CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO OSH STANDARD
OSH is an abbreviation for Occupational Safety and Health is a discipline that has many
scopes. involving three (3) major fields namely occupational safety, occupational health and
industrial hygiene.
2. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH is a broad concept which explains how the different hazards
and risks at work may cause an illness and emphasizes that health programs are essential
in controlling work-related and/or occupational diseases.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is concerned with safeguarding employees in the
workplace against accidents, injuries, and toxic exposure. While accidents can occur at any
moment, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that safety measures are taken to decrease the
probability of accidents and to maintain a safe working environment. Putting OHS first in your
company has various advantages, including:
It was no surprise that every industry has some level of safety risk. Recognizing these
threats and ensuring that employees have the training, safety equipment, and other resources they
need to ensure safety is by far the most critical aspect of an effective Occupational Health and
Safety policy. Injury, reduced productivity especially in the absence or loss of trained personnel,
workers' compensation claims, and possible penalties from the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration can all result from a failure to enforce effective rules and measures.
Therefore, for an organization to implement occupational health and safety measures for all
employees, OHS must be a primary priority. It is also a legal obligation to ensure that all personnel
is informed of all safety protocols. If the workplace can maintain employees fit and healthy, there
will be troubles and leaves, which would also cost the organization a lot of money. The absence
of qualified labor reduced productivity, loss of corporate reputation and other costs will be incurred
by the company. To avoid incurring these additional expenditures, every company should impose
a strong emphasis on occupational health and safety and ensure that employees are in excellent
health.
