Subject: Signals and Systems

• The symbols have their usual meaning. Make reasonable assumptions if necessary.

1. (a) Find DTFT of x[n] = ( 12 )|n−1| .

(b) If the DTFT of x[n] is X(ejw ), find DTFT of y[n] = (n − 1)2 x[n] in terms of X(ejw ).
2. If we have the following information about x[n]. Its DTFT is given by X(ejw ).
(a) x[n] is real
(b) x[0] > 0
(c) x[n] = 0 for n > 0

(d) Im{X(e
Rπ )} = sin(w) − sin(2w)

difference equation

(a) Determine the frequency response H(ejw ).
(b) Determine the impulse response h[n].
4. A causal LTI system is described by the difference equation y[n] − ay[n − 1] = bx[n] + x[n − 1], where a
is real and less than 1 in magnitude.
(a) Find the value of b such that the frequency response of the system satisfies |H(ejw )| = 1 for all w.
(b) Comment on the nature of the above system.
5. Find the Nyquist rate for the following signals

(b) x(t) = sin(4000πt)
 πt 2
(c) x(t) = sin(4000πt)
πt

6. A continuous-time signal x(t) is obtained at the output of an ideal LPF with cut-off frequency wc =
1000π. If impulse-train sampling is performed on x(t), which of the following sampling period(s) would
guarantee that x(t) can be recovered from its sample version using an appropriate LPF?
(a) Ts = 0.5 × 10−3
(b) Ts = 2 × 10−3
(a) Ts = × 10−4
