QUESTION1:CLUTCHES

A centrifugal clutch is designed to tran ·t wer of 35 kW at a maximum operating

speed of 90~ r/min. The clutch startss~ ~~gage at 70% of the _op~rati~g speed.

It operates using four shoes, making a fri t' oefficient of 0,35. The inside diameter of
the dr~r:r, is 330 mm, and the radius of thi ~~~t~e of gravity is 135 mm from the centre of
the driving shaft.

Calculate the mass of each shoe. [9]

QUESTION 2: BRAKES
A band and block brake shown in FIGURE 1 DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached) having
14 blocks, each of which subtends an angle 0 ~ the same shaft, has a mass of 2 000 kg
and a combined radius of gyration of 500 mm. The two ends of the band are attached to
pins on opposite sides of the brake lever at distances of 30 mm and 120 mm from the
fulcrum. The force of 200 N is applied at a distance of 750 mm from the fulcrum.

Calculate the following:

2.1 The maximum braking torque (9)

2.2 The angular retardation of the drum (2)

[11]

QUESTION 3: LINE SHAFTS

The line shaft shown in FIGURE 2, DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached), is supported by two

bearings with centre lines 1100 mm apart. The driving gear is driven by a 30 kW electric
motor at 1 600 r/min keyed to the shaft at 700 mm to the right of the left-hand bearing.
The gear ratio is 4: 1. A pulley with a diameter of 600 mm is keyed to the right-hand end
of the shaft, 250 mm to the right of the right-hand bearing. This pulley drives a machine
by means of a belt drive. The flat belt has a tension ratio of 3:1. A flywheel with a mass
of 240 kg is keyed at a distance of 300 mm to the right of the left-handed bearing.

QUESTION 5: RAIL TRACTION AND VEHICLE DYNAMICS

5.1 The following data is available for a vehicle:

Height up to centre of qravity 930mm

Track width
1,7 m
Coefficient of friction 0,67
Radius
90m
Banking angle
25°

If the rails are banked, calculate the maximum speed:

5.1.1 Without skidding in km/h (3)

5.1.2 Without overturning in km/h (3)

5.2 A locomotive travels around an unbanked curve with a radius of 100 mm at a

constant speed of 72 km/h and is just on the point of skidding.

QUESTION 6: DYNAMIC BALANCING

FIGURE 3 on DIAGRAM SHEET 2 (attached) shows a rotating shaft which carries four
masses A, B, C and D rigidly attached to it. The radii are 100 mm, 125 mm, 200 mm and
150 mm respectively. The planes in which the masses revolve are spaced 600 mm apart
and the mass of B, C and D are 10 kg, 5 kg, and 4 kg respectively.

6.1 Choose plane A as the reference plane, compile the required table using the
given data and draw a couple polygon to scale 5 mm = 0.1 kg.m2
(7)
6.2 Draw a force diagram using a scale of 5 mm = 0, 1 kg.m.
(4)
6.3 Calculate the minimum value of mass A.
(2)
6.4 Indicate the relative angular positions of the centre of the masses c and D to
ensure complete dynamic balance for the rotating shaft relative to mass B.
