On June 16, 2011, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend one of the most anticipated events in the nursing profession. Several nurses showed how they valued our founder, Dean Julita V. Sotejo, as well as her contributions to the profession. That day, I had a chance to catch a glimpse of the famous Julita V. Sotejo and had an idea why she was considered Florence Nightingales Filipino counterpart. Before the start of the program, I noticed how most of the people socialize and mingle. At that moment, I realize that the JVS Lecture Series is not simply just a forum, it was a reunion of all those who recognize and try to keep Dean Sotejos legacy. One of the highlights of the program is the audiovisual presentation about Dean Sotejo. It showed her beginnings and how she paved the way to improve the profession of nursing. The Dean Sotejo I knew from pictures and stories started to have a face. Aside from this, the lecture was different and far from boring. I knew more about Nightingale and her contributions during this lecture. It made me realize that Florence Nightingale is not just a person of history, she helped change history. Another highlight of the program was the part wherein selected people were asked to react to the lecture. Aside from learning new things from the reactors, it was fun and amazing to see these people who are considered bigatin in the profession. You can
definitely see how much of their lives are dedicated to the improvement of the profession as well as their passion for it. Furthermore, the lecture allowed me to see how women can be successful in their chosen careers. For me, there were a lot of striking points made by the speaker. I was able to jot down a lot of quotations from Nightingale as well. However, I shall dwell more on my favourite. According to Ms. Nightingale, there are two types of people. Those who take the best of what there is and enjoy it and those who wish for something better and create it. I have learned that people need to be contented with what they have especially if what you have is already good. Here comes Ms. Nightingale who says otherwise. Its like saying, why be contented with only good, if you could have the best. I know that it is hard to be contented with what we have but what Ms. Nightingale did was also difficult. She dared disturb the normalcy of things. She dared to make a change and as a result, we enjoy having the profession at present. I think that Ms. Nightingale was trying to prove a point. Nurses are agents of change. We need to continue striving for the best especially for the profession and the welfare of our patients. We need to rekindle Nightingales spirit and the light of her lamp and be prepared to face the shadows it may also bring.
