5. Speedy Swift is a package delivery service that serves the greater

Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area. To maintain customer loyalty, one of
Speedy Swift's performance objectives is on-time delivery. To monitor its
performance, each delivery is measured on the following scale: early
(package delivered before the promised time), on-time (package delivered
within 5 minutes of the promised time), late (package delivered more than 5
minutes past the promised time), lost (package never delivered). Speedy
Swift's objective is to deliver 99% of all packages either early or on-time.
Another objective is to never lose a package. Speedy collected the following
data for last month's performance:

a) What scale is used to measure delivery performance?

The scale that used to measure delivery performance is

ORDINARY.

2
b) What kind of variable is delivery performance?

The delivery performance is a DISCREET variable.

Construct a frequency table

for delivery performance
for last month.

Status Frequency
EARLY 22
LATE 9
LOST 2
ONTIME 67
TOTAL 100

c) Construct a relative frequency table for delivery performance last

month. USE EXCEL AND COPY/PASTE YOUR TABLE BELOW

RELATIVE
Status Frequency
EARLY 0.22
LATE 0.09
LOST 0.02
ONTIME 0.67
TOTAL 1

d) Construct a bar chart of the frequency table for delivery performance last
month USE EXCEL AND COPY/PASTE YOUR TABLE BELOW

e) Construct a pie chart of delivery performance last month. USE EXCEL

AND COPY/PASTE YOUR TABLE BELOW

6. The marketing director of Groombridge Realty selected a sample of 30 homes
for study. The Excel data file for the data on selling price, reported in
thousands of dollars, is found under this assignment in D2L. You are required
to organize the data into a frequency distribution. For this exercise, use 5
classes, a class interval of $40 thousand, and let the lower limit of the first
class be $120 thousand.

a) Organize the data into a frequency distribution table.

Class Frequency
120-159 4
160-199 11
200-239 6
240-279 6
280-319 3

b)Use the housing price data to draw a histogram by hand.

5
c)BONUS MARK: Use Excel to construct a histogram.
YOU MUST TAKE A SCREENSHOT OF YOUR EXCEL PAGE AND
COPY/PASTE IT INTO THE SPACE BELOW. THE HISTOGRAM
MUST BE 100% CORRECT FOR THIS MARK.

d) Construct a frequency polygon for the housing data on prices. DO THIS

BY HAND.

6
e) Construct a cumulative frequency table in the space below.

Class Frequency Cumulative frequency

120-159 4 4
160-199 11 15
200-239 6 21
240-279 6 27
280-319 3 30

f) Construct a cumulative frequency polygon. DO THIS BY HAND.

7
g) Estimate the price below which 85% of the houses were sold.
Ans :$270 thousand
h) Estimate the number of houses sold for less than $190 thousand.
Ans 14.

7.The monthly issues of the Journal of Finance are available on the Internet. The
table below shows the number of times an issue was downloaded over the
last 33 months. Suppose that you wish to summarize the number of
downloads with a frequency distribution. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO
CONSTRUCT A FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION. YOU ARE REQUIRED
TO SHOW YOUR WORK for questions (a) and (b).

a) How many classes would you propose? _______

There is a mathematical formula for this which states
Number of classes = Log(observation)/Log(2) and then round of the
answer to the nearest integer following this I would propose 5 classes.

8
b) What size class interval would you suggest? ________

(Maximum value – Minimum value) divided by the classes then round it

off to the nearest value.
(7829-312)/5 = 1503.4=1503 will be the class interval

c) What quantity would you use for the lower limit of the first class?
_____The minimum value i.e 312 will be used for lower limit .

Part C – Chapter Three (5 Marks, 1 for each correct answer unless indicated
otherwise)

8.Statistics Canada gathered the following sample data on number of hours

unemployed workers spent looking for work last week. Compute the mean
and standard deviation number of hours spent searching for work last week.
YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK.

Hours Spend Searching Number of unemployed

0 up to 10 3
10 up to 20 7
20 to 30 15
30 to 40 10

40 to 50 5

Midpoint (m) Frequency (f) mf

5 3 15 75
15 7 105 1575
25 15 375 9375
35 10 350 12250
45 5 225 10125
Total 40 1070 33400

a) Estimated mean = 1070/40 = 26.75

b) Standard deviation
σ²=(∑m²f-(∑mf)²/N)/N =(33400-28622.5)/40=119.4375
σ=√σ² =10.928

9.The mean number of gallons of gasoline pumped at Ray’s Station is 9.5 with a
standard deviation of 0.75 gallons. The arithmetic mean amount of time
spent by a customer at the station is 6.5 minutes with a standard deviation of
2 minutes.

a) According to Chebyshev’s Theorem, what proportion (%) of customers

spend between 3.3 and 9.7 minutes at the station?

Solution:

K= (9.7-6.5)/2 = 1.6
1-1/k2 = 0.609375
Answer = 60.93%

b) According to the Empirical Rule, what proportion of customers pump

between 8 and 11 gallons?
Solution:
z=(x-μ)/σ
P(8<x<11)=P(-2<z<2)=0.9545

Part D – Chapter Four (13 Marks, 1 for each correct answer unless indicated
otherwise)

10. Aloha Banking Co. is studying ATM use in suburban Honolulu. A sample
of 30 ATMs showed they were used the following number of times yesterday.

a) Develop a stem-and-leaf chart.

10
11. Listed below are the salaries, in thousands of dollars, for a sample of 15
chief financial officers in the electronics industry. Determine the mean,
median, standard deviation and coefficient of skewness using Pearson’s
method.

a) Mean _____$542_____

b) Median ____$546____

c) Standard Deviation __ 25.08272_______

d) Pearson’s Coefficient of Skewness

= (Median-Mean) / Standard Deviation = (546-542)/25.08272 = 0.15947

12. Use the following table of values to answer the following questions.

a) What is the value of the first quartile? ______7________

b) What is the value of the third quartile? ______9________

c) What is the value of the median? ______8__________

11
d) Are any of the values outliers; if yes, which are outliers?
__________________SHOW HOW YOU WOULD DETERMINE THIS.
(2 marks)

An outlier in a distribution is a number that is more than 1.5 times the

length of the box away from either the lower or upper quartiles.
Specifically, if a number is less than Q1 - 1.5×IQR or greater than Q3 +
1.5×IQR, then it is an outlier.
Here Q1 =7 , IQR=2
Outlier= 7- (1.5 x 2)=4
In the data only 1 is less than 4
Hence we have 1 as outlier.

e) Draw the boxplot showing all relevant values: XMIN , XMAX , Q1, Q2,
Q3 and any outliers. (3 marks)
