What are Functions?
A function is something which provides a rule on how to map inputs to outputs.
From primary school you might have seen this as a ‘number machine’.

Inverse Functions
A function takes and input and produces an output.
The inverse of a function does the opposite: it describes how we get from the
output back to the input.

Quickfire Questions
In your head, find the inverse functions, by thinking what the original
functions does, and what the reverse process would therefore be.

Example 1-Past Paper Questions on Functions
f(x) = 2x - 3 g(x) = 9 - x2 h(x) = 3x
a)Find
(i) f(4),
f(4) = 2(4) - 3 = 8 -3 =5
f(4) = 5
(ii) hg(3),
g(3) = 9 - 32 = 0
h(0) = 30 = 1
hg(3) = 1
40
Example 1-Past Paper Questions on Functions
f(x) = 2x - 3 g(x) = 9 - x2 h(x) = 3x
a)Find
(iii) g(2x) in its simplest form,
g(x) = 9 - x2
b)Find f -1(x)
Step 1: y = 2x - 3 f -1(x) =
Step 2: (y + 3)/2 = x
Step 3: (x + 3)/2 = y
(x - 4) = 0 means x = 4 (x + 1) = 0 means x = -1
43
Example 1-Past Paper Questions on Functions
f(x) = 2x - 3 g(x) = 9 - x2 h(x) = 3x
44
Example 2-Past Paper Questions on Functions
f(x) = 8 - 3x g(x) = h(x) = 2 x
a)(i)Find
f(8/3) = 8 - 3(8/3) = 0
(ii)gh(-2),
h(-2) = 2-2 = ¼
g(¼) = 10
(¼) + 1
g(¼) = 10/1.25 = 8
45
Example 2-Past Paper Questions on Functions
f(x) = 8 - 3x g(x) = h(x) = 2 x
a)(iii)Find
y = 10 y = 10 - x
x+1 x
x = 10 g-1(x) = 10 - x
y+1 x
xy + x = 20
xy = 10 - x
