Lesson 14: Linear and Non-Linear Functions

Problem 1
It costs $4 to enter a carnival and an additional $2 for each activity you do once inside the carnival. The equation below
represents the total cost spent at the carnival, y, as a function of the number of activities done, x.

y = 2x + 4

a. Create a table of values that represents some inputs and their corresponding outputs and use the table of
values to sketch a graph of the function.

b. Does this function appear to be a linear function?

c. What is the rate of change?

d. What is the initial value?

Problem 2
The equation below represents the area of a square, a, as a function of its side length, s.

a = s2

a. Create a table of values that represents some inputs and their corresponding outputs and use the table of
values to sketch a graph of the function.

b. Does this function appear to be a linear function? Explain.

Lesson 14: Target Task

Problem 1
A chocolate factory makes 240 chocolates in 6 minutes. The total number of chocolates produced is a function of the
number of minutes that the factory is running.

a. Write an equation that describes the total number of chocolates produced (y), as a function of the number of
minutes (x) that the factory runs.

b. Use the equation you wrote in part a to find the number of chocolates produced when the factory runs for 3
minutes, 16 minutes, and 20 minutes.

c. Plot the points from part b on the graph below.

d. Is the function linear or nonlinear? Explain how you know.

Lesson 14: Problem Set

Problem 1
There are 4 chickens on a farm. Each month, the farm receives 2 more chickens to add to the roost. The equation below
shows the number of total chickens in the roost, c, after m months.

c = 2m + 4
a. Create a table of values to show different amounts of chickens at the farm over time. Then use the table of
values to sketch a graph of the function.

b. Describe the relationship of the function.

c. Does the function appear to be linear? Why or why not?

Problem 2
The equation below represents the volume of a cube, V, as a function of its side length, s.

V = s3
a. Create a table of values that represents some inputs and their corresponding outputs. Be sure to include at least
4 coordinate points, including positive and negative inputs, as well as an input of zero.
b. Use the table of values to sketch a graph of the function.

c. Why was it helpful to include negative inputs?

d. Is the graph of the function linear or non-linear? Explain your answer by describing the shape of the graph.

Problem 5
Lu's uncle gave her his original collection of 22 Captain Amaze comic books. Since then, Lu started collecting Captain
Amaze comic books and she's received two more copies every year.

a. Write an equation using two variables that represent the number of comic books, y, as a function of the years, x
, since Lu began collecting.
b. Complete the table of inputs and outputs below.

Years since collection began, x 0 1 8

Number of comic books in collection, y 22 44

c. Graph the inputs and outputs from the table on the coordinate plane below.
