Benefits of using Sesam for time domain fatigue of FOW

• There is seamless integration between Sesam and Bladed or Sima for the coupled analysis (including
turbine, hull, mooring, cables)
• Sesam supports import of data from other tools like OrcaFlex for motions, sea elevations, time series of mooring line
forces and time series of turbine tower forces for use in structural analysis and fatigue calculations. Special considerations
should be made on the co-ordinate systems and hydrodynamic calculations at instantaneous or initial position. The data need to be in a desired format

6 DNV © 22 MARCH 2024 OPEN

Benefits of using Sesam for time domain fatigue of FOW

• Different types of fatigue checks for the level of accuracy you desire
• Screening of a whole model to find high damage zones for early stages. This normally results in zones where you do
detailed fatigue calculations
• Hotspot fatigue checks according to DNV-RP-C203 detailed design checks. This includes the effect of multi-directional
loading (evaluating fatigue along or normal to the weld)
• The hotspot fatigue check method is based on Chapter 4.3 “Welded connections in plated structures” and Appendix “F.12 Comm. 4.3.4
Multidirectional fatigue analysis” in DNV-RP-C203
• The implementation in Sesam Core is verified by DNV experts and tested by several industry players

Benefits of using Sesam for time domain fatigue of FOW
• 53 % reduction in data storage
• The new functionality significantly reduces the data storage. The structural model is
normally not large, but due to the number of time steps and Design Load Cases
(DLC) the result database can be extremely large. We have reduced the data
storage from typically 117 GB to 55 GB compared to the previous version of the
structural analysis tool in Sesam

• 33 % reduction in computational time of structural and fatigue analysis

• The computation efficiency gain is a result of a new design computational engine,
that is streaming results from the structural analysis solver to the fatigue post-
processing instead of writing/reading results to disk. We have increased the
performance from typically 122 min to 82 min. The huge performance
improvements can be achieved irrespectively of whether it is run locally or using
our cloud service

• 61% reduction in time domain wave load analysis

• Analysis time is reduced from typically 31h to 12h. There is also a significant
performance improvement on the load reconstruction from coupled analysis to
structural model where the analysis time is reduced with 81%, typically from 36min
to 7min

• Sesam Core removes limitations in model size and number of time steps
• The previous tool (Stofat) for time domain fatigue of FOW had limitations in model
size, number of time steps (110.000) and it was not supported on cloud. Stofat
continues to be used in conceptual and early studies

Benefits of using Sesam for time domain fatigue of FOW
• Sesam Wind Manager supports the analysis
workflow for time domain fatigue of FOW
• All the way from load reconstruction, structural analysis,
fatigue calculations (in Sesam Core) to visualization of
fatigue damage results
• The workflow allows for fast design iterations
• Choose to run on cloud (recommended) or your own
computer
Example on input for setting up the parameters for the analysis
• The modelling tool GeniE allows for modelling and
visualization of fatigue property definitions for
screening and hotspot fatigue analysis directly
• The definitions are made on the concept model resulting
in less need for editing
• No need-to-know FE numbering when specifying hotspot
details

FOW is a relatively new industry and working industry practices are not yet fully
developed. The industry uses different methodologies

Sesam supports two different methodologies (fully coupled time domain and frequency domain) and will
support the FOW industry with solutions in between to facilitate performance in the various design stages

DNV © 22 MARCH 2024

Analysis methods and workflows depend on design phase (examples)

• Conceptual/Pre-FEED design • FEED/Detailed design

• Frequency domain (FD) or time domain (TD) or in between
• ‘Detailed’ TD coupled analysis (higher detail)
• Uncoupled or ‘simplified’ coupled analysis these two levels • TD load reconstruction on full structural mesh
(low detail on other model parts, e.g. simplified turbine) (No need for stochastic drag linearisation)
(For FD: wind and wave loads are uncorrelated) (Accurately captures phase relationship)

