RESKILLING AND ADVANDCED DIPLOMA


IN FINANCIAL MARKETS PROJECT
You’re Invited! 2020/2021 INTAKE
Apply for the following opportunity which is a joint project between the Department of Finance and Investment Management (UJ)
and the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA). This opportunity is for employees from companies whose core
business falls within the INSETA scope and have submitted a WSP and ATR for the current financial year may apply.

The Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets is a fully online, distance learning qualification allowing students to study from anywhere.
Potential students can apply for admission into the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets with an appropriate NQF Level 6
qualification. Alternatively, applications can be made on a RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) basis where applicants with 5 years or
more work experience, and who have passed the CFA Investment foundation program can apply for admission into the Advanced
Diploma in Financial Markets.

Under this project, students who meet the entry requirements and are accepted into the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets
through one of the channels described above, and complete all the modules successfully, will obtain an official SAQA accredited
qualification in the form of the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets. Students will also be able to register for two modules from
the Advanced Diploma in Real Estate, which is also a fully online, distance learning qualification.

The Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets is a one-year full time qualification, so this will require full commitment from the student.
UJ reserves the right to recoup any funds from the student should they fail to complete the programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
The admission requirements for this programme will adhere to the University of Johannesburg’s Policy for Admission and Selection
which is current at the time of the registration for this programme.

A student should have one of the following:

• New/Old NQF level 6 qualification with 3 years’ relevant work experience in financial markets; or
• New/Old NQF level 6 qualification in Finance; or
• 5 years’ relevant work experience in financial markets and successful completion of
the CFA Investment Foundations exam.

PURPOSE OF THE QUALIFICATION


The purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets (via online education) is to develop the student’s knowledge of the
discipline of financial markets and trading. The programme is comprised of a focused curriculum to prepare the student for a career
in financial markets. Mastering of the curriculum will provide students with the ability to synthesise financial market principles and
apply financial instruments in a professional manner. Fundamental knowledge of global investments relevant to the financial market
industry will be gained enabling the qualifying student to work in today’s world of professional financial markets industry. The
programme emphasises competence, integrity, and application of ethics in a professional environment. The successful student will gain
a global and South African financial market perspective and an in-depth understanding of the marketplace which will provide them
with a competitive advantage for employment.

The Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets consists of 11 online modules that run over the course of the year. Each module is 7 weeks
long, and consists of weekly assignments and assessments. Completing this qualification full time means that two modules are offered
and completed at the same time.

All fully online programmes use the “carousel model” of enrolment. This means that there are six intakes in a year, D1 to D6, with up
to three, 7 week modules offered during each intake. The online learning year starts in the second week of January, with the D1 intake,
and the final intake of the year, D6, starts in October. The model has been designed to allow for students to start in any given intake.

REQUIREMENTS FROM STUDENTS:

2. Submit the following documents to dfiminfo@uj.ac.za: certified copy of ID/ passport, Matric certificate, highest qualification

3. Only employees of companies whose core business falls within the INSETA scope and have submitted a WSP and ATR for the
current financial year may apply.

4. Applications will be subject to a selection process:

a. Applications will be for the 2020/2021 intake. Applications and acceptance to take place at the end of 2020,
whereas enrolment and registration for the qualification will take place in January 2021.
b. Levy payments must be up to date (for levy-paying companies)
c. Employers may only apply for funding on ONE of the grant programmes per learner offered by INSETA
d. Previous track record for INSETA funded training will be considered in funding application approval process
e. Learner must be permanently employed in insurance or related services sector and
f. Preference will be given to the candidates from designated group to support transformation of the sector
g. Applicants must meet the entry Requirements of the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets and
Advanced Diploma in Real Estate.

5. Applications that adhere to the above and meet the requirements, will be selected and notified.

6. Commitment to one-year qualification course in 2021. Complete all the modules for the Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets
and the two modules from the Advanced Diploma in Real Estate

7. Completing the application and submission of the required documents does not mean admission. Students, when selected, will be
notified and will then be required to officially apply and register for the Advanced Diploma in Financial markets in January 2021.

• Students will then be selected and accepted onto the project and formal notification will be sent in November.
• The Advanced Diploma will start in January 2021. Students will be required to apply in January before the start date
• Applications for this project and qualification will be for the 2020/2021 intake (and financial year).
