FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF HERBAL FACE SERUM

ABSTRACT
In the present study, people need cure for various skin problems without side effects. Natural remedies are
more acceptable in the belief that they are safer with fewer side effects than the synthetic ones. Herbal
ingredients opened the way to formulate cosmetics without any harmful effect. Herbal face serum are
considered as sustaining and productive way to advance the appearance of skin. Thus in the present work,
Herbal formulations have growing demand in the world market. Herbal face serum are used to stimulate blood
circulation, rejuvenate the muscles and help to maintain the elasticity of the skin and remove dirt from skin
pores. It is a our good attempt to formulate the herbal face serum containing natural herbal ingredients such as
pomagrate Peel Powder, Lemon peel Powder, rose water Aloe Vera. After evaluation, we found good properties
for the face serum., free from skin irritation and maintained its consistency even after stability storage
conditions. It has been revealed that herbal face serum having enough potential to give efficient crystal clear,
Healthy and glowing effect on skin. The overall study is useful to substantiate. product claims due its useful
benefits on the human beings.

I. INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, human life often avoiding exposure to sunlight and pollution from the environment, including eating
foods that are unhealthy, these factors are the main factors that stimulate the cells of the body to produce more
free radicals. The free radicals will form when exposed to sunlight the most and free radicals that accumulate in
the body can cause negative effects on the skin as well such as dull skin uneven skin tone Dark spots, freckles
rough skin, not smooth, etc., therefore, is an important factor that makes people turn to take care of more
healthy skin, including the use of products, creams, lotions or serums to help slow down the changes that occur
to the skin, slow down wrinkles. A good skin Serum may provide your skin a firmer, smoother texture, make
pores appear smaller and increase moisture levels. Texture is all about skin type- but the brilliant ingredients
for healthy skin the same for everyone, regardless of product, texture or personal preference. These products
are useful in various skin conditions like psoriasis, shingles and other associated with itching, in addition- cuts,
abrasions and burns are said to be benefit from topically applying the leaf’s gel to the affected area. Aloe Vera
extract have antibacterial and anti-fungal activities, which may help in the treatment of minor skin infections
also. The body’s largest and vital organ, the skin is steadily working to recover and maintain itself. The
outermost layer of the skin is epidermis and innermost is dermis. Over several reasons, including UV radiation
and pollutants, dry patches of skin can periodically form. Overnight wear of makeup can also irritate or trigger
an allergic reaction. skin care protecting cosmetic are available all over the world in many spectrums such as
gel, sunscreen lotion, face cleanser, skin serum, anti-pigmentation creams. In that a serum is a skin care
product with a gel, light lotion, or hydrating consistency that can penetrate the skin more deeply to deliver
active ingredients. A highly concentrated product based on water and oil is a cosmetic serum. It has an
extremely high concentration of an active ingredient. Serum gives your skin a smoother, denser texture,
decreases pore generation, moisturizes deeply, prevents wrinkles, and acts as an anti-aging skin product. Many
more natural herbs advised by Ayurveda for a variety of skin problems. Aloe vera, Citric Fruits, Glycerin, Rose
water, , containing face serum is highly concentrated cosmetic product. The antibacterial and antifungal
properties of aloe vera extract help in the treatment of mild skin problem.
Serum is a concentrated product used in Cosmetology. Face serums are lightweight formulations that contain
active ingredients and can be applied to your skin directly.
They are usually clear, gel-based or liquid, and less thicker than moisturizers.
Serums are designed to hydrate, protect, and nourish your skin and weed out several skin as:

In general, face serums fall into the following categories:
 Anti-aging serums

II. METHODOLOGY

Composition of Herbal Face Serum:

Procedure:
This Ingredients used in Herbal Face Serum
 To measure 100ml Rose Water.
 Then to add 15gm lemon Peel Powder & 15gm pomegranate Peel Powder.
 To properly mix.
 Then Set mixture 30 mint.
 After 30 mint ,To filtered mixture.
 To added 15ml glycerine.
 Properly mix it.
 To added aloe vera gel.
 To properly mix .
 To fill empty pump bottle.
 Then store at 30 mint refrigerator.
Evaluation Test:
1) Organoleptic Evaluation
It refers to the evaluation of the herbal face pack by its color, odor,texture etc.
2) Physicochemical evaluation
Physicochemical parameters were determined, including the determination of Ash Value, pH.

a) Total Ash Value:
 Weigh accurately about 3gms of the powdered drug in a tared silica crucible.
 Heat at 450°C until free from carbon.
 Cool and weigh.
Formula:
b) Acid Insoluble Ash:

 Total Ash
 Add10 mL 3N HCL and boil for 5 mins
 Filter through ashless filter paper
 Ignite at 450 C°
 Cool and weigh

c) Water Insoluble Ash:

 Total Ash
 Add10ml. water nas boil for 5 mins
 Filter through ashless filter paper
 Ignite at 450
 Cool and weigh

3) Irritancy test
Mark an area (1sq.cm) on the left-hand dorsal surface. Definite quantities of prepared face serum were applied
to the specified area and time was noted. Irritancy,was checked if any for regular intervals up to 24 hrs. and
reported
4) Stability studies :
Stability testing of prepared formulation was conducted by storing at different temperature conditions for the
period of one month. The packed glass vials of formulation stored at different temperature conditions like,
room temperature and 400C and were evaluated for physical parameters like color, odour, pH, consistency and
feel.

5) Microbial Test
 Firstly, take a clean conical flask. (Generally, if you are preparing 100 ml of nutrient agar, then you should
use a 500 ml conical flask you are preparing a 1000 ml nutrient agar, then you should take a 2000 ml conical
flask.)
 Weigh the peptone, beef extract, NaCl, agar as per above table and add these weighed ingredients to the
conical flask.
 Pour 500 ml of distilled water into the flask.
 Gently agitate and mix the contents well. Heat if it is necessary so as to dissolve the ingredients.
 Now add the remaining 500 ml distilled water and shake well to make homogenous mixture.
 Now check the pH of the broth. Adjust the pH to 7.2 ± 0.2. In case you observe the pH change, then you can
adjust accordingly by adding 1N HCL or 1N NaOH.
 Now you can either pour this broth into test tubes or keep as it is in the conical flask.
 Cover the conical flask or test tube mouth with a cotton plug and wrap a paper on it.
 Keep the flask with broth in autoclave and autoclave at 121 o C at 15 psi pressure for 15 minutes.
 Lastly, after autoclave let the flask with nutrient broth to cool completely.
 Store this sterile nutrient agar medium at cool temperature in clean dust free environment.
 Before use, always open the flask for inoculation only inside the laminar in order to avoid contamination.
6] Viscosity:
Viscosity is a critical parameter for topical formulation. Topical solutions with low viscosity have faster
clearance than viscous solutions. In addition, highly viscous solutions can have an undesirable effect on the
skin. Viscosity of the Face Serum was found to be 1237.5 CP
7] Spreadability:
Spreadibility denotes the extent of area to which the gel readily spreads on application to skin or the affected
part. The bioavailability efficiency of a cream also depends on its spreading value.
III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Organoleptic Evaluation
Herbal face serum was evaluated for Organoleptic parameters showed in the table. The colour of formulation
was Brown. The odour of prepared formulations was pleasant and good acceptable which is desirable to
cosmetic formulations. Texture and smoothness was acceptable as per requirement of cosmetic formulations.

Herbal face serum was evaluated for physicochemical parameters showed in the Table . The pH of formulation
was found close to neutral. The ash content limit.

This formulation is used for only external surface. the prepared formulation is showing the absence of
irritation, redness and swelling during irritancy studies.

Stability Studies:
The prepared formulation is required testing of stability by storing at different temperature conditions for the
period of one month, temperature conditions like, room temperature and 40˚C and were evaluated for physical
parameters like colour, odour, consistency etc.

IV. CONCLUSION
The aim of the study was to formulate different herbals into a serum for moisturizing and glowing activity on
skin. Cosmeceuticals are skin-care products that cater for both cosmetics and drugs.In this serum aloe Vera was
used. The fresh aloe Vera gel from the inner central part (parenchyma) of the leaf often has a very good action
in acne, pimples, eczema and other skin problems, burns due to heat , sun exposure and in treatment of
radiation dermatitis. Lemon peels are thought to contain plenty of bioactive compounds. They have excellent
nutritional value, with a fair amount of vitamin C, fibre, calcium, potassium, D-limonene, and magnesium
polyphenols and dietary fiber in pomegranate peels prevent cardiovascular disease by lowering serum total
cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and lipid peroxidation levels. Pomegranate peels may protect against UVB rays
and improve hyperpigmentation, acne, signs of aging, and wound healing. Glycerin is great for the skin because
it acts as a humectant. It’s also an emollient. Aloe Vera contains number of vitamins and minerals that have a

strong moisturizing capacity and anti-aging effects to maintain healthy and fresh looking skin. The gel
stimulates cell growth and as such enhances the restoring of damaged skin. So this serum can be used treat
skin related problems