• Fast design iterations • Higher fidelity, suitable for certification

• Limited number of design load cases • Large number of design load cases
(quick analysis, low data storage requirement) (extensive analysis, high data storage requirement)

The various methods are complementary for the whole design cycle

12 DNV © 22 MARCH 2024

Frequency Domain

• Low fidelity and high efficiency focus

• A few key driving DLCs and Equivalent Design
Wave (EDW) approach
• Rotor-nacelle assembly (RNA) represented as point
mass
• Wind turbine loads considered as extreme loadfor

Structural analysis - GeniE

• Modelling structural details and set-ups for time fatigue screening and hot-spot fatigue calculations in Sesam Core can
now be done inside GeniE. The benefit is that all can be done from one user interface and that there is no longer
a need to edit the fatigue input data if the FE numbers change
• Intuitive and fast visual setup of fatigue properties on the 3D model, for screening and detailed hotspot checks. This is done in the
same tool as used for modelling. There is no need to learn a new tool
• Modelling and visualization of fatigue property definitions for screening and hotspot fatigue analysis directly
• The definitions are made on the concept model resulting in less need for editing and no need-to-know FE numbering when specifying

Structural analysis - GeniE

• The new functionality for plate offsets allows you to model plates and their stiffeners with both plate offsets and beam
eccentricities. The advantage this gives is that you don’t have to decide what is the top of steel when you start
modelling, you can choose during your work
• The structural analysis results will be the same irrespective of which method you choose
• Notice that when plate offsets are used, the applied loads to the plates are in the offset position

Eccentricities added to stiffeners, the plate is the reference elevation Offset added to plates, the stiffener centre line is the reference elevation

Structural analysis - GeniE

• Modelling of multiple soil conditions allows for different soil data to be used per pile. This has always been part of
Sesam, but modelling has been cumbersome. Now all can be done faster and with ease from the GeniE user
interface (graphically or editing the GeniE script file)
• User can now assign a specific location for each pile. Each pile in a model can therefore have different soil conditions
• The FE mesh of each pile is adjusted according to the soil sub-layers of the assigned Location

31 DNV © 22 MARCH 2024 OPEN

Structural analysis - GeniE

• It is now possible to linearize the soil data to the piles instead of linearizing soil and pile data to pile head. The benefit
is that the piles are treated as beams and one can therefore do member code check and fatigue calculation
based on dynamic analysis
• Data from non-linear pile/soil analysis including the linearized springs information can be imported into GeniE and the piles are
automatically replaced with beam elements to create a linearized foundation
• Note that due to the difference in the implementation method with the pile head linearization, there are differences in eigenvalue results
and stiffness directional properties
• This method is an alternative to the Equivalent Static Load method for ULS and FLS of piles

Structural analysis - GeniE

• Users can now run an earthquake Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) and execute code checks in GeniE based on
linear earthquake response techniques using modal combination rules. Sesam has always supported this, but such
analysis has required different analyses, combination of results and code checking in Framework. The benefit is that
all analysis (eigenvalue and linear static), modelling of earthquake data, executing the earthquake analysis and
code checking can be done inside the GeniE user interface
• There is a new reference document in the GeniE installation on how to do RSA

For more information, see the new reference document

Structural analysis - GeniE

• User specific descriptions can now be added and edited to structural concepts in GeniE. The advantage is that you
can add specific information about members that you want to keep and share with others
• Multi-line description is supported
• Can be used to add notes to structural concepts

Structural analysis – Wajac
• New advantage on calculating impact loads due to
breaking wave according to NEK IEC 61400-3-1 rules
• When running a constrained wave analysis with option

• New advantage to do better understand analysis

results
• For all types of time domain analysis types, Wajac can now
print wave, wind and current kinematics to the external CSV
files where further post-processing can be done. One example
could be to make 2D graphs

Example on a 2D graph of wave kinematic velocity (in X-direction)

• Another benefit is the ability to specify additional
irregular sea running in a separate direction
• It is also possible to run a constrained wave analysis with
additional irregular sea

