PICE OLYMPICS 2024

Chess General Guidelines


ELIGIBILITY

1. Each student chapter will have four (4) players, two (2) for each category.
2. All athletes must be enrolled in their respective PICE University Student Chapter and
present a photocopy of their registration form and Identification Card compiled in a PDF
file format to be submitted to the Google form provided by the sports committee.
3. Each team may include varsity and ex-varsity players on their roster. However, the varsity
player is eligible to participate only if their main sport is different from the current
tournament sport.
4. The Team Coach must register the team members in the registration link to be provided by
the PICE ISA Committee. The deadline for registration will be in November ___, 2022.
Note: Only the team coach will register the whole team members.

TOURNAMENT RULES
1. Properly move all of the chess pieces.
2. Understand pawn promotion.
3. Understand rules for “advanced” moves: Castling and En passant Capture (note: please ask
the organizer in case of any confusion about En passant Rule)
4. Understand Check and the ways to get out of check (move, block, capture)
5. Understand Checkmate
6. Understand the “touch-move” rule. The touch-move rule specifies that a player, having the
move, who deliberately touches a piece on the board must move or capture that piece if it is
legal to do so.
7. Understand 50 moves draw rule i.e. the game can be claimed drawn after 50 moves if there
are no pawn moves or no captures.
8. Understand the 3-fold repetition rule. The game can be claimed to be drawn if the exact
same position is repeated thrice.
9. Each team's place in the order of classification shall be decided by the number of match
points it has scored.
10. No outside assistance during games.
11. In case of any confusion/disputes talk to the tournament organizers.
12. Win: 1 point, Draw: 0.5 point, Loss: 0 point
13. To determine the winners in each game, the players are required to put the kings in the
middle squares in the winner’s winning square; If drawn otherwise put the kings in their
square color.
TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE AND MECHANICS
1. For the whole tournament, the time control will be set to 20 mins for each side.
2. Each team should bring at least 2 mats/boards and a chess clock installed in their
smartphones.
3. The chess clock must be on the right hand of Black.
4. The structure of the tournament will be round-robin.
5. In case of a tie in a team score, tiebreaker/s will be applied until it is resolved:
a. WOTO (winner over the other): Firstly, it will be based on board 1, but if both have
drawn, it will be decided on board 2.
b. The Sonneborn-Berger system: the player's Sonneborn-Berger score is the sum of
the scores of their defeated opponents plus half the scores of their drawn
opponents.
c. The team with a higher added Sonneborn-Berger score is the winner.
d. A rematch will be given for the tied teams with lesser time control (10 minutes
each).
6. Board 1 will be prioritized in determining the winner.
7. The color of the pieces is determined by the round-robin tournament maker.
8. Members must only play on their designated boards.
9. There would be a 5-10-minute break after each game.
10. The game ends in a win (checkmate/resignation/loss of time) or draw (insufficient
materials/players agreement)

IRREGULARITIES AND PENALTIES


1. Major and Minor Offenses
2. Touching Pieces Unnecessarily: Touching a piece without the intention to move it, even if
not moving it, can be considered disruptive.
3. Prematurely Pressing the Clock: Pressing the clock before completing a move, such as
releasing the piece on the board, is a minor offense.
4. Not Respecting Quietness: Speaking too loudly, making unnecessary noises, or behaving in
a way that distracts others in a tournament setting can be seen as minor misconduct.
5. Prematurely Pressing the Clock: Pressing the clock before completing a move, such as
releasing the piece on the board.
6. Mobile phones and other electronic communications are strictly prohibited inside the
playing area. A player who will violate this rule shall lose his/her game.
7. A team whose member gives unsolicited advice or assistance to his teammate while the
games are in progress shall lose its match.
PENALTIES
The players can pause the clock and call the arbiter/game official to report irregularities
a. 1st Offense: Warning
b. 2nd Offense: +5 minutes to opponent
c. 3rd Offense: Forfeit
DISQUALIFICATION
1. Dishonest or fake information. This includes wrong player information and other lies in the
communication.
2. Players who show bad behavior, toxicity, and attitude problems in the game, in chats, and
public postings.
3. All players must respect the Tournament organizer and Tournament handlers’ decisions.
Failure to abide by the rules will be subject to disqualification.
