Socialist Workers’ party (Nazi Party). By 1921 he was its leader. He gave the party a new
identity by creating the Swastika as its symbol. He created his own army called the
Stormabteilung (SA). The SA organized massive parades, dressed in brown uniforms and
carried the flags with the Swastika on it. Their motto was ‘All opposition must be stamped
into the ground’.

In November 1923, Hitler believed that the Nazi Party was strong enough to overthrow
the Weimar Republic. He organized a Munich Putsch where the SA tried to seize power.
The Putsch was easily crashed by the army and police. Hitler was arrested and

The nuclear weapons changed the nature of the conflict in the 20th century. The first area
of competition was arms race. Arms refer to weapons. In the 1950s, the USA believed
that the USSR had more nuclear missiles than it did. As a result the USA took the
following steps: It strengthened its armed forces; and it built up a massive supply of
missiles. The USSR responded by: It built more missiles; and it developed the anti-
ballistic missiles (ABM)

The next area of conflict competition was space. Much of the horror of the USA, the USSR
took the lead in the space race. The Soviet achievements on space included: the
launched of the first ever space satellite called Sputnik, Laika, a dog, was sent into space
aboard Sputnik II and Cosmonaut was the first man sent into space. Cosmonaut is a
Russian term for people who travel into space. The USA worked around the clock to equal
Soviet space technology and in 1962, astronaut John Glenn was the first American to go
into space and orbit the moon. The USA was determined to be the first to send a man to
the moon. They were successful when Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on
