Taking mental health seriously

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects
how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to
others, and make healthy choices.

Close to 60 to 70 million people in the country suffer from common and severe mental
disorders. India is the world’s suicide capital with over 2.6 lakh cases of suicide in a
year. WHO statistics say the average suicide rate in India is 10.9 for every lakh
people.

Globally, the total number of people with depression was estimated to exceed 300
million in 2015, equivalent to 4.3% of the world’s population. In India, the National
Mental Health Survey 2015-16 revealed that nearly 15% Indian adults need active
intervention for one or more mental health issues and one in 20 Indians suffers from
depression. It is estimated that in 2012, India had over 258 000 suicides, with the age-
group of 15-49 years being most affected.

It is very important to take mental health seriously as it can impact physical health of
human beings as well. Here are some of the ways that physical health can be
influenced by mental health.

1. Stress and the Body

Chronic stress from mental health issues like anxiety or depression can lead to physical
symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and digestive problems. Long-term
stress can also weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to
illnesses.
2. Sleep Patterns

Mental health disorders often disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia or

oversleeping. Poor sleep quality can contribute to a range of physical health problems,
including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and a weakened immune response.
3. Lifestyle Choices

Mental health can influence lifestyle choices that directly impact physical health. For
example, depression and anxiety can lead to poor diet, lack of exercise, and substance
abuse. These behaviors increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and other chronic
conditions.
4. Chronic Illness
People with severe mental health conditions are at higher risk for developing chronic
illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues. The stress and negative
emotions associated with mental health issues can exacerbate these conditions, leading
to poorer health outcomes.
5. Pain Perception

Mental health disorders can affect how individuals perceive and experience pain.
Anxiety and depression can heighten the perception of pain, making chronic pain
conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia more difficult to manage.
6. Inflammation

Mental health issues can lead to increased levels of inflammation in the body. Chronic
inflammation is associated with numerous health problems, including cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.
7. Hormonal Imbalances

Mental health conditions can disrupt the balance of hormones in the body, affecting
processes like metabolism, energy levels, and the body’s ability to manage stress. This
imbalance can contribute to physical health problems over time.
8. Health Behaviors

Individuals struggling with mental health may be less likely to engage in regular physical
activity or adhere to medical advice and treatment plans. This can lead to the
progression of physical health issues and reduced overall well-being.

When someone has a broken leg, they go to see a doctor to get healed. It is important
to take mental health as seriously as physical health. In recent years, the significance of
mental health has gained more attention, yet many still underestimate its importance
compared to physical health.

We have seen how mental health can impact physical health. It can also impact social
relationships as well as work productivity as well as quality of life.
Mental health significantly impacts overall quality of life. Poor mental health can hinder
one’s ability to enjoy life, maintain relationships, and perform daily activities. It affects
emotional well-being, motivation, and the capacity to cope with life's challenges.

Mental health issues can greatly affect productivity and performance at work. Conditions
such as anxiety and depression can impair concentration, decision-making, and
efficiency. Addressing mental health can lead to better job performance, creativity, and
job satisfaction.
Good mental health is essential for maintaining healthy relationships. Mental health
issues can strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Addressing mental
health fosters better communication, empathy, and understanding in relationships.
Mental health care also builds emotional resilience, enabling individuals to cope better
with stress, adversity, and change. Resilience enhances one’s ability to bounce back
from setbacks and maintain a positive outlook on life.
