CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS

A. Introduction
Look at the pictures below. What do we observe?

Fig. 1: Patterns in Nature

Patterns are all around us!

Looking for patterns and understanding patterns gives us great
power. With patterns, we can learn to predict the future, discover
new things and understand the world around us in a better way.

B. What is the pattern?

A pattern is something that repeats or grows with some rule.

Fig. 2: Basic Geometrical Patterns

For Example: In the example mentioned above, the red circle

comes after the blue circle, so there is a pattern.
Now, let us look at one more example:
What will come next?

1
CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS

Here is the answer!

Going by the pattern, the next one should be a square.

Checkpoint-1

1. Draw the next figure in the following examples:

C. Different types of patterns:

i. Number Patterns:

A number pattern is a pattern or sequence of numbers. This

pattern establishes a relationship between all numbers.

2
CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS
Example: 1

Here, we can get the numbers in the pattern by adding 5 to the

previous number.
Given are the steps to solve number patterns:
1. To solve number patterns related questions, we first need to find
out the rule with which numbers are related.
2. To do so, first, we need to see the few numbers in the given
pattern.
3. Try to find out the difference between consecutive numbers; it
will help us understand the rule.
Example :2
11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41, 47, 53

We have several types of number patterns:

1. Increasing Number Patterns:

Fig. 3: Increasing Number Pattern

3
CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS
2. Decreasing Number Patterns:

Fig. 4: Decreasing Number Pattern

3. Growing Number Patterns:

To understand the concept of growing pattern, look at the following

example:

Checkpoint-2

Fill in the missing numbers in the following examples:

1. 1, 3, 6, 10, _______ , _________ , ____________ , _________ , ________,
2. 2, 3, 6, 11,18 _______ , _________ , ____________ , _________ , ________,
3. 2462, 2464, 2468, __________ , __________ , _____________ ,
4. 4111, 5111, 6111, __________ , __________ , _____________ ,
5. 6250, 6300, 6350, ______________ , __________ , ___________

4
CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS
ii. Patterns with Dots:
Some pattern related problems also involve dots and patterns made
with dots. In such questions, we need to find out the number and
position of the dots in the pattern.
Example -3

1. In the given pattern, what will be the next figure?

2. In the given pattern, what will be the next figure?

iii.Patterns with alphabets:

The way we have number patterns, the same way we can have a
pattern in alphabets:
Example: 4
XY, XXYY, XXXYYY, XXXXYYYY, ……………………
If we observe the given pattern, we will find that an X is being

added to the extreme left, and a Y is added to the extreme right in
every step to form the pattern.

Checkpoint-3

1. Fill in the missing numbers:

A, B, C, A, A, B, B, _______ ,_______ ,_______ , _________
2. 2. Fill in the missing numbers:
A, Z, B, Y, C , _______ , ________ , _________ , _________
3. Fill in the empty box:

A D G J M P

4. Fill in the empty box:

QR OP MN KL IJ GH

iv. Patterns involving shapes:

Such patterns occur when a group of shapes are repeated over and
over again. These patterns follow a specific sequence or order of
shapes that are repeated at least two times. The shapes can be
simple shapes like circles or squares or other objects such as arrows,
flowers, moons, and stars.

If we observe the figure above, we will find circles, triangles,

pentagons, and stars in the pattern.

6
CHAPTER 1
PATTERNS
Steps to follow while solving patterns that involve shapes:
1. Name the shapes that are there in the pattern.
2. Identify the sequence of the shapes.
3. The easiest way to do this is to start listing the shapes in the
order they appear.
4. Look for when the sequence of shapes starts to repeat.
5. Find the next figure in the given pattern :

6. Find the next shape in the pattern:

D. Bird’s-eye view

• With patterns, we can learn to predict the future, discover new

things and understand the world around us in a better way.
• A pattern is something that repeats or grows with some rule.
• A number pattern is a pattern or sequence of numbers. This
pattern establishes a relationship between all numbers.
• Some pattern related problems also involve dots and patterns
made with dots. In such questions, we need to find out the
number and position of the dots in the pattern.

• The way we have number patterns, the same way we can have
a pattern in alphabets:
• Such patterns occur when a group of shapes are repeated over
and over again. These patterns follow a specific sequence or
order of shapes that are repeated at least two times.

E. Solved examples
