 There are approximately 39 million people in the
world who are blind according to World Health
Organization reports, 2021.

 The visually impaired are at a considerable

disadvantage because they often lack the
information for avoiding obstacles and hazards
in their path.
 The system designed will detect an object or
obstacle using ultrasonic sensors and give audio
instructions for guidance.

 This system has been aimed at design and

development of a smart and intelligent blind
stick which helps in navigation for the visually
impaired people.
SMART BLIND STICK
 Traditionally visually impaired people used a
stick to find out if any obstacles are present in
front of them.

 Blind people used white cane and dogs became a

well-known attribute to blind person’s
navigation.
 Sometimes even when they use the stick, there is no
guarantee that the blind people are safe and secured in
reaching their destinations.
 There may be an obstacle in their path that may not be
encountered by the person with the help of the stick.
They will be injured if the obstacle is big enough or
dangerous.
 Blind people have big problem when they walk on the
street or stairs using white cane.
 Cane tips lasts anywhere from a few weeks to
few months so therefore spare tips to be carried
by the person.

 Guide dogs which can cost about $20,000 and

they can be useful for about 5 – 6 years.
 The main objective of this project is to assist the
blind people without the help of another person.

 Smart Blind stick is an innovative stick designed for

visually disabled people for improved navigation.

 It consists of a simple walking stick equipped with

sensors to give information about the environment.
RF TRANSMITETR

RF RECEIVER
 Our proposed project first uses ultrasonic sensors to
detect obstacles ahead using ultrasonic waves.

 On sensing obstacles the sensor passes this data to the

microcontroller. The microcontroller then processes this
data and calculates if the obstacle is close enough.

 If the obstacle is close enough the microcontroller sends

a signal and alerts the person through voice.
 The system has one more advanced feature integrated
to help the blind find their stick if they forget where
they kept it.

 A wireless RF based remote is used for this purpose. It

is a separate circuit with RF transmitter, push button
and power supply. And RF receiver will be connected
to the stick with buzzer. Pressing the push button
sounds a buzzer on the stick (main circuit) which
helps the blind person to find their stick.
 Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board based
on the ATmega328P.

 Arduino is developed by ATMEL company in

Italy, 2005.

 Arduino UNO consist of 28-pins.

 It operates at 5V power voltage.

The smart walking stick aims to solve the problems
faced by the blind people in their daily life. The
system also takes the measure to ensure their safety.
This project will help all the blind people in the
world and will make it easier for them to walk.
