5 A flows through the circuit, the voltage drops across various points are:
VAB = 65 V; VBC = 124 V; VAC = 149 V. The supply voltage is 220 V at 50 Hz. Draw a phasor diagram to
scale showing all the resistive and reactive volt drops and, from the diagram.

1. The cross section of the core of a 4 KVA, 5000/500 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer having maximum
flux density 1.5 T is 500 cm2 . Determine
(a) Primary and secondary turns
(b) Emf per turn
The stacking factor of the core is 0.85.

2. The turns ratio of a transformer is 100/300, the primary winding is connected to a source of 3.3kV, 50

(c) The real and reactive power supplied by the source to the primary transformer
