Reviewing the
Literature: Process
and Product

WHAT IS LITERATURE
REVIEW?
HOW IS RRL
STRUCTURED?
LITERATURE
REVIEW
It is the part (of the paper) where
there is extensive reference to
related research in your field and
where you position yourself and
your work amongst these sources.
(Ridley, 2012, p.2 as cited ‘Writing a Literature Review”).
LITERATURE REVIEW
A literature review is a survey of everything that
has been written about a particular topic, theory,
or research question. It may provide the
background for larger work, or it may stand on its
own. Much more than a simple list of sources, an
effective literature review analyzes and
synthesizes information about key themes or
issue (Skene, n.d.).
LITERATURE REVIEW
A literature review helps ground and
situates the study in relation to previous
knowledge. It helps stimulate new ideas,
avoids unnecessary duplication of studies
and shows the gaps in the research that
one can further investigate (Rocco and
Plakhotnik, 2009 as cited in Trinidad, 2018).
LITERATURE REVIEW

A literature review is the part of the

research where the researcher
systematically studies, classifies, and
locates materials, articles, documents, and
sources that contain information about the
research topic (Trinidad, 2018).
Reviewing the
Literature:
Process and
Product
AS A PROCESS

❏ Analyzing different
perspectives of (research)
papers
❏ Getting ideas and inspirat
❏ Evaluating what method/s
other researchers employ
❏ Understanding pros and c
of the established analysis
the research
❏ Evaluating the quality of t
research
AS A PRODUCT
❏ Contribution to the
existing and available
knowledge about the
issue or phenomenon
❏ Critical Analysis of
literature
❏ Written Synthesis
Four Purposes of RRL

1. To identify the existing academic

conversation surrounding a topic.
Four Purposes of RRL

2. To determine gaps in the research.

Four Purposes of RRL

3. To demonstrate knowledge on a
particular area of study.
Four Purposes of RRL

4. To contribute to the existing

literature by addressing a research
gap.
Let’s talk
about these.
How were the literatures
structured in the review?

Why do you think the

review is structured as
such?
STRUCTURE OF THE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION
- states the research focus
- provides context
- presents an overview of the literature
STRUCTURE OF THE REVIEW

BODY
- presents supporting details that are
arranged according to the most
prominent arguments
STRUCTURE OF THE REVIEW

CONCLUSION
- can recommend a direction that can
be pursued by future researchers
interested in the given topic
WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN
WRITING LITERATURE
REVIEW?
1

GATHERING SOURCES
o Focus on the topic and
read with a purpose
o Find relevant and
timely researches that
will help you formulate
your position
2

EVALUATING SOURCES
o Consider author’s
credentials or
arguments/claims
o Consider conclusions,
gaps, patterns, and
omission
3

WRITING A LITERATURE
REVIEW
o Organize the three
parts- introduction,
body, and conclusion-
of the literature review
SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO A
SUCCESSFUL LITERATURE REVIEW
1

BY THEME
o It is the most common
way of organizing the
body of the literature
review.
o It is used when explaining
themes or issues related
to the topic.
1

BY THEME
o The literature review
is organized around
a topic or issue,
rather than the
progression of time.
1

BY THEME
o A review organized in
this manner would
shift between time
periods within each
section according to
the point made.
Example
A literature review of 31 relevant articles
published between January 1999 and March
2004 identified 12 categories of neighborhood
characteristics relevant to maternal and child
health: income/wealth, employment, family
structure, population composition, housing,
mobility, education, occupation, social
resources, violence and crime, deviant behavior,
and physical conditions.
[Example adapted from Rajaratnama, J.K., Burke, J.G. & O’Campo, P. (2006). Maternal
and child health and neighborhood context: The selection and construction of area-level
