Takanori Takebe is currently a Director of Commercial Innovation in Center for Stem Cell &
Organoid Medicine (CuSTOM) (2017-), Endowed Chair of Organoid Medicine and Associate
Professor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (2020-). He is also Professor at
Institute of Research at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) (2018-), and the founding
director, Communication Design Center, Yokohama City University (2018-), Principal
Investigator at the Takeda-CiRA joint program (2016-) and the founding director of Stellar
Science Foundation (2021-).
Biography
Dr Takebe was born and raised in Yokohama, Japan and entered medical school at Yokohama
City University. After spending time as a surgical elective at the world’s leading liver transplant
center in 2010, he shifted his own career to become a clinician scientist to find alternatives to
traditional medicine as he met many patients who were unlikely to be treated within current
paradigm. He earned his M.D. degree at Yokohama City University School of Medicine in 2011.
His level of scientific productivity and excellence has resulted in his obtaining an independent
position as associate professor at Yokohama City University in 2013, and appointed as assistant
professor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) in 2015. He, as one founder
and co-directors, recently established world first organoid center, named Center for Stem Cell
and Organoid Medicine (CuSTOM) with generous philanthropic gifts from the Farmer Family
Foundation and now establish collaborative programs with Japanese top-tier research institute,
RIKEN. CuSTOM integrates cutting edge stem cell and organoid technologies to facilitate
research of human biology and disease, with the goal of translating this knowledge to improve
pediatric health. Dr. Takebe is also a Principal Investigator at the Takeda-CiRA joint program in
2016 directed by Novel Laurate Dr Shinya Yamanaka, and jointly appointed as full professor of
Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 2018 at the age of 31, recorded the youngest in the
Japanese history of university appointment.
Dr Takebe’s team became the 1st in the world to create a human liver in-a-dish model
(vascularized liver organoids) from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. In 2019, team
succeeded in advancing interconnected multi-organ digestive system from human stem cells
(Nature, 2013, Nature, 2017, Nature, 2019, Nature Medicine, 2020). His lab also pioneers his
own proposed "street medical" approach, which aims to lend design and art principles to promote
happiness-driven healthy behaviors at a daily touchpoint. He is also a book author of: Street
Medical. Redefining "New Medicine" to Design People's Lives" (Nihon Keizai Shimbun
Publishing). His major awards include 2014: The Bälz Prize / 2016: the New York Stem Cell
Foundation Robertson Investigator Award / 2019: Japan Academy Medal / 2020: NIH Director's
New Innovator Award / 2021 Japan Open Innovation Prize. He is a serial entrepreneur and
established lab-enabled startups including EVA Therapeutics, The Liver Company, Organoid
Neogenesis Laboratory, Open Medical Lab, LIVELL, and Kanzo BioMedicine.
He is also elected a member of American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI), elected boards
of the International Stem Cell Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) and Japan Society for
Regenerative Medicine (JSRM), and the boards of highly recognized scientific journal such as
Cell Stem Cell. Dr Takebe is passionate to promote cutting-edge science, enjoy supporting next-
gen investigators, eager to harness emerging technology and stakeholders, and enjoys
community building. This recently lend itself to launch a non-profit initiative called “Stellar
Science Foundation” with a goal to redesign people-centric science eco-system, successfully
recruiting highly-disruptive Stellar Inventors across disciplines.
