Why Vitamins?

A British scientist in 1906 showed that certain foods

contain substances important for growth and development of
the body. In time, these substances were called vitamins,
meaning “essential to life”. Today, there are thirteen known
vitamins. The human body only produces three of them.

The body needs vitamins. Vitamins regulate the way the

body changes food into energy and living tissues. Each vitamin
has specific use and lack of one vitamin can interfere with the
function of another. The continued lack of one vitamin can
cause a vitamin deficiency or disease. Lack of vitamin A for
example can cause poor eyesight.

There are different sources of vitamins. The best way for a

healthy person to get vitamins is to eat a balanced diet. Eggs,
milk, meat, vegetables, fruits and whole grain cereals are the
most common sources of the necessary vitamins.

Vitamins are essential to life. Vitamins help to speed up

certain chemical reactions in the body. These reactions are
essential for health. Without vitamins, these reactions would
occur very slowly or not at all.

Read the paragraph. Identify the main idea, key sentence and
supporting details.

There are three kinds of bees in a colony. There is an

egg-laying female or queen. She lays fertilized eggs. Each
hatches into a worker. She also lays unfertilized eggs. An
unfertilized egg hatches into a drone. The queen lays each egg
in a cell. After an egg is hatched, the larva is fed by workers
called nurses. The larva is given a jelly like food. The nurses
secrete this food from their mouth.

The body parts of bees are very important. An adult

honeybee has four wings. It has two antennae. It has mouth
parts for sucking and chewing. Workers have stings for defense
and offense. The queen has small sting. The drone has none. If
a worker bee stings an enemy, the bee soon dies. This happens
because the sting and other parts of its body are pulled out.

School Uniforms

School uniforms are good for the development of children.
First of all, everyone is dressed unified. So no one has "better"
clothes than others and no one can threaten others only
because of their clothes. In many schools ganging up on others
because of what they are wearing is already normal and
uniforms are a way to protect the children from such acts.
School uniforms also keep everyone from having to buy
expensive brands of clothes to be part of the society, which
relieves especially the parents and takes the pressure of being
"cool" away from the children. School uniforms also helps to
put off children being overly concerned about keeping up with
the latest fashions. This gives young children more time to
concentrate on more important developmental things. Of
course, there are also critics, who say that school uniforms
make the children lose their own individuality but in general it
is possible to say, that school uniforms have a good influence
on most children.

1. Based from the text, what are the advantages of wearing

school uniforms?
2. What do critics say about wearing school uniforms? Do
you agree? Why?
3. What is your stand regarding wearing of school uniform?

Appendix 5
Q2 / W3 / D1 / G6

Read the following passage and answer the questions that

follow.
Chess

Chess is called the game of kings. It has been around for a

long time. People have been playing it for over 500 years.
Chess is based on an even older game from India. The chess we
play today is from Europe.
Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the white
pieces. The other uses the black pieces. Each piece moves in a
special way. One piece is called the king. Each player has one.
The players take turns moving their pieces. If a player lands on
a piece, he or she takes it. The game ends when a player loses
his or her king. There are a few more rules, but those are the
basics.
Some people think that chess is more than a game. They
think that it makes the mind stronger. Good chess players use
their brains. They take their time. They think about what will
happen next. These skills are useful in life and in chess. Chess
is kind of like a work out for the mind.
You don't always have lots of time to think when playing
chess. There is a type of chess with short time limits. It's called
blitz chess. In blitz chess, each player gets ten minutes to use
for the whole game. Your clock runs during your turn. You hit
the time
clock after your move. This stops your clock. It also starts the
other player's clock. If you run out of time, you lose. Games of
blitz chess are fast-paced.
Chess is not just for people. Computers have been playing
chess since the 1970s. At first they did not play well. They
made mistakes. As time went on they grew stronger. In 1997, a
computer beat the best player in the world for the first time. It
was a computer called Deep Blue. Deep Blue was big. It took up
a whole room. By 2006 a cell phone could beat the best players
in the world. Chess sure has come a long way.
Don't you think so?

Technology and Science

Almost every day, we hear or read that there are new
advances and development in the field of science and
technology. These discoveries are very important to all of us.
The conveniences brought about by advances in
communication like the telephone, the cellular phone, the
radio, the television, the computer and other communication
gadgets and equipment together with the advances in
transportation like the airplane, the jet plane and even
spaceships, have made the world seem much smaller because
of the speed in both communication and transportation.
Science and Technology have also made life more
comfortable and satisfying. We know the convenience of having
electricity and water so easily available in our homes. Surely,

we enjoy the convenient usefulness of other pushbutton
appliances.
Technology and Science have greatly improved the
methods and equipment used in medicine, agriculture,
industries, transportation and communication. Indeed, men
from all walks of life have benefited much from these
technological advancements.

The Respiratory System

Human needs the oxygen in the air they breathe. Oxygen

is needed to burn the food they take in. The energy is released
when food is burned. Energy is used by the cells of the body to
their work. Carbon dioxide is a waste product released by the
body when cells use energy.
How do cells of your body get a constant supply of oxygen
and regularly remove carbon dioxide? This is done by inhaling
and exhaling air. This process is called breathing. The sacs that
work together to help you breathe is called the respiratory
system. When you breathe in, air is drawn into the lungs
through the respiratory passages. The gaseous exchange
occurs in the lungs. Oxygen diffuses into the blood for the cells
to use. Carbon dioxide is then released by the body.

buy them because they are delicious.
Others go for food with attractive levels. Still, others buy
food because these are well-advertised on television. These are
often announced over the radio. These are the people who

balls, candies and hot dogs don’t contain nutrients. Soft drinks
don’t contain nutrients either. Moreover, they contain food
coloring which is harmful to the body. Hence, these are called
