    Application This instruction provides guidelines on the DDB oil treatment and the relevant acceptance criteria. DDB oil is used for the Oil Impregnated Paper bushings (OIP). This instruction is applicable in all Units in AREVA T&D. The criteria specified shall be achieved by means of suitable equipment, which shall be defined, operated and maintained under the local Unit responsibility.

    Background The DDB oil used in OIP bushings is an insulating oil based on synthetic aromatic hydrocarbons. The dielectric performance of the OIP bushing is heavily impacted by the oil quality; besides the basic oil specific characteristics, the particle contents and the humidity content are the main factors to be controlled. The oil treatment process (filtering, degassing) has the purpose of removing the particles of a given size removing the humidity and the gas dissolved in the oil The machines and equipment to achieve such levels shall be properly designed and maintained.

    Safety precautions Operators shall be trained and authorized to operate on the equipment. They shall use / wear the necessary PPE, as defined by the local EHS policy. The equipment shall be under proper maintenance and condition. Environmental precautions Oil leakages shall be avoided. A suitable maintenance and verification program on the oil equipment shall be performed, to prevent possible oil leakages. Specific instructions and trained personnel shall be available. Quality precautions This activity requires that: equipment must be managed with a regular maintenance program. measuring instruments shall be calibrated. operators shall be qualified.

    Incoming material The general oil characteristics are specified by IEC 60867 Specification for unused insulating liquids based on synthetic aromatic hydrocarbons. The DDB oil shall be purchased only from approved suppliers; the technical specification is reported in Table 1.

    The oil is supplied either in drums or as bulk material (from tank truck). The Supplier shall provide a Test Certificate for each delivery, where some minimum information shall be reported see Table 2.

    The characteristics reported on the Certificate shall be verified on a sample basis; frequency of the sample measurements are decided locally, minimum every year; the measurements can be done either internally (if the local Unit has the necessary instruments) or by an authorized external laboratory.

    4.

    Oil treatment The incoming oil is normally stored in tanks, provided with a dehydrating breather. The oil treatment system provides the Unit with a suitable amount of treated oil, e.g. oil which can be used to feed the impregnation system. Such treated oil can be normally kept circulating in a closed loop, heated, filtered and under vacuum. Temperature: 50 to 60 C Vacuum: < 0,1 mbar

    Quality Control after treatment The treated oil can be used for impregnation if the criteria reported in Table 3 are met.
