COURSE CODE: EEC 233
COURSE TITLE: ELECTRICAL MACHINES II
CLASS: ND II
TIME ALLOWED: 2Hrs:30Mins
EXAMINERS: Engr. OPARANWATA and Engr. SHEHU

INSTRUCTIONS
 Answer any four questions, two from each section
 All questions carry equal marks
 All answer should be in ink except drawings

SECTION A

QUESTION 1
a. (i) Draw a singly-excited system. 3mks
(ii) Derive the electrical energy input for the singly excited system above (Q1ai). 8mks

b. With the aid of diagram, state the principle of induction and its expression. 5mks
c. An iron-ring of mean mean diameter 15cm and 10 cm2 in cross-sectional area is wound
with 200 turns of wire. There is an air gap of 2 mm cut in the ring. For a flux density of
1wb/m2 and relative permeability of 200, find the exciting current, the inductance and the
stored energy.. 9mks

QUESTION 2
a. Draw the general representation of electromechanical energy conversion device. 3mks
b. (i). Based on the principle of energy conservation, write an energy balance equation for a
motor. 3mks
(ii). Explain the four energy terms involved. (12mks)
c. the inductance of a coil is 0.15 H. the coil has 100 turns. Find the following
(i). Total magnetic flux through the coil when the current is 4 A. 2mk
(ii). Energy stored in the magnetic field. 3mks
(iii). Voltage induced in the coil when current is reduced to zero in 0.01 second. 2mkd

QUESTION 3
a. With the aid of diagrams explain the following principles as applied to electrical
machines;
(i) Interaction. 7mks
(ii) Alignment. 7mks
(iii) State two areas of application of force of alignment and interactions. 2mks
b. An electromagnet is made using a horse shoe core. The core has an effective length of
600mm and the cross-sectional area of 500 m2. A rectangular block of steel is held by the
electromagnet for of alignment and a force of 20 N is required to free it. The magnetic
circuit through the block is 200 mm long and the effective cross-sectional area is again
500 mm2. The relative permeability of both core and block is 700. If the magnet is
energized by a coil of 100 turns, estimate the coil current. 9mks

QUESTION 4
a. What is transformer and how does it transfer electrical energy from one circuit to
another? 4mks
b. With the aid of a diagram, explain the two types of transformer based on construction
8mks
c. With the aid of sinusoidal A.C. wave form derive the EMF equation of transformer.
7mks
d. A 500kVA,33000/240V,50Hz transformer has 110 turns on the secondary. Assuming an
ideal transformer. Calculate

losses, when supplying full load at 0.8 power factor. Calculate the efficiency of the
transformer at 0.8 power factor: 7mks
(i) On full load
(ii) On half load
