SHEET (1)

1. A 3-kg plastic tank that has a volume of 0.2 m3 is filled with liquid water. Assuming the density of
water is 1000 kg/m3, determine the weight of the combined system.

2. Complete the following table:

T (°C) T (°F) T (K) T (R)
−459.67
32
300
20
760

3. A tank has two rooms separated by a membrane. Room A has 1 kg of air and a volume of 0.5 m3;
room B has 0.75 m3 of air with density 0.8 kg/m3. The membrane is broken, and the air comes to a
uniform state. Find the final density of the air.

4. The gage pressure in a liquid at a depth of 3 m is read to be 42 kPa. Determine the gage pressure in
the same liquid at a depth of 9 m.

5. The vacuum pressure of a condenser is given to be 80 kPa. If the atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa,
what is the gage pressure and absolute pressure in kPa, kN/m2, and mmHg.

6. Convert the following readings of pressure to kPa assuming that barometer reads 760 mm of Hg.
Take ρHg = 13600 kg/m3.
(a) 80 cm of Hg, (b) 30 cm Hg vacuum, (c) 1.35 m H2O gage, (d) 4.2 bar.

7. On a piston of 10 cm diameter a force of 1000 N is uniformly applied. Find the pressure on the
piston.

8. A tube contains an oil of specific gravity 0.9 to a depth of 120 cm. Find the gage pressure at this
depth in kPa.

9. A vessel of cylindrical shape is 50 cm in diameter and 75 cm high. It contains 4 kg of a gas. The
pressure measured with manometer indicates 620 mm of Hg above atmosphere when barometer
reads 760 mm of Hg. Determine:
(a) The absolute pressure of the gas in the vessel in bar,
(b) Specific volume and density of the gas.

10. A valve in the cylinder shown in Figure has a cross-sectional area of 11 cm2 with a pressure of 735
kPa inside the cylinder and 99 kPa outside. How large a force is needed to open the valve?

11. A vacuum gage connected to a chamber reads 35 kPa at a location where the atmospheric pressure
is 92 kPa. Determine the absolute pressure in the chamber.

12. The lower half of a 6-m-high cylindrical container is filled with water (ρ = 1000 kg/m3) and the
upper half with oil that has a specific gravity of 0.85. Determine the pressure difference between the
top and bottom of the cylinder.

2
13. Both a gage and a manometer are attached to a gas tank to measure its pressure. If the reading on the
pressure gage is 80 kPa, determine the distance between the two fluid levels of the manometer if the
fluid is (a) mercury (ρ = 13600 kg/m3) or (b) water (ρ = 1000 kg/m3).

14. A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston cylinder device. The piston has a mass of 3.2 kg
and a cross-sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring above the piston exerts a force of 150 N
on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure inside the cylinder.

15. Consider a double-fluid manometer attached to an air pipe shown in figure. If the specific gravity of
one fluid is 13.55, determine the specific gravity of the other fluid for the indicated absolute pressure
of air. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa.
