Lesson 2

Cheerful

MV: A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is
broken.(Proverbs 15:13, KJV)

There are two human conditions that are stated in this Bible verse, namely people who are
cheerful and people who are discouraged. How do we react or respond when we meet
cheerful people? Would have been nice. Although cheerfulness is common and very familiar
in everyday life, but many people do not experience it. Because cheerfulness is not something
we can make up on our own, or just an innate trait or temperament/feelings.

What are the characteristics of a cheerful person?

In general, cheerful people are: friendly, easy to smile, have a good sense of humor, like to
spend time with others, etc.
According to the General Indonesian Dictionary (KUBI): clean, holy, pure and a radiant
face. (meaning already in a pure heart makes a radiant face)

But what does CHEERFUL mean that we will learn:

ACE: Renouncing negative feelings and expressing optimism unto the Lord and others for
my salvation by living for Jesus Christ

-Gratefulness and joy overflowing because of the Salvation that God has given (apart from all
great fears) joy overflows: the child in Elizabeth's womb jumps for joy when she hears
Mary's greetings)
-An expression of gratitude for the goodness of God received in every moment of our lives.
(whatever we do cannot repay God's goodness)
- Signs of life for those who are already in Christ.

How can we be CHEERFUL?

“A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance”

1. MAKE SURE CHRIST is already in our hearts, cheerfulness is the fruit of the Holy
Spirit, working in our lives. Galatians 5:22 and continue to be led and controlled by
the Holy Spirit. Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of
life. Proverbs 4:23

2. THINKING POSITIVE (filling our minds with God's Word), what we put in our
minds shapes our thought patterns and actions. Philippians 4:8 "whatever is true,
whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, if there is anything called
virtue or if there is praise, think about these things" If we think about good things, we
will be filled with peace. Bad thoughts will cause damage to the soul and all kinds of
diseases.

3. SAY POSITIVE (Prayer, Thanksgiving, praise), pray a lot to God and talk to others
about God's goodness. Words are prayers. Even when we get bad news. Eli the priest
said, "He is the LORD, let him do what he sees as good" 1Samuel 3:18.
4. ACT POSITIVE (follow and do what God tells you to)
 when hurt, disappointed, angry...don't follow our desires but follow what God
says. Example: Cain was angry with Abel, the LORD rebuked (Genesis 4:6-
7a) "do good"

 When we are hated and betrayed, forgive as God has forgiven you remember
the story of Joseph (Genesis 50:20) "Those who are evil God change for good)

 OBEY WHAT is God's will even though there is a risk that we have to bear
for example: Jephthah's daughter.

Impact and blessings of a cheerful life:

 Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

 We become a blessing, people are blessed and God is glorified. (Christ is glorified
through our thoughts, words and actions).
