NETWORKING

INSTRUCTIONS:
(i) Attempt question ONE and any other TWO questions
(ii) DO NOT write on the question paper
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION ONE

a) Describe the hidden station and exposed station problem found in wireless networking.
(5 marks)
b) Briefly describe how the wireless LAN protocol CSMA/CA is able to control the hidden
station and exposed station problem. (6 marks)
c) List four advantages of using UDP over TCP. (4 marks)

d) The de facto standard for wireless LAN media access is the IEEE 802.11 standard. Why is
CSMA/CD not practical for wireless networks. List two reasons. (4 marks)
e) Explain what will happen when two applications (one using TCP, the other using UDP) that
want to send as much data as possible compete for bandwidth. (3 marks)
f) Explain any six difference between OSI and TCP/IP models (6 marks)
g) Distinguish between LAN, MAN and WAN networks. How do data rates vary between these
networks? (6 marks)
h) Explain the term network topology (2 marks)
i) Highlight any three advantages of ring topology (3 marks)
j) Discuss the following types of network topologies giving the major difference between them

i) Tree topology and star topology (3 marks)

ii) Ring topology and bus topology (3 marks)

QUESTION TWO

a) Within the Data Link Layer, we studied a variety of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols
to regulate access to a broadcast channel shared by many stations. For each of the following
MAC protocols, provide a brief description (either algorithmic or conceptual) of how it works.
Where possible, clarify the new features in each protocol that improve upon the MAC
protocols earlier in the list.
i) Pure ALOHA (3 marks)
ii) Slotted Aloha (3 marks)
iii) CSMA (3 marks)
iv) CSMA/CD (3 marks)
b) Describe the OSI reference model and explain the functions of each of its layers (8 marks)

QUESTION THREE

a) There are two popular technologies for Local Area Network (LAN) design, namely IEEE 802.3
Ethernet and IEEE 802.11 WiFi. Use your knowledge of these technologies to answer the
following questions.
i) What Datalink Layer service model is provided by each of these LAN technologies? How
are they similar? How are they different? (3 marks)
ii) List three similarities about LLC frames in Ethernet and WiFi (3 marks)
iii) Which of these two LAN technologies has the higher bit error rate, and why?
(2 marks)
iv)Which LAN technology provides better support for mobile users, and how? (2 marks)
v) List and explain any two other features of WiFi technology that are not available (or even
possible) in Ethernet LANs. (4 marks)
b) Describe connectionless oriented and connection oriented communications. Give advantages
and disadvantages in each (6 marks)

QUESTION FOUR

a) Discuss key improvement that Ethernet made over Aloha. (4 marks)

b) Explain three advantages and three disadvantages of using token rings instead of Ethernet.
(6 marks)
c) Give two reasons for using layered architecture (4 marks)
d) Explain your understanding of IPv6. List some of its advantages over IPv4. (6 marks)

QUESTION FIVE

a) Explain in detail your understanding of CSMA/CD Protocol. How does it detect collision?
(5 marks)
b) The de facto standard for wireless Local Area Network media access is the IEEE 802.11
standard. Explain why CSMA/CD is not practical for wireless networks. (3 marks)
c) Explain the following types of transmission mode giving examples in each case

i) Simplex (2 marks)

ii) Half-duplex (2 marks)

iii) Full-duplex (2 marks)

d) Give the protocol stack for both OSI and TCP/IP side by side and explain the interrelationship
between key layers of the models. (6 marks)
