My philosophy of teaching is that everyone deserves the right to learn in a safe and

welcoming environment. My philosophy of teaching stems from my interest in teaching special

education. As history has shown, individuals with special needs have a history of being treated
unfairly in the education realm or simply not even being allowed to receive an education. As a
future educator this hurts my heart because I feel education is a right every individual should
have which brings us back to the background of my philosophy of education.

Classroom management and discipline are the foundations of a classroom. Keeping a

classroom running smoothly requires a set of specified rules that display expectations of the
students. Rules should be introduced to students upon the first day of classes to become aware of
expectations early. Rules should be equally enforced by the instructor to keep discipline in the
classroom and assure students are aware of what is expected of them. Discipline is the only way
students will become accustomed to rules and by teachers enforcing class rules they are creating
disciplined students. The goals of discipline and classroom management are goals that extend
outside the classroom. Students learn respect through classroom management because most rules
are centered around the respectful treatment of others it becomes second nature in the classroom
and by default outside it too. Discipline builds character and helps students learn to properly
handle constructive criticism. By enforcing class rules instructors inform students on
expectations that are likely to follow them within their years in school.

I have a specific style in which I want to have my classroom arranged. I would like to
have enough space in my classroom for a silent reading area for students to enjoy when they
finish an assignment early or need a small break in between lessons. I will have a table or shelf
near the entrance of the classroom which will have three bins on it. One bin will be for
completed homework assignments, one will be for handouts students will pick up upon entrance,
and the last bin will be used for students to turn in in-class activities and handouts upon exiting
the classroom. I will set up desks or tables in my classroom into a square with one missing side.
This seating set up allows students to feel more comfortable in discussions and debates, it will
also help in instruction by having me the instructor at the center when lessons are being taught.
This seating allows me to be able to always view all my students and assist when needed while
not forgetting any students. My daily schedule will always be presented on the board when
students enter my classroom. Students will be made aware of classroom routine on the first day
of class and it will be displayed in the classroom as a reminder, but students will be expected to
turn in homework assignments and pick up class handouts when entering the classroom. Much
like the routine and schedule, the procedures will be displayed in the classroom and will be made
available to my students on the first day. Procedures are that students pick up handouts, turn in
homework upon entrance, arrive to their desk and begin working on the first part of the handout.
Handouts will consist of anchor activities for students so in between lessons and activities
students will have the opportunity to complete the sheet based on current lesson topics.
The rules I have for my classroom are as follows; treat everyone with respect, if the
teacher or a peer is speaking you shouldn’t be, no phone use during lessons, keep language and
conversations school appropriate, and if there are any issues speak with me first. I will introduce
students to classroom rules on the first day and expect to implement them immediately. I will
consistently enforce classroom rules as needed to help implement them. I intend to redirect
behavior through identifying what behavior is wrong or inappropriate and redirecting students
back to current lessons or activities. I will allow students warnings two exactly and upon the
third time I will introduce some kind of negative reinforcement. My reinforcements will consist
of silent lunches, parent conferences and referrals based on the severity of a behavior.

I will utilize incentives such as prizes like candy and small fidget toys for students. I will
also offer rest time; students will have the opportunity to earn time in the class relaxation zone
instead of completing an activity in class. I will implement student accountability by assigning
homework and requiring students to have it ready to turn in upon entering the classroom. By
enforcing class rules positively and negatively as needed I am building accountability in my
students.

My home-school communication philosophy and plan is as follows. I expect that parents

are available to at the very least sign permission slips and low graded assignments to stay
involved. I understand that sometimes there is a disconnect at home, education isn’t important in
every home, and we do not have the true ability to make it so as instructors. I would like to have
my students fill out activity sheets that inform me of their background which will give me the
opportunity to research the various culture practices in my class and attempt to apply them to my
lesson plans and keep them in mind when planning for discipline and classroom norms.
Relationships will be built in my classroom through group and partner activities that require
students to actively work together. I will continuously display affirmations amongst my room to
make students understand their importance in this world and the importance of education. I will
make my students aware of career paths base on education and express the way certain lifestyles
require certain socio-economic status.
