DEPARTMENT OF PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL STUDIES

TO THE MENTOR TEACHER SCHOOL-BASED LEARNING

Dear Sir/Madam

Central University of Technology, FS (Bloemfontein Campus) hereby requests you to

take the B Ed (SP & FET) second year student teacher(s) for School-based Learning
under your guidance. Be assured that we see your role as vitally important, because
you take the place of all lecturers in the life of a student for the duration of his/her stay
at the school. They have a very heavy workload to complete during both SBL
sessions (12 Feb / 01 Mar 2024) and (09 July / 09 August 2024) and you are their
sole source of information.

First Semester:

During these weeks they must present at least three lessons, in SP

methodology to you as their mentor teacher. These lessons must be recorded
on the official university lesson plan form which we use for training purposes.
Please also use the official university assessment sheet. They need to keep a
daily diary of all school activities. Specific assignments need to be completed.

Second Semester:

We require that student teachers present six lessons, three in each of their FET
methodologies which must be recorded on the official university lesson plan
form. Please assess these lessons carefully on the official university
assessment sheet and discuss these assessments with the student teachers
afterwards. Please, no revision lessons!!

We request you therefore to take strong leadership in planning the daily activities of
the student teachers(s) by:

- giving clear instructions

- explaining concepts/methods with patience
- assessing students in an honest and fair manner
- showing willingness to share knowledge and information
- criticizing and advising in a positive way

Please orientate the student(s) regarding the following issues:

- policies about classroom and school management, school rules,

procedures and discipline
- student teacher’s timetable and subject matter to be taught

6
- textbooks, resource materials and teaching methods to be used in the
classroom
- seating arrangements – personal space for the student teacher(s).
- normal daily class routines and extra-curricular activities offered by the
school.
- expectations of what the student teacher(s) is/are to do while in your
classroom
- what to do when unfamiliar problems and situations arise and how to
handle it, e.g. a learner suffers an epileptic fit or a fist fight breaks out
between learners, etc.
- suggestions and tips for preparing learning activities and media.

It is expected of student teacher(s) to offer their help where possible. Please make
them feel part of your daily activities and expose them to a variety of learning
experiences. We thank you in advance for the positive influence you are going to
have in the lives of young student teachers. Without your cooperation it would be
impossible for us to provide properly trained teachers for our beloved profession.

Yours sincerely
