MORSE TEST
6. During the Morse test on a four stroke petrol engine with four cylinders, the following results were obtained,
Bore = 75mm, stroke = 100mm, fuel consumption = 0.1 kg/min, calorific value of fuel = 42000 kJ/kg,
clearance volume of each cylinder = 98.2cc. the brake power measurements are given below: With all
cylinder working = 15.1 kW, with cylinder No.1 cut off = 10.44 kW, with cylinder No.2 cut off = 10.59 kW,
with cylinder No.3 cut off = 10.67 kW, with cylinder No.4 cut off = 10.52 kW. Determine (a) Mechanical
efficiency (b) Indicated thermal efficiency (c) ideal thermal efficiency and (d) relative efficiency. [October
2016]
7. The following results were obtained during a Morse test on a four stroke petrol engine; BP with all cylinders
working = 11.92 kW; BP with cylinder 1 cut out = 8.46 kW; BP with cylinder 2 cut out = 8.60 kW; BP with
cylinder 3 cut out = 8.54 kW; BP with cylinder 4 cut out = 8.50 kW. Calculate the mechanical efficiency of
the engine. If the fule consumption is 3.5 kg/hour, find the indicated thermal efficiency. Calorific value of fuel
is 42000 kJ/kg. (Answer: ηm = 87.78%, ηIT= 33.26%) [April 1999, 1994, October 2015, 2014, 2010, 2005,

8. Explain the Morse test for finding out the indicated power of a multi cylinder engine. (Or) Describe the
procedure for conducting Morse test. [April 2015, 2012, 2005, 2004, 1995, October 2019, 2000, 1998,
