7 Measuring Connections
This chapter explains various connections which may be required for meter testing. Here the
given connection diagrams are just few examples and does not necessarily cover all types of
meters around the world.
The basic concept of meter testing is that power measurement by meter under test and the
MT36X should be comparable (same). Therefore voltages are in parallel to meter under test and
current in series. Here current measurement will be done by clamp on CT, hence no need to
disconnect the current circuit.
While testing the CT or CT/VT operated meter, pay attention if meter does include the CT and VT
ratio or not.
It is not necessary to connect the scanning head or pulse adapter K121 for viewing actual value,
vectorial display, harmonic measurement, curve display or P & W register test.
The following figures show examples for connecting the MT36X to a meter. The power for the
MT36X may be supplied through a separate socket with a protective earth conductor or from the
test voltage.
It must be ensured that the MT36X is connected to ground when the power for the
MT36X is supplied from the test voltage.
Check whether the meter output includes the conversion ratio in the meter-constant or the
register, when testing meters with measuring transformers that have a conversion ratio.

8 Software Features
This chapter explains the software functions/menus available in the MT36X to meet the various
requirements of meter testing and analysis on-site.
After switching on the MT36X and successful self-test (see chapter 4.2) the internal
software calls the “Selection” menu automatically. In this menu you can select every possible
function.
A summary of all available functions of measurement can be found in chapter 4.5. Furthermore
you can define and perform Automatic test sequences. For this function press the
Auto Measure key in the selection menu (Figure 19). See also chapter 7.3
Detailed information about the menus “Setting” and “Service” can be found in chapter 7.4. Please

8.2 Measurements
Before starting a measurement, you should select new voltage and/or current
ranges, depending on the level of the displayed voltage, resp. current.
This function is used to display all relevant and currently captured measuring data in three-phase
electrical networks. The actual measurement helps to analyze the structure of the network and
the meter installations (e.g. missing voltage, missing power, wrong polarity of the current,

This menu can be used to specify parameters for the error measurement (accuracy test).
This measurement requires that the scanning head is connected and works properly.
The M-time parameter determines the type [impulse/time] and the duration of error
measurement. When impulse is selected, the duration of the measurement is determined by
the number of rotations of the rotating disk rotations or LED impulses, if an electronic meter
is used. In this mode, the impulses from the meter or the scanning head start and stop the
error measurement.
When the M-time parameter is set to time, enter the duration of the measurement in
seconds. The measurement is then started with the first impulse from the scanning head and
stopped when the specified time has elapsed.
Please note that only measurements over a sufficient period provide conclusive
results. In case of doubt, test measurements should be performed in advance in
manual mode to ensure that the selected parameters lead to a conclusive result.
MT selection can be used to determine the impulse input. The MT36X only provides the
option TK for impulse input by the scanning head.
FB-Max can be used to determine the upper error limit for the evaluation of the measuring
results. The result of an error measurement is classified as “bad” when it is larger than this
value.
FB-Min can be used to determine the lower error limit for the evaluation of measuring
results. The result of an error measurement is classified as “bad” if it is smaller than this
value.

menu by using the keys. Confirm the selection with the Enter key.
If Imp/s is selected, the MT36X is configured to generate a fixed, specified frequency at
nominal load in the appropriate range. At half the load, half the frequency is generated.
If Cz is selected, the MT36X selects a fixed constant that is valid for all ranges. This
implies that the nominal frequency at full load is always different in the different ranges.
The respective frequency values can be read from a table after appropriate selection.
The additional function keys , , and at the right side of the screen
allow scrolling up, down, left and right.
Values in the table on a blue background, e.g. xxx = F(imp/s)<, are smaller than
the constants. Values in the table on a red background, e.g. xxx = F(imp/s)>, are
greater than the constant.

The Software Update menu can be used to update the manual control software MT3701 from
the CF memory card.
Please note that an update of the control software can only be performed when
the status "OK" is shown. The Start Update key is not visible.
Perform the updating process for the control software MT3701 as follows:
Load the new software version, which was sent by e-mail from ZERA from the external
PC through the CF card reader onto the CF memory card.
Place the CF card into the CF card interface of the MT36X.
Switch on the MT36X.
Select the Service menu and press the Software Update key.
Press the Start Update key to start the updating process and the MT36X will
automatically install the new software version. After completing the updating process,
the MT36X automatically changes to the Configuration menu. After pressing the New
Config key, the new software version is shown in the table.
The updating process is now completed and the MT36X is ready for measuring.

8.4.8 Configuration
Figure 54 Configuration
When this menu is displayed, the MT36X checks which components are present in the device.
After a successful self-test, the description of the components and the version number of the
firmware used are shown in a table.
The field "Status” shows the message “OK” when all components are evaluated as fault-free.
Press the OK key to get access to additional functions. The "Selection" menu opens (see
chapter 2.7.3).
The field “Status” shows the message “New” when some components were not recognised or
found to be faulty. In this case, the self-test must be repeated by pressing the New Config key.
This menu can in principle be used to provide internal settings for the MT36X.
Please take note that fault-free operation of any of the available functions is no
longer guaranteed when inappropriate settings are entered.
The various functions of the MT36X are no longer available through the MT3701
user interface when the Control extern key is activated.
