Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
PASSAGE 1
In the future, cities may see flying vehicles, mega bridges, and underground space. Those cities will be
controlled by the Internet and the development of technologies. Technology will also be used to create a new
quality of life in well-planned developments.
Transportation through tunnels will be more popular. Technology is much faster and cheaper today, so
the city of the future will see more solutions, such as an underground network of tunnels that could ship 600
million packages a year. Some cities are developing the above-ground tunnel travel system in which
passengers and cargo could be transported in shorter time.
The bridge of the future will do more than connect two points. An exciting example is that a skybridge
will offer everything from pedestrian and bike lanes as well as services for people on it. Future cities will see
skybridges as a large area with houses, offices, and restaurants.
The streets of the future city are smart. One good example is streetlights that react to what's going on
around them. For example, if a crowd is leaving a stadium at night, the lamps may brighten to light the way
or even warn a nearby ambulance.

PASSAGE 2
The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children, may be more an American ideal
than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more varied than
we had been led to believe, reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among
American groups.
The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one third of all current American families
fit the traditional mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no children or have
none still living at home. Of the final one, about 20 percent of the total number of American households are
single people, usually women over sixty-five years old. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total,
consists of unmarried people who choose to live together, and the rest, about 7 percent, are single, usually
divorced parents, with at least one child. Today, these varied family types are typical, and therefore, normal.
Apparently, many Americans are achieving supportive relationships in family forms other than the traditional
one.

A. The traditional American family. B. The nuclear family.
C. The current American family. D. The ideal family
2. The author implies that_______

C. 7 percent of households. D. 3 percent of households.
5. Who generally constitutes a one-person household?
A. single man in his twenties. B. An elderly man.
C. A single woman in her late sixties. D. A divorced woman

PASSAGE 3
We may not be driving around in hover cars or eating tablets instead of tasty food, but in 10 years' time
some things will be very different. The four - day working week will certainly be a reality, so we'll have a
lot more time for leisure activities. But what else will be different?
If you ask a hundred people to look into the future, you will probably get a hundred answers. But two
major themes seem to emerge from almost every prediction made. The first is variety in every aspect of
our lives. We'll probably be living in what futurologists have called a 'multi - option society'. You may be
married with 2.2 children, but this won't be the norm any more. It will simply be one of a number of
choices, along with living in groups and living alone. The other huge influence on our lives will be micro
technology - computers and telecommunications. Take work, for instance, factories will be run largely by
robots, so they'll be cleaner places for the few people who work in them. Offices, too, will go electronic
with the result that paper will almost completely disappear. More people will work from home at
computers linked to a head office. Their homes may even be turned into 'electronic cottages', with Mum,
Dad and even the children all sharing one or maybe two jobs.
1. In 10 years' time, it will probably true that ______.
A. people will work longer hours B. people will enjoy more new forms of entertainment
C. there will be no tasty food D. the weekends will be longer
2. It can be inferred from the text that ______.
A. a hundred people were asked for opinions about the future
B. a hundred people surveyed answered differently about the future
C. different people tend to have different opinions
D. people are optimistic about the future
3. The word "emerge" in paragraph 3 is closet in meaning to ______.
A. disappear B. discuss C. evolve D. come up
4. What is true of a "multi-option society"?
A. You will have to live alone if not married
B. It will be the norm to get married and have children
C. You may choose to live with other people in groups
D. You will be allowed to have no more than 2.2 children
5. What can be inferred about changes in the workplace?
A. More people will work from home instead of traveling to the workplace
B. Robots will replace all human beings in factories
C. People's home will go electronic and be turned in to offices
D. Paper will no longer exist in offices

PASSAGE 1
THE STORY OF COCA-COLA
Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by John Pemberton, a druggist living in Atlanta. The original drink
was a type of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton
sold it as a medicine; and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have made people feel good!

11
Nevertheless, Pemberton’s medicine was not very successful, so he sold his secret formula to another
druggist, Asa Candler. Candler was interested, because he had another idea that Pemberton’s “medicine”
would be much better if it was mixed with soda. Candler was thus the man who really invented the drink
Coca-Cola. Candler also advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a
drink of Coca-Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who
wanted to sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the drink, and very quickly the men became
millionaires. The famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed in 1916. And the famous
Coca-Cola logo is the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logos, it has not
changed in 100 years!
During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe began asking for Coca-Cola, so the Coca-
Cola company began to export to Europe. It was so popular with soldiers that they then had to start bottling
the drink in Europe.
Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world, including Russia and China; it is the
world’s most popular drink.
As for the famous formula, it is probably the world’s most valuable secret! The exact ingredients for
making Coca-Cola are only known to a handful of people. And as for the “coca” that was in the original

PASSAGE 2
The average daily time spent online by adults increased by nearly an hour during the UK’s spring
lockdown when compared to the previous year, according to communications regulator Ofcom, with
numerous countries back under severe pandemic restrictions, many of us once again find ourselves
questioning whether our heavy reliance on technology is impacting our health.
It’s true that digital devices have provided new means of work, education, connection, and
entertainment during lockdown. But the perceived pressure to be online, the tendency to procrastinate to
avoid undertaking tasks, and the use of digital platforms as a way to escape stress all have the potential to
turn healthy behaviours into habits. This repetitive use can develop into addictive patterns, which can in turn
affect a user’s wellbeing.
Digital addiction refers to the addictive and excessive use of digital devices. The design of digital
platforms themselves contributes to this addictive use. Notifications, news feeds, likes and comments have
all been shown to contribute towards a battle for your attention, which leads users to increase the time they
spend looking at screens.

12
Screen time is an obvious measure of digital addiction, although researchers have noted that there is
no simple way to determine how much screen time one can experience before it becomes problematic. As
such, there is a continued lack of consensus on how we should think about and measure digital addiction.
During a global pandemic, when there often feels like no alternative to using Netflix, or video
conferencing with friends and family, screen time as an indicator of digital addiction is clearly ineffective.
Nonetheless, research conducted on preventing digital addiction does provide insights on how we can all
engage with our digital technologies in a healthier way during a lockdown.

PASSAGE 3
Since the birth of the car in 1886, transport in big cities has changed a lot. It is no wonder many
experts think that there will be extraordinary changes in the next few decades.
As technology develops, highways, skylines, subways will be all transformed. Smarter roadways
and highways in cities outfitted with loT sensors will process all kinds of data in real time and inform users
of the best transport options. Weather, crashes, traffic conditions will be communicated to users and smart
stops will be found everywhere providing renewable energy, green hydrogen or even greener energy,
ensuring efficiency and safety on every highway. Tunnels will also be a smart choice because of the
reduction of traffic congestion. Underground roads will be built in 3D with a lift system which will take
vehicles deep underground and will allow traffic to attain the greatest speed without intersections.
There will also be innovations in the sky. Air taxis are not a new idea, but in the future they will be
completely environment-friendly. Aviation gasoline will be no longer used. Green energy will be in place
and cost-effective air taxis will enable people to travel from one busy urban city to another in record time.
New technologies such as AI and the rollout of 5G will pave the way for fully autonomous innovation. Cars
will not be the only thing to go autonomous. Freight trucks, cargo vehicles, air taxis will all benefit from this
technology and that is why the term ’driver’ will become extinct.
Transport will go green. Electric or hydrogen power will be mainstream. There will still be issues to solve
such as safety, speed and cost, and of course governments will need to make new traffic laws.
