Gas exchange

- Gas exchange takes

place inside the air
sac “alveoli”.
- Gas exchange means:
• Oxygen from air
into the blood
and carbon
dioxide from the
blood into the
air.

- Diffusion:
• The molecules move from where there are a lot of them to where
there are fewer of them.
• Example: -the oxygen diffuses from the air to the blood.
-the carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood to the air.

- The structure of alveoli:

- It is adapted to carry out gas exchange.
These adaptations such as:
1. Very thin wall. (G.R) so allow the diffusion of gases to be faster.
2. Large surface area. (G.R) so allow the diffusion of gases to be
faster.
3. Surrounded by blood capillaries. (G.R) so allow the diffusion of
gases to be faster.

Note: Carbon dioxide can be detected by using:” lime water”, it

turns lime water into cloudy.
