new lesson

D. Discussing new The teacher will discuss the following.

concepts and
practicing new Degrees of
skills #1 Adjectives

Adjectives are words that describe nouns or

pronouns. What are adjectives again?

“Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns.”

Great! Adjectives are words that usually use to

describe nouns or pronouns.

Did you know that adjectives have degrees in

comparing nouns or pronouns?

“Yes, Ma’am Cath.”

Adjectives have three (3) degrees of comparison.

1. Positive
2. Comparative
3. Superlativ

e Are we clear?

“Yes ma’am.”

Let’s continue discussing each of the degree of

adjectives.

An adjective that does not compare a person or thing

with another is in the positive degree.

Here are the example sentences.

1. Jess is a tall kid.
2. My hair is long.
3. I am old enough.

Now, do we compare any nouns or pronouns in the

positive degree?

“No, Teacher we don’t compare anything or anyone in

the positive degree.”

Yes we don’t have.

Are you ready to learn the next degree od

adjectives? “Yes we are ready!”

Downloaded by AMABEL RESPETO

Okay, let have now a comparative degree. An adjective
that compares two person or things is in the
comparative degree.

1. Adding –er to one-syllable

adjectives. Example:
tall – taller short – shorter

2. Adding –r to one-syllable adjectives that end in –e.

Example:
brave – braver

3. Writing the last constant twice and then adding –

er for adjectives with a single short vowel ending
in a single

consonan
t.
Example:
big – bigger

4. Changing y to i then adding –er to adjectives that

end in –y.
Example:
funny – funnier
busy – busier

Here are the example sentences.

1. Joe is taller than Jess.
2. My hair is longer than her.
3. I am older than my bestfriend.

Can you see now the difference between positive

degree and comparative degree?

“Yes, ma’am.”

What are the letters that we usually add to make the

adjective in a comparative degree?

“Ma’am it’s –er or –r.”

Fantastic! Now, how many nouns or pronouns that we

compare to in a comparative degree?

“We compare two persons or things only.”

Very nice! It seems that you did follow the lesson. Let’s
move on now to the last degree of adjective.

An adjective that compares more than two persons or

things is in the superlative degree.

1. Adding –st to adjectives that end in –e .

Example:
brave braver bravest

2. Adding –est to one-syllable

adjectives. Example:
tall taller tallest
short shorter shortest

3. Writing the last constant twice and then adding –

est for adjectives with a single short vowel ending
in a single consonants.
Example:
big bigger biggest

4. Changing y to i then adding –est to adjectives that

end in –y.
Example:
funny funnier funniest
busy busier
busiest

Here are the example sentences.

1. Jose is the tallest among the three.
2. Sheila’s hair is the longest among us.

Downloaded by AMABEL RESPETO

3. Ate Anne is the oldest in our group.

What can you say now to superlative degree of

adjectives?

“In the superlative degree we compare more than two

persons or things.”

That right! Very well said.

The Teacher will ask questions to pupils.

1. What is adjective?

“Adjective is a word that describes nouns or

pronouns.” Okay, Very Good!

2. What are the degrees of adjectives? How are we

going to use it properly in regular adjectives?

“We have positive degree that compares nothing.

Next is positive degree that compares two persons or
things. And lastly, we have superlative degree that
compares more than two persons or things.”

Yes, it is correct. Very good answer. You did a great job!

Can you give me sentences using the 3 degrees of

adjectives? Answer may vary.

E. Discussing new The Teacher will show pictures of pizzas with different
concepts and slices and ask some the questions about it.
