Dona Teodora choose Jose as Rizal's name because she was a devotee of a
Christian Saint San Jose (Saint Joseph).

Not yet in personal, only in the picture. Rizal's house is well-structured

seemingly made of fine materials in order to be preserved. Every corner looks
like it is full of sweet memories of Rizal's family who has a simple living. The
largeness and spaces are just enough to make them comfortable and also I
appreciate its structural design and the beauty of the landscape's view outside.
3. Why is Calamba referred to as “the cradle of a genius”? Describe Calamba
as a town.

Calamba is referred to as "the cradle of a genius" due to its impressive

natural beauty. The land is said to have inspiredand artists and became known
by this nickname early in history.

The town Calamba is situated on a verdant plain by the rippling Laguna de

Bay. A few kilometres to the south looms the legendary Mt. Makiling, and beyond
this mountain lies the coffee-producing Batangas. North of the town spreads the
Laguna de Bay, "a lake of poems and songs", with many sailboats gliding by the
somnolent Talim island and numerous birds flying in the azure skies. Beyond the
lake, to the far distance in the north is Antipolo, the famous mountain shrine of
the miraculous Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

Dona Teodora is a religious mother, softhearted, courteous, hard-working,

well-read and a primary teacher of Jose.

6. What could be the reason/s why Don Francisco chooses Rizal as the family
name of his children?

Answer:
Don Francisco chooses Rizal as the family name of his children because
Rizal is a shortened form of the Spanish word "second crop", seemed suited to a
family of farmers who were making a second start in a new home.

7. Describe the Rizal family as a social institution. Why should the family
strive to attain its noble objectives?

Answer:

The Rizal family had a simple, contented, and a happy life. In consonance
with the Filipino custom, family ties among the Rizals were intimately close. Don
Francisco and Dona Teodora loved their children, but they never spoiled them.
They were strict parents and they trained them to love God, to behave well, to be
obedient, and to respect people, specially the old folks. Whenever the children,
including Jose Rizal, got into mischief, they were given a sound spanking.
Evidently they believe in the maxim: spare the rod and spoil the child.

8. Explain the old adage, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” 9. What are the
functions of the family? How would you describe the Filipino family today?

Answer:

For me the maxim: "Spare the rod and spoil the child" means to hurt a
child as kind of disciplining is not applicable instead let them learn and mature
through words or sermons to avoid experiencing violence. The functions of the
family are to mold the minds of the children and develop values, good conduct or
character as they grow up. Most importantly is to teach them to respect people
and to be God fearing. Family has the significant role in the child intellectual,
physical, emotional, social, spiritual and moral development since it will serve as
their cocoon until they become fully grown and self-dependent. Our country is
now in a rapid growing population and the teenage pregnancy is one of the factor
that contributes on it. Teenagers are not yet ready to uphold their biggest
responsibilities as parents so what usually happens is that they escape to their
obligations and causes defeciency to child development. Most children grow up
without father or mother and as a result they suffer from bereavement and they
felt like that there personality is incomplete. Employment is also one of the
causes wherein some parents went abroad to sustain financial needs but it affects
the child rearing and brings a feeling of different from the child who is growing
up with complete family. Broken family is the most serious brought by infidelity.

10. Describe the life of Rizal as a young boy. Compare his life when he was
young to our boys today.

Answer:

Rizal as a young boy was a remarkable child who become interested in

poetry, music, art and European literature. At an early age you can see to him
that he was very talented and has a great potential. Rizal was so creative in
thinking and knew how to manage his negative emotions. Comparing to our
young boys today Rizal put his attention in developing his skills in reading and
writing literary articles while being entertained to what he was doing. Most
children nowadays are and not well-mannered and busy on online gaming rather
than exposing oneself to literature.

EXERCISE 5 – A MANILA STUDENT:SCHOLASTICTRIUMPH

. IN ATENEO AND UST
Study Questions to Answer: Copy and write the following questions together
with your answer on a 1 whole yellow sheet of paper. Write eligibly.

1. What do you think at the outset; Don Francisco wanted Rizal to study in
Letran? What could be the reason why he changed his mind and finally
enrolled him in Ateneo?

Answer:

I think the reason why Don Francisco wanted Rizal to study first in
Letran is because he believed that Rizal could develop his knowledge in studying
in Letran but he realizad that for Rizal to attain his capabilities, he should study
in Ateneo where he can manage his abilities and improve all his skills with the
kind of teaching in Ateneo.

2. What is your impression about Ateneo de Manila as an educational

institution many years ago and today?

Answer:

Ateneo de Manila from many years ago is an educational institution

made for intelligent persons whom have money to support their studies. They
provide support with no payments from poor people. And as compared today,
Ateneo de Manila is now a privately held educational institution that offers their
services for thousands of pesos and mostly rich people are the one who can study
in there, but as compared long time ago, the degree of education they provide is
really exceptional.

