canals, knowing how to swim was essential for survival.

In ancient Japan, sports competitions that included swimming were held since 38 BC.

Who invented swimming?

The British John Trudgen (1852-1902) is considered the inventor of swimming.

Trudgen encouraged a style of lateral swimming named after him, based on techniques learned
from the Amazon Indians.

This style proves to be more effective than the old breaststroke.

Thus, at the beginning of the 19th century, swimming began to evolve as a competitive sport in
Great Britain.
