Activities

1.Prepare your Project Portfolio

This unit requires you to install a server according to a client’s requirements.

You are to assume that due to the age of the current server and less than reliable and
effective performance, the server needs to be replaced.

You will complete this task using the RTO’s physical environment or networking software. Your
assessor will advise you as to which option you will proceed with.

You will be collecting evidence for this unit in a Project Portfolio. The steps you need to take
are outlined below. Before you begin, complete page 4 of your Project Portfolio.

2.Write a Server Design Report

You are to review the requirements for the network server, which will include the required
performance and data migration specifications. Identify this information from the
ICTNWK540 Simulation Pack, plus additional information that your assessor will provide to
you based on the RTO Infrastructure.

Based on this information, you are to develop a Server Design Report. The template is
included in your Portfolio and will also include a request for approval of the Server
Design.

Prior to the following task, you should review the WHS Policy and Procedures provided to
make sure you are prepared to do the required health and safety checks prior to
installation.

Complete Section 2 of your Portfolio and submit it to your assessor.

3.Prepare for server installation

Prior to commencing the task, you are to meet with the client (your assessor) to explain
all of the health and safety issues that you need to ensure you attend to as per your
preparation in the previous task.

Identify the immediate safety hazards in the environment around you and explain the
risk control measures you will use. Your assessor will be checking throughout the
assessment to make sure you apply these. You will also note these down in your Portfolio.

You are also to advise the client verbally (your assessor) of the deployment and potential
down time as per your Server Design Report to ensure that all staff are aware of this and
can plan their work accordingly.

Finally back up all the local data prior to installation. Take a screen shot of your work.

Complete Section 3 of your Portfolio and submit it to your assessor.

4.Build and configure the server/s

You are now required to install the network operating system according to client
requirements and the installation checklists you have created as part of your Server
Design Report.

You are to complete the following activities:

• Creating relevant number and size of disk partitions required for the installation.

• Creating file systems and virtual memory relevant to the operating system.

• Installing the network operating system.

• Installing and configuring server applications and network services as per the
client requirements and sever design.

• Installing any additional tools or third party software as per the client
requirements and the server design.

Once you have completed this you are to reconnect and reconfigure the connectivity
devices (such as switches, routers, etc).

You are then to patch the network operating systems and associated applications to
ensure any vulnerabilities are secured as well as ensuring that functionality and usability is
of optimal performance.

Take screen shots of each of the above phases plus written commentary on how you
undertook each stage.

Work on Section 4 of your Portfolio.

5.Configure and administer the server

Now that you have installed the server for the network operating system, you are to
configure and administer the server.

You are to complete the configuration and administration following the manufacturer’s
instructions for such.

 You are to complete all of the following activities:

 Configure the:

o Domain name system (DNS)

o Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)

o Web and proxy mail

o File transfer protocol (FTP)

o Firewall.

 Configure the network directory service and then perform a restart.

 Create accounts for user groups to ensure security, as well as network access.

 Manage accounts by grouping users and allocating access to resources.

 Configure the user environment using the relevant network operating

system policies and scripts

 Create a directory structure and quotas to meet client requirements as discussed

at the meeting

 Configure print services and check to see they are correctly configured for
printing.

 Set the security, access and sharing of system resources to meet

client requirements.

 In addition to the above and to finalise the installation process you are to:

 Implement the security policy as discussed at the meeting with the client
to prevent unauthorised access to the system.

 Configure update services so as to provide automatic updates for operating

system and applications.

Finally restore the local data to the new server. Once this has occurred, complete a
backup to ensure that the data has been copied and not corrupted or unknown
alterations such as file permissions not carried across.

Implement backup and recovery methods so that restoration of data is possible in the
event of a disaster.

Take screen shots of each of the above phases plus written commentary on how you
undertook each stage.

6.Test and monitor the server

Now that you have completed server configuration and administration, you are to conduct
testing in order to monitor the performance of the server.

Complete the testing as per the test plan you developed as part of the Server Design Report.

Record the results.

As you complete the testing, review the test results to identify errors. Take screen shots of your
work.

Assess all of the problems identified in the test report and fix according to manufacturer’s
trouble shooting instructions.

If you do not encounter any errors, your assessor will set at least two up for you to fix.

Following this, you are then to re-test and validate changes to make sure they have not
affected the initial specifications.

Submit your completed Test Plan to your assessor, as well as all of the associated screen shots.

Complete Section 5 of your Portfolio and submit it to your assessor.

7.Finalise server installation and management

Now that you have completed server configuration and administration and initial testing, you
are to monitor the performance of the server.

You are to:

 Save the server configurations and settings for the client to keep as a reference and
document any differences to standard configurations and settings are documented.

 Save a current report of the server status to provide to the client.

You are also required to conduct a physical walk through of the site which your assessor will
observe. You are to check:

o For cleanliness - make sure no boxes or unwanted material or equipment has been
left

o Power/points - turned on or switched off according to client requirements

o Cabling - is safely put away

o Mounting - is stable

o Protections - have been put in place such as UPS or safety instructions left.

o Placement - of additional access points for monitoring and sniffing.

You are also to request client approval and sign off and including the server documentation
as above.

Complete Section 6 of your Portfolio and submit it to your assessor.

8.Submit your completed Project Portfolio

Make sure you have completed all sections of your Project Portfolio, answered all questions,
provided enough detail as indicated and proofread for spelling and grammar as necessary.

Submit to your assessor for marking.
