Course Overview:

The course will enable the student to learn and gain knowledge of the altered physiology mechanisms
and their impact on the body and also enhance the ability to contribute to advancements in health care,
improve patient outcomes and foster innovation in medical research and practice.

Course Objectives

1. Understanding basic concepts in medical biochemistry.


2. Apply biochemical principles in interpretation of biochemical and functional test in order to
develop diagnostic techniques.
3. Understand biochemical basis of nutrition including metabolism of macromolecules and the role
of vitamins and minerals in health.
4. Analyse body fluids for diagnosing and managing adverse pathological processes.
5. Understand the chemistry and functions of hormones.

Expected learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, the student should be able to;

1. Define biochemistry and outline the structure and properties of bio molecules.
2. Explain biochemical perspective to health care.
3. Describe the biochemical parameters in body fluid and changes related to disease.
4. Explain the basic concept of metabolism.
5. Describe the chemistry and functions of hormones.
6. Explain the application of urinalysis and renal function test, gastric, and sliver function tests.

Introduction to biochemistry.

Definition of terms in medical biochemistry.

Structure properties and functions of proteins.

Week 2:

Structure, properties and functions of lipids.

Structure, properties and functions of carbohydrate.


Structure, properties and functions of nucleic acid.

Structure, properties and functions of nuclear proteins.

Structure, properties and functions of vitamins and micro nutrients.

Week 4-5:

Metabolism of high energy phosphate compounds.

Metabolism of carbohydrates.

Metabolism of glycogen.

Metabolism of lipid.

Inborn error metabolism.

Week 6-7

Biochemistry of specialized tissues; Brain, Liver, Erythrocyte, Muscles, Adipose.

Week 8-9

A review of body fluids;
