Wind Load Calculations - Cherry Grove Park revised.doc Page 2

Design Criteria

The following design criteria was utilized in these calculations:

1) Ultimate Design wind speed of 180 Miles Per Hour (MPH) for structures. Ultimate
wind speed of 180 MPH is equivalent to 140 MPH normal design wind speed
according to 2023 Florida Building Code 8th Edition equation 16-17. However,
Section 1620.2 requires a minimum wind speed of 165 MPH.
2) Formula for pressure developed by the wind, P=.00256(V)^2*(H/33)^0.29
Where:
P = pressure in pounds per square foot
V = wind speed in miles per hour
H= height in feet above the ground surface (less than 19 feet)
3) All of the Play Equipment Structure will be less than 19 feet in height.
4) All concrete shall be 3000-PSI minimum.
5) Geneeral existing soil conditions include sand, silt and traces of rock. These
conditions are adequate to support a design load of 1500 PSF. Also see Soils report
from Ardaman and Associates dated June 16, 2023. Soil Bearing Pressure 1500 PSF
6) Calculations were done by analyzing the worst case wind direction for each set of
equipment.
7) Calculations were prepared in accordance to the 2023 Florida Building Code 8th
Edition.

Wind Design Data

1. Ultimate Design Wind Speed (MPH): 180

2. Normal Wind Design speed (MPH) : 165
3. Occupancy category - Playground

5. Wind Exposure Category: C
6. Internal pressure coefficient - NA (Open structure)
7. Enclosure Classification: Open
8. Components and Cladding (PSF): 48.0 to -48.0

Design Method

For this Play Equipment, we will analysis two (2) wind loading conditions. The first is
uplift (Vertical wind loading) and second is overturning (horizontal wind loading).

Vertical Wind Loading

In this condition we will compare the uplifting forces to the total pullout resistance of the
foundation. The total uplifting force is equal to the wind pressure times the area in
vertical direction. The total pullout resistance of the foundation is equal to the weight of
the foundation plus the pullout resistance of the foundation from the adjoining soil. The
weight of the foundation is equal to the volume of each support post’s concrete footer,
times the density of concrete, times the number of support posts. The total pullout
resistance of the foundation divided by the uplifting wind force is equal to the factor of
safety. See Exhibit “A”. The weight of the equipment was not included in our
calculations. If the weight of the equipment was factored in, the factor of safety would be
increased.

Horizontal Wind Loading

In this condition, we will compare the lateral forces acting on the Equipment to ensure
that the structure does not overturn. This is accomplished by summing all of the forces
acting on the structure about a single point “M”. The sum of the forces about “M” from
the weight of the structure, divided by the sum of the forces about “M” from the wind
loading will equal the factor of safety. See Exhibit “B”.

Wind Load Pressures

P=.00256(165)^2*(9/33)^0.29
=.00256(27,225)*(.69)
= 47.82

For design purposes of this project, we will use a pressure of 48.0 pounds per square foot.

This form is intended to assist the evaluation of accessibility for outdoor play facilities. This form does not represent all factors required for an accessible play facility contained in the regulations,
and therefore is not a guarantee, test, or confirmation of accessibility. Requirements for accessibility include appropriate accessible routes, maneuvering spaces and clear floor and ground
spaces. Play components must include appropriate transfer heights and/or be accessed by ramp where appropriate. Providing and maintaining accessibility is the responsibility of the Play Facility
Owner.
ADA Evaluation

With the introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 and the subsequent adoption
of standards specific to play areas, accessibility has become an important issue to everyone.

Below is a chart evaluating the play area for your proposed playground. This evaluation assumes that
proper resilient surfacing within the play site and an accessible route of travel to the play area and
equipment are a part of this proposal package. Also, that no other play equipment is in the site.

This play area meets current ADA requirements.
