What is an operating system?
 The operating system is a special type of program which loads automatically
when you start your computer.
 The operating system allows you to use the advanced features of a modern
computer without having to learn all the details of how the hardware works.
 There are a number of different types of operating system in common use.
 The IBM PC (Personal Computer) was introduced way back in 1981 and
was originally supplied with an operating system called DOS (Disk
Operating System). This operating system was very basic, and you had to be
a bit of a computer expert just to understand how to use it. It was NOT user-
friendly.
 Microsoft introduced Windows and this is the operating system which is
most widely used on PCs today, there are a number of different types of
Windows. Most people are today running either Windows XP or Windows
Vista or Windows 7 .
 Linux, UNIX, Mac OS X
There are a number of different versions of Micros of
Windows 7 available:
1- Windows 7 Starter: Windows 7 Starter is the edition of Windows 7 that
contains the fewest features. It is only available in a 32-bit version and does
not include the Windows Aero theme, hat can only run three programs at a
time. This version is ideal for netbooks.
2- Windows 7 Home Basic: Designed for developing countries, this version
adds better graphics and Internet connection sharing to the Starter edition.
3- Windows 7 Home Premium: Suitable for the home or small business .
Contains Windows Media Centre, Windows Aero and touch-screen control
functionality.
4- Windows 7 Professional: Suitable for the home enthusiast and small
business users and allows more networking functionality.
5- Windows 7 Enterprise: This edition targets the enterprise segment of the
market and is sold through volume licensing to companies which have a
Software Assurance contract with Microsoft.
6- Windows 7 Ultimate: contains the same features as Windows 7 Enterprise,
but unlike the Enterprise edition, it is available to home users on an individual
license basis.
What is a Windows Aero:
The Aero desktop gives you full access to the new features available within
Windows 7. You can tell that you are using the Aero desktop if the title bar of
your windows are translucent, as illustrated below.
Start, restart and shutdown the system:
To start the computer you will need to:
1. Locate and press the power switch of your computer.
2. Switch the monitor on using its power switch.
 after a short period of time a windows similar to the
figure below:
• Enter your password .
• Press enter or arrow next to password field
To restart your computer:
1. Click the start button as shown below:
2. Click the arrow next to the button labeled shutdown
from the menu shown .
3. Click restart option.
To switch computer off :
1. Click the start button as shown below:
2. Click the shutdown button labeled from the menu shown .
Sometimes a program stops responding to the commands you
give from the keyboard or the mouse and becomes non-
responsive. Hence, to shut non-responding programs down you
need to the follow the steps below:
1. On the keyboard, press Alt+Ctrl+Delete combination, i.e you
have to press the three keys at the same time.
2. Click start task manger as shown below:
3- after click the window shown below will be displayed:

4- choose the non-responding program from list of programs.


5- press End Task button. A message box will appear where you
have to press End Now button.
Desktop component:
4- The Mouse pointer :

appear on the screen as a small arrow that you can move by dragging the
mouse (hardware part). The mouse pointer can be used to accomplish the
following tasks:
A. Pointing: when you position the small arrow on an icon a small flag will
appear to give you information about that icon.
B. clicking: pointing to start button and pressing the left button of the mouse.
As a result, a menu containing various option will appear.
C. Double clicking: the action of pointing at an icon using the mouse pointer
and pressing the left button of the mouse twice. After that, a new window
containing the files enclose in the original folder will appear.
D. Right click: the action of pointing the mouse at an icon and pressing on
the right mouse button which will cause a menu that contain various
options to appear.
E. dragging: the action of pointing at an icon then you press and hold the
left button of the mouse while moving it.
Display information about the computer:
You can view the basic information about your computer such as
operating system installed, the type of processor and the size of
RAM. This information can be displayed two methods:
First method:
1. Press start button.
2. Click the control panel option from the start menu. The windows
shown below:
3- click system land security icon or link. The system and security
window, shown below:
4- click system link or icon and the window shown below will be
displayed :

Second method:
1. Press Right click on computer in desktop as shown below .
2. Select properties option, after select you will show the
information about you computer.
Using Help
In order to support you while you are using Microsoft Windows, an
on-line help has been provided. There are several ways and
methods to get help.

The first method:


1. Press start button .
2. Choose the help and support option in order to get help about
Microsoft Windows. As a result, the windows help and support
center Windows displayed in shown next slide:
3. Type a word or a phrase then press search. The search result
will be displayed as shown next slide.
4. From the search result choose or click the option you want.
The second method:
1. Follow steps 1 and 2 from the first method.
2. From first figure shown in the first method, click Browse Help
topic, the window shown below.
3. Click the topic you want.
The third method:
1. At anywhere you can select help option that found in menu
bar in any folder .
2. Select view help as shown below.
Practical Exercise:
1. Switch your computer on, enter your password and
then try to restart your computer.
2. Name the type of operating system.
3. Run any software program on your desktop, and try
to stop running by using task manger.
4. Display information about your computer in two
methods.
5. Search in help in three methods about the internet
word.
