Gremlin

Have you ever spent hours looking for something (keys, glasses, phone) only
to find it in an obvious place? How about lights burning out as you walk in a
room? Weird noises at night? YOU HAVE GREMLINS! Why not make a Gremlin
friend who will leave your things alone for a change? This is an Intermediate
level pattern. Please, read through carefully before beginning.

Materials needed:
Yarn Worsted Weight (4)
200 Yards of Camo, Green, Olive or whatever color you would like him to be.
150 Yards of light Beige.
A small amount of Red, White and Black for mouth. I used Caron SS because it’s
a bit thinner.
#3 Crochet Thread, small amount of red and black for eyes.
Hook- Size used
Susan Bates 3.75mm (F)
Susan Bates 3.25mm (D) (For inner ears)
Susan Bates 1.5mm steel (for eyes)

Other Materials Needed:


Polyfil
Size (12” tall when finished with the recommended yarn weight and hook)
Darning Needle
Wire cat brush

Common stitch abbreviations Dec: single crochet dec is most


Ch: Chain common in amigurumi, but can also
MR: magic ring be Hdc dec or Dc dec

Special Instructions:
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless noted. Use a stitch marker at
the beginning of each row. Use Invisible Decrease whenever possible for the
best result.
Invisible Decrease: Insert hook into FLO of next 2 stitches, YO and pull through a
loop (2 loops on hook) YO and pull through both loops. Basically, you are
treating the next two front loops as ONE stitch and otherwise working your
stitch normally.

Sew to head approximately 1-2 rows below eyebrows and 4-5 stitches apart in a
slight tilt upward at the outer corners following the countour of the face.

Mouth: Make one in Red worsted


changing to Black for last row.
Row 1: ch 17, sl st in 2nd ch, sc x 2, hdc
x 2, dc x 5, hdc x 2, sc x 2, sl st –
pulling through black for gums.
Working around the edges in BLO, ch
2, sl st across to corner, ch 2, sl st
across other side and do an invisible
join for best appearance. Leave an
end to sew to face.

Teeth: In white, embroider teeth over


top edge of mouth using ONE pass
through for each tooth. Make four
varying length small teeth on each
upper edge and in the middle of upper and lower edges. Make 2 long fangs in
between the sets of four on upper mouth.

Mouth is sewed over front of face at lowest edge with corners slightly upturned

Nose/Upper Lip piece: Make 1 in Camo ; you will begin by working around both
sides of a chain.
Round 1: Begin with the lip. ch 9, dc inc in 3rd st, dc x 1,dc inc, hdc x 1, dc inc,
dc x 1, dc inc, ch 3, sl st in same space. (11 on first side of chain)
Working down the other side of chain to make the nostrils : ch 1,[sl st, sc x 1], ch
3 and sk 2 st, sc x 1, ch 3 and sk 2 st,[sc x 1, sl st], turn (Make all of this fit across
the top of the lip on the other side of the chain with sl st at edges).
Round 2: ch 1, sc dec, sc x 3 over chain sl st, sc x 3 over chain, sc dec, sl st,

Goatee: Join 3 spikes in Camo using
surface crochet. Center front just
behind lower lip, and one on each side
of center front. Tallest stitches are
toward the front.
Beginning near round 17 and working
toward the front of chin over 3 spaces:
Sl st to join and sc x 1 in same space,
[hdc x 1, dc x 1], [dc x 1, tr x 1]. (5) FO
and weave end through front stitch for
stability. Pull all ends through neck
opening and tie in a knot to secure.

Ears: You will make one each (Ear 1 and Ear


2) using the 3.75mm hook in Camo
Using the 3.25mm hook you will make one
each in light Beige.

Back Spikes and Tail Piece: Make 1 in Camo
using Crocodile type stitch (Croc).
Tail Piece
Row 1: ch 4, dc x 1 in 4th chain from hook, ch
3, turn. (This equals 1 “V” stitch)
Row 2: You will be crocheting down one
side of the “V” stitch and up the other side.
Begin with 1st dc facing you as though it is
your chain.
dc x 4 along post of 1st dc (the ch 3 at the
end of row one is your 1st dc), turn so
second dc is facing you. dc x 5 along post of
2nd dc. (crocodile stitch made), ch 4, turn. (1
croc)

Row 3: You will be making two crocs, one on each edge of previous
croc, Across the top of the previous croc, [ch4, dc x 1] on 1st edge
(“V” st made). ch 1, dc x 1, ch 1, in center of previous croc, [dc x 1,
ch 1, dc x 1] on second edge (“V” st made). Ch 3, turn. (9)

Claw/Fingers/Toes. Beginning in Beige, changing to Camo and working in
rounds.
• Make 3 for each hand and foot for a total of 12, however, you will be
making two and FO, then using the third to join all three together for each
appendage. This means you will only FO on eight of them if you are making
them all at once.
• Leave a little extra at FO to stitch closed any openings left between
fingers after joining. Make sure these ends are on the outside of your work
as you join.

across the back of the second finger, and sc x 10 across the back, then the front

Once your fingers/toes are joined,

Shoulder: Make one for each side
Place arm with hand laying flat down the side of the body. Flatten arm from front
to back. With arm next to the side you will be joining to for reference, locate the
4sc in the center of that side and mark stitches 1 and 4. This is your opening, you
will leave these alone when you begin your rows. Re-center your stitchs so your
rows begin either before of after these stitches as needed to form a Shoulder.
Hip: Make one for each side.
Place leg with foot pointing forward and flatten top of leg front to back. Place
next to the side of the Gremlin you will be joining to. Locate the 4 sc in the center
of that side and mark stitches 1 and 4. This is your opening, you will leave these
alone when you begin your rows. Re-center your stitches so your rows begin
either before or after these stitches as needed to form a Hip. Proceed to ROWS

ROWS
Row 1: sc x 11, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 2: sc x 4, dec, sc x 5, ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 3: sc dec, sc x 6, sc dec, ch 1, turn. (8)
Row 4: sc dec, (sc x 1, sc dec) x 2. (5)

Joining Arms and Legs:


Line up HIP so that bottom of opening is at round 3 of the body and top of hip is
at approximately round 10. Pin to body. Begin sewing around the entire opening.
When you are nearly done, stuff the rest of the leg and the space between the
hip and body FIRMLY, finish sewing and FO.

Line up SHOULDER so that top opening is near round 26, and bottom of opening
is near round 20. Pin to body. Begin sewing around the entire opening. When you
are nearly done, stuff the rest of the arm and the space between the shoulder
and body FIRMLY, finish sewing and FO.

Mohawk Hair in White:


Make a chain equal to the length between the eyebrows
and the bottom of the back of the head. Count your
chains and multiply that number by 3.
Using that number, cut 15” strands of white yarn and
separate all the plies.
You will be using 1 ½ strands of yarn (6 plies for a 4-ply
yarn) for each chain space on both sides. Holding your
plies together and folded in half, join plies using the
latch hook method. Continue until chain is full, brush
strands with the wire cat brush until smooth, and sew to
head Mohawk style.