3. What was the reason why Rizal was almost denied admission to Ateneo?

Answer:

The reason why Rizal was almost denied admission to Ateneo is that Rizal
was late for registration and he was sickly and undersized for his age, Rizal was
then 11 years old.

4. As a student, what was your experience during your first day in a new
school environment?

Answer:

As a student, my experience during my first day in a new school

environment was full of excitement as well as fear for the different challenges. I
was filled of joy when I met new friends and fascinated with the surroundings.
Everything was really different and I made a lot adjustment in dealing with
people and doing personal tasks. It is also my first to encounter such scary
teacher but good in teaching which made me more challenged and dealt pressure
to me.

5. What was his prize-winning poem at Ateneo? Can you tell the message of
the poem?
Answer:

Rizal's prize-winning poem at Ateneo is "TO THE FILIPINO YOUTH" which

tells about the love of the country and Rizal wanted each one of the Filipino
youths to develop their passion in fighting for freedom because he believed that
youths are the only of our mother land.

6. As a student, how can your teachers inspire you to study harder? Are
getting high grades the only motivating factor?

Answer:

As a student, teachers can inspire me to study harder by not making us to

be like threatened because in that way I feeling like hopeless and worthless
despite of the efforts I showed. They should be friendly and reminds us the proof
that there's no difficult. We should help us each other as the teacher learned also
to his/her students. For me it is not so appropriate for teachers to become hostile
to students because they didn't know what personal difficulties we are going
through specially that we expect the school as our second home and the teachers
as our parents. Comfortable learning is better giving pressure.

7. What are the qualities do you expect from a teacher?

Answer:

The qualities that I expect from a teacher are friendly, creative, patient,
diligent and cooperative. Another thing is that a teacher must have th knowledge
because the students are all dependent on the information they would give. A
good teacher must have an ability to transfer all his teachings to his students by
different strategies that make the compression of students faster. These empires
are always at war for supremacy in the class.

8. Identify the weak points of a teacher that impede the affectivity of the
teaching – learning process in the classroom.

Answer:
One of the problems that may arise in the classroom concerning the
teacher is the poor ability of some to transfer information to their students
because they lack knowledge on a certain lesson. And also it is important for a
teacher to have a mutual connection with his students for him to easily handle
every class discussion.

9. Describe the system of education under the Jesuit educational

management.

Answer:

The system of education employed by the the Jesuits was more advanced
than any colleges on that period. They trained the characters of students by rigid
discipline and religious instruction. Student heard mass in the morning before
the beginning of the classes. Student were divided into groups: Roman Empire
and Carthaginian Empire.

10. Make a comparative analysis of the academic climate between Ateneo de

Manila and University of Santo Tomas during Rizal’s time.

Answer:

Ateneo de Manila which was formerly Ateneo Municipal, was a boy's

school and its graduates finish their education with the title bachiller en artes
which is in Rizal's time was equivalent to today's highschool. The University of
Santo Tomas on the other hands, was the only institution in the Philippines that
provided college degrees. As to the academic climate in both institutions, in the
Ateneo, classes last the whole day beginning with a mass at 7 o'clock in the
morning. All students are required to attend such masses. The students are under
strict supervision by their teachers. This explains why most of Rizal's poems and
other literary works were pro-Spanish and pro-Catholic such as his poem praising
the victory of Urbiztondo over the moros of Jolo and his poem about the Virgin
Mary. All the time in Ateneo is devoted to study, academics and co-curricular
activities such as contests in Spanish and Latin, Greek.

On the other, at the University of Santo Tomas, the students were given
more freedom. Half of the day is given to study and the rest was free time. The
students are not anymore required to attend mass. This freedom is not leniency
but this was allowed by the University authorities on the basis that the college
students are believed to be more matured and responsible. Rizal in his spare time
used returned to Ateneo to take up a course in land surveying. His other
classmate Rafael Palma also went back to the Ateneo to take up commerce. Both
courses were considered vocational courses. Some students used the spare time
on useless activities such as doing la cuacha - which at that time meant doing
nothing or playing truant. They wasted their time courting women. Rizal also did
that when he courted three women at the same time. The students also formed
their barkadas and in Rizal's experience formed El Companerismo. As for the
grades of the students, certainly study at the University of Santo Tomas was
harder than the Ateneo because UST was a University and the Ateneo was a high
school. It would be unfair to compare Rizal's excellent grades with the latter and
those with the former, plus the many distractions that faced young men such as
Rizal such as the women, the barkadas and the idle time at Ongpin's El 88 store
and the pancitan at the Panciteria Macanista de Buen Gusto at San Fernando
Street.

Another thing Ateneo remained a boy's school during the Spaniards

period. The University of Santo Tomas on the other hand, began admitting
women in its Escuela de Matronas y Pateras or the school for midwives in its San
Jose Building in the far side of Intramorus. The women had to be married or
widowed and if their husband was still alive, must have his permission.
Furthermore the women wishing to become a midwife must have the
endorsement of the local parish priest.