Hydrodynamic analysis – HydroD

• The new HydroD covers hydrostatic analysis and modelling of hydrodynamic properties for frequency and time domain.
The main benefit is a modern and intuitive tool covering all the modelling of data for use in Sesam hydrodynamic
analyses. Other advantages are
• A flexible compartment model
• Previously the structure model was used also as compartment model.
This could cause problems when those two models were not the same
• Support modelling of damping sheet and fixed lid
• Previously these had to be defined as separate HydroModels and the
analysis had to be set up as a Multibody analysis even if it was only one
physical body. In HydroD 7.0 and later releases these are concepts
which are defined in the loading conditions
• Flexible modelling of multiple mass models
• The mass may be split into several mass models. Global mass models
defined in the HydroModel will be applied to all loading conditions, while
local mass models belonging to a LoadingCondition will be used only in
that loading condition. The mass models are added up by HydroD when
it is creating the input to hydrodynamic analysis
• Multiple additional matrices instead of one
• It is possible to define more than one additional damping matrix or
additional restoring matrix. All matrices of the same type will be added up
when creating the input to Wadam The user interface of HydroD 7.0

Hydrodynamic analysis – HydroD
• HydroD 7.0 comes with a new and moder user
interface where input is checked on the fly, much
better 3D views for model verifications, and a more
robust handling of large models
• The pictures are illustrations on some of the advances in
visualization of hydrodynamic models

Hydrodynamic analysis – HydroD
• Models are only defined once. This means you don’t
need to re-edit models for different purposes
• Structure model
• Mass model
• Compartment model
• Morison model
• Update only in one place if a model is changed

• Easy access to files and information. There is no longer

a need to know the location of such information – the
access is available from the user interface. Typical
examples are
• Loading condition (complete buoyancy and mass information)
• Mass information for a specific mass model
• Analysis Input and Output files
• Show in File Explorer

Hydrodynamic analysis
• Wadam • Postresp
• Much larger panel models • Performance improvements on importing large result files
• Increase from 50.000 to 100.000 panels with QTF
• User defined frequency dependent external forces, mass • This is now reduced to minutes compared to hours before
and damping can be given on a node in the Morison model • Postresp can now read a result file with QTFs having up to
• The user scenario could be simulating the aerodynamic forces acting on 200 frequencies
a floating wind tower using the frequency domain methodology • This is 3 times higher than before when the limit was 60 frequencies

• Wasim • Postresp can now print the design waves obtained through
the method outlined in DNV-RP-C103
• Wasim can be restarted from previous time step where the
• This used to be a cumbersome process where one had to manually
analysis was finished successfully define a group of response spectrum (per headings and per wave
• This means that it is not needed to re-run from start if there is a need to spectrum), find the maximum and manually check the corresponding
stop during execution peak value in the RAO and divide the two values manually to get the
amplitude of the design wave (also locate where the peak is to determine
• Output of time series of accelerations at any user input the wave period for the design wave)
positions
• Accelerations at multiple locations can now be generated per time
domain analysis. Previously only results for one location could be made
in a single analysis, while it was a manual process to produce for other
locations

Coupled analysis - Sima

• Sima supports time domain VIV calculations. The benefit
is to calculate more accurate results as compared to
frequency domain VIV. The following limitations in
frequency domain are overcome
• Non-linear structural properties not included, e.g., soil-pipe
interactions, hysteresis stiffness/damping
• Limited to constant flow conditions
• Combine simultaneously acting load processes not accounted,
e.g. wave and VIV loads

• The results have been extensively validated

• Validation with model tests
• Pipe models with/without suppression devices and or staggered
buoyancy elements
• Pipe models with various configurations, i.e. straight, catenary
and lazy-wave shapes
• Validation with field measurements
• VIV (Vortex Induced Vibrations) of top tensioned risers
• VIM (Vortex Induced Motions) of floating wind turbines
• Results published in >20 conference/journal papers
